  1. I love Burger Girl.. The Dallas location on McKinn\ey is great..The Hangover burger, the Kobe beef burger and those unbelievable gorganzola cheese fries,, All very very delicious.. I will drive to Tomball for their good food.. I never noticed it being a breasturant; just nice friendly girls serving a nice meal.

  2. Looks like Sonny & Cher need to go on a diet...

LOL.. Not at all..The camera adds pounds.. Sonny weighs 23lbs and Cher is 24lbs.. Pretty average. I keep them below 25 so I don't have to change the Heartguard.. I have a friend with a Pug named Dexter that weighs 40lbs!..

  3. My Pugs are "Sonny & Cher".

They are brother and sister and I adopted them from the Albuquerque Animal shelter in 2002. They were already named...

I also have a cat named Sunny that I adopted in 1997. It gets confusing at dinner time with a Sonny and a Sunny in the house..

  4. Not Houston but close by... in Galveston.

Seahorse Motel (Thomas M. Price, 1956)

    Moody Convention Center

    SS Galveston Motel

The Seahorse and Moody convention center were bought by Fertitta and demolished. Once the lots were cleared, they were put back on the market. Some say it was because they were original Moody properties (some kind of power statement).

The SS Galveston was demolished to make way for condos that never happened.. all that remains on the property are a couple of palm trees.

I know all of these buildings were obsolete and deteriorating but I did hate to see them go.

  5. and a majority portion probably with bo upon exit. not sure i'd want to be sitting next to anyone in that state.

I work out there several times a week and have found it to be a civilized crowd; most shower before leaving... :P

  6. Looks like I'll be dealing with all 3 of my Galveston house insurance companies (wind storm, Flood, Homeowners) for a while. The other day I was worried about the chicken nuggets I left in the freezer down there... now I wonder if the freezer will even be there... I hope everyone is taking this as serious as it is.. and "hunkering down in place".. Be safe....

  7. Maybe one of you old timers - OK, other old timers can help me on this one. If I remember, the Jack Tar was at Seawall just east of Broadway. Was it gone before Carla? Or was it a victim of the storm?

The Jack Tar was at the corner of 6th and Broadway (where Broadway merges with Seawall) and was not a victim of the storm., just old age. I'm not sure when it was demolished but after it was torn down the land sat vacant for years and has been replaced by the Emerald by the Sea and Chile's.

  8. I was 9 years old and staying with my aunt on Bremond St. We were around the corner from the A & P on Crawford and McGowen. My most memorable moment of the storm was being the only time in my life that I was picked up and carried by the wind. I was walking to the store and a huge gust of wind swept me up off the ground.. I was thrilled and couldn't stop talking about it.. Later that night, the wind blew the windows out of the attic and I had to go up in the wet attic and help my aunt board up the openings. I can still hear her yelling at me to watch the electic wires ( knob & tube)..

When I got back to Galveston that weekend, I was amazed at seeing a house on 21st and Broadway that was upside down.. Very cool to a 9 year old who doesn't understand how devastating it all really was.

Most of my family stayed at the Galvez (and drank all the liquor the hotel had) and took 8mm film of the tornado cutting through the Balinese room across the Seawall. Of course no one knows what happened to "those old movies".

  9. i was already a member so i didn't need to sign up. yeah, there were a lot of people there. more employees than members. entrance to the club is on the 3rd floor of the parking garage. really convenient to have in midtown. and is 100 times better than that hole-in-the-wall gym, metamorphosize.

I was a member of the Meyerland 24hr but my trainer moved to this club so I have followed him. The building is great but I am concerened about the garage.. It looks as though it could fill up real fast (especially when the retail opens). There do not seem to be many parking options. There is a limited amount of street parking and it is metered. Hopefully when I go at 4:30pm it won't be too busy.

  10. Am I the only one that remembers the blue awnings on the Foleys arches, and the aztez calendar logo on the mall doors and canvas coverings?

The awnings were metal and removed years ago when they became unsafe. The bolts and brackets had rusted beyond repair and they were barely holding on. They were also removed from the Foley's at Norwest Mall.

I remember the door handles but I do not know why they were removed. The bronze door handles at the Macy's at El Con Mall in Tucson have a beautiful Aztec design with the Levy's logo; what I find funny is that hardly anyone even knows that Levy's ever existed. Since the 80's, the same store has remained open but went from Levy's to Sanger-Harris to Foley's to Macy's.. Gone are the days of personalized door handles..lol

  11. I'm still debating whether or not I should pay all the fees and sign up...

I live in Westbury. I belong to the worn out Meyerland 24hr Sport and am transferring to the Elgin/Louisiana gym.. If you're serious about working out and want state of the art equipment, I'd join. I will be driving way out of the way but it's worth it for new equipment.. The cost is about the same everywhere so you might as well go for the best equipment, and of course, cleanliness, and air condintioning that works. They will keep this gym in good condition for at least a couple years.

  12. Man has it changed today. My mom still lives in Willow Meadows so I drive by Westbury every so often. Good memories but sad to see what it has turned into.

and it is still changing... I just drove past the Home Depot and there is a huge sign announcing the new 149' cel tower they want to put on the space between Home Depot and what is left of Westbury Square.. We all struggle with ideas to improve the area and this happens... Couldn't anyone think of anything uglier to put in the neighboorhood?

  13. Anybody remember Burgers by Gourmet? I remember it from when I was young. I think it was located somewhere around St. Thomas. I remember the inside had a counter and might have had some kind of newsprint wallpaper. The burgers were wrapped in brown or orange paper, I think. Just a random musing. Can anyone confirm its location or supply a photo?

The one I used to go to was on the corner of Yoakum and W. Alabama (Southwest corner). I remember the decor as having a lot of yellow but those were the drug days of the early 70's so it might have been newsprint.

  14. I know people that grew up there that couldn't wait to leave, there are the BOIs that wouldn't want to live anywhere else, and people like me that spend as much time there as possible. The city has a great history, and if the politicians can get it together a bright future.

I was born in the Island, was one of those "couldn't wait to leave" boi's and left when I was 18. In my youth I didn't realize what a special place it is. I finally went back 34 years later and bought a house intending for Galveston to be home again. Although not realistic for me to live there, I spend at least 2 weekends a month at my Island house.

I have many great memories of Galveston..Stewart Beach amusement park, the roller coaster on 23rd and Seawall, the tamale man with his cart on 25th and Broadway, Shep's Little Chicken Shack on 23rd and M, all of our Italian and Slavic neighbors, the Pleasure Pier, the Pier Drive in, Triple X Root Beer, Surf Drive-in, G & G Bakery, Easter egg hunting in our yard at 13th and Church, the smell of my Grandfather's grocery store on 11th and Postoffice.. I could go on and on but all of those memories are just that... fond memories..none of that exists anymore. The "new" Galveston has the Strand district, Mardi Gras, Lone Star Ralley, Di Bellas, Tremont Hotel, Moody Gardens, Grand Opera House, the wonderful Historic Foundation, the Homes tour and Dickens on the Strand. None of these existed when I grew up there and they are very nice to have around..

Sadly, politics, economics, and neglect have taken their toll on what could be a progressive Gulf Coast destination. I won't give up on Galveston and hope others will continue to visit and help support the economy.

  15. I always said he is probably a really normal person (when camera is turned off).

I see him at my gym all the time and you're correct... he's just a normal guy.. brings his little boy to the gym's childcare, no fanfare, always polite, I didn't even realize who he was untill someone pointed him out...

  16. pic_full_walabama_court_1_.JPG

I loved my younger years (in the early 1970's) at the 1920 W. Alabama Apartments.. The were so ultra-modern.. I'm not sure of the condition now but the architecture is still wonderful. The living room wall was all glass onto the front patio.. the back patio was totally enclosed and accessible from the master bedroom..And the vintage Lightolier round globe light fixtures were everywhere. Even back then I appreciated the attention to detail. I was so bummed when the rent went up to $185...lol. If it is in poor condition, it would be a fantastic candidate for restoration....

  17. I miss Foleys. I tried to be open minded and gave Macys a chance but now I go to Penneys or Dillards. I am one of the many that dont give a crap about Macys.

    Amen..

I sure do feel sorry for all of the employees and hope they can find other jobs.

A far as shopping, I'd rather be more creative and shop the small local retailers and/or Pennys (keep the money in Texas and not to Terry Lundgren and his vice-henchmen).
