  1. I was in the area last night watching the All-Star game with a friend. It was an experience getting to his car in the dark without falling down. All in all I liked many of the houses that I saw.

and the real problem is more than just what meets the eye. We see and get irritated by the appearance but keep in mind that past owners in this nabe started renting and these passing gypsies couldnt give a crap about the sidewalks. It's make a quick buck and move on. That has been the cycle for over 35 years. To them its like getting a motel room, wreck it (since its not yours) then leave in the morning. This area will not improve until owners stop renting for cheap rates, just like a cheap motel you get what you offer. It would be wonderful to have a survey done to see how many houses on each block are being bought by the tenants living in them. Whole new topic, but thats mostly why the sidewalks were left to go to pot over the years, no one complains, no one will fix. Thats it.

PS, that big old red brick house on corner of Munger/Broadmoor is the best/worse example. When the elderly lady passed away it was rented over & over & over ever since. This was around 1974. :o Thats why its such an eyesore and total wreck. Crater Houston list please.

  2. In fact, this whole section of Almeda and Holcombe/Binz is it? is taking on a whole new look!

I have a real good feeling that (these areas are that are now seeing a ressurgance or new interest) were once intended to be just that, back in the day.

If you start at Mosaic and drive north into DT you can see a whole new appearance. Its kind of like a 60 year gap that happened. Make any sense? We have that topic about The Spanish Village restuarant opening in 1953 so that kind of sets the date right. Area was quite the place to be and as time went on area went into not being so interesting. Here we are today with a fantastic comeback!

Mi piace davvero - I really like it! :D

  3. This reminds me of a home, a few houses from where we grew up on the near East End that was rented out after our childhood friends moved away. This house was rented to a couple with a child. One day there were cops and lots of hoopla. Seems he killed her with an ax in the hallway entering the dining room. After all the media died down the owners finally rented out. These crazy hippies we knew, rented it and said the blood was still visible on the door and bottom of wall. They thought it was sort of far out and left as is. The home is still there and I can assure that even present owners are not aware of its gory past. No telling how many hundreds of residences have been the scenes of similar horror stories.

  4. Here ya go!

My big brother and I remember him quite well. It all seemed so real and the black and white made no difference to us. He was part of the kid line up after him Batman, The Green Hornet, etc. Good ol days.

(See Batman's phone number topic under Historic Houston). There were some updates on Kitirick and Cadet Don in the Chron a few years ago. Pleasant, wholesome memories. :P

  5. Just a note of caution on fast, apt development.

That very same idea occured and went into action in SW Houston in early to mid 70's. Does the name Gulfton area sound familiar?

Cross fingers these new ones stay very expensive and that there isnt another oil boom crisis. :o:D

  6. I can't imagine living in that place...reminds me of the Amityville horror house - not physically, but talk about a terrible history

Exactly. If you read the true story, at least one bedrooms was the "torture" room. Only thing missing was a guillotine.

In fact, I personally would not want to live on the same street. Feel nautious...turning blue...

  7. This is where I'm from, Ingrando Park.

Sure, move in there, just don't leave the townhome community. And don't walk around at night. And don't wear too much red.

A shooting last Wednesday has left residents in a Houston community more fearful.

    KHOU - TV

Makeshift memorial sits where man was shot and killed at Ingrando Park in Houston's East End.

People who live near Ingrando Park in Houston's East End say crime is tearing their neighborhood apart.

Tuesday, a makeshift memorial sits at the sit of a deadly shooting last week.

It happened in the middle of the day and several schools in the East End area were placed on lockdown.

    Also online Shooting report

Deady Middle School was one of those schools near the park.

According to police, shots were fired around 11 in the morning.

Fourty-year-old Raymond Hernandez was reportedly sitting on a bench near the basketball courts at Ingrando Park when he was struck in the head.

He later died in the hospital.

Investigators said witnesses saw a small beige or tan car driving by before the shooting.

They reportedly told police the passenger in the car stuck his hand out of the window and fired the shots that hit Hernandez.

Nearby resident said Ingrando Park has a history of gang activity and drug dealing.

They say gunfire is not unusual in this neighborhood so they're coming together to talk about solutions.

"Part of our goal here is to empower. Not to close the door, but to open up to work together to take action on behalf of the community," said Will Reed, Pastor at Mission Milby United Methodist Church.

The town meeting will be held at Pastor Reed's Church at 4 p.m. Tuesday.

It's located at at 2220 Broadway.

Organizers hope everyone from the East End neighborhood will attend.

The church is just blocks from where Hernandez was fatally shot.

Police still don't know what prompted the shooting nor do they have any suspects.

  8. Hey Guys, I was wondering what your thoughts were on the Woodridge Square Townhomes. They look like nice places but I don't know much about the build quality or the area. I was also told that they are governmental housing. Is this true?

They seem fairly new, maybe been there for about 5 years now? I personally have no info about them but it all depends on the interested party. This would be a great location for a student attending very nearby HCC campus on Rustic for example. This intersection gets very crammed on weekends and around rush hour. I will not comment about the immediate nabe as soom will get offended but take a drive around and use common instinct. This is not where I would raise a family. Schools are low ranking so that tells it. There is a train crossing nearby (north) which nomally cuts people off from other destinations. Bottom line is be very open-minded and open to big time diversity. Govt housing is not normally a real perk in the eyes/ears of some. Hope they never lower the rates as that normally brings in well.... :)

    Wow!

Picked up a pizza at the new Pizza Hut about a block from the old one on Calhoun and the whole landscape has changed. What an improvement!

Most of the old parking lots are going away for good and there are several buildings and or garages going up. Got to see to believe. :)

  11. Sounds like just another power networking business mixer. The city has many, many of those on a weekly basis. Most free.

On a side note, we know of a fairly recent Gala that was held there and it was not nearly as elegant as promoted. That was from several sources not one. I think this is a notice about the event not the place though. Enjoy!

Oh, and for any professional business mixer, I would strongly suggest a business suit especially in the mueum district. :) and that is if you are the social type. Some peope aren't.

  12. Dean Corll locations: :(

Boat shed - Silver Bell & Player; shed #11

Heights candyshop - West 22nd street; just north of Helms elementary

Pasadena house - 2020 Lamar street, Pasadena

You mean that boat shed is still standing? Not torn down yet? Ugh

and was Heights candyshop really a candyshop or was it just a nickname? what was that? one of the places he picked up these teens at? Story was never that clear at the time.

Still somewhat shocked that anyone in thier right mind would actually inhabit that Pasadena house? Like living in the Texas Chainsaw Massacre home.

  13. Is this a black woman about 5 foot or so?

she hit me up for a dollar on metro. I figured she got her money stolen or something because she was well dressed and seemed to be well groomed. Forgot all about it. An hour later, I saw her asking people as I was walking up and she asked ME for money again. I finally asked her to forget it. She already had my dollar and she started cursing me out (after initially praising god or whatever her schtick was initially). I threw a few choice words and threatened to dunk her in the fountain on mainstreet if she didn't leave me alone.

    Looking back,I should have.

No, this one looked just like Laverne DeFazio of Laverne & Shirley fame. Maybe she got fired from her job at the beer bottling plant? Had a Brooklyn dialect too! I should have done like Squiggy, and popped her one! Hey Shuyall!

  14. Hey there! Thanks for remembering my original thread. Yes, I've seen the activity and I'm absolutely thrilled. I'd love to know if the owners are doing the renovation or if it's being handled by some kind of historical preservation society. Either way, I cannot believe it's finally happening. I would pay those people to walk through that house. It's like a moment stood still in Houston 1905 and is forever captured. Look at those original horse ties at the front on the street.

I think I saw one of the owners speaking with a painter on the sidewalk but I didn't have the nerve to ask if I could see the house. I'm sure they'd say 'no' from what I've heard. And my husband's convinced that someone would chase me around with a chainsaw if I got in..........

Actually, I'd almost be willing to take that chance! Anyone got any inside scoop on the Westmoreland renovation?????

We just worship that home! Houston history if ever there was!

Everything about it just is cool even the yards. Once completed it would be perfect for a movie location. Imagine a turn of the century ball of Houston aristocracy milling about, etc. This whole block and neighboring homes are fantastico! Belle fortuna! :D

  15. Whew! At first I thought you meant timpano, and I was making a mental note to practice my shrieking and go the Charismatic Center this weekend to chow down on some giant, delicious, super-stuffed Italian pie.

Now that reminds me of Primal Therapy! Anyone remember that?

I think it was like screaming as loud as you can in group therapy to release the years of mental anguish/trauma? National Lampoon did a great parody on it once.

  16. i have no problem with one nice cross or maybe a statue of Christ like many of the great cities of the world have. My peoblem is that many of the mega churchs have coffee houses and popcorn and theatre seating. As mentioned by an earler post there is a lack of social programs at many of these hugh churchs. Having saqid that I know several people who attend the mega churchs who do good works on theit own. Houston as mo9re help for the homeless, near homless, unemployed and underempoyed then many other cities.. As a Catholic I can point out to Magnificat House, Isiah House, Catholic Charities, Matha's Kitchen, Fishes and Loaves, and several fod banks. The Episcapalians have brakfast at Palmer Memoria, and Lord Of the Streets offer help.

I hear ya. I tested the Charismatic Center at Cullen once and that was the straw that broke the camel's back. When the rock band on stage started up, that's when I said "time to get out of here". Maybe we should have waited till they started passing the joint around? Do you feel like I do? (Peter Fampton jamming in the background).

  17. Just drive down Westheimer all the way to Highway 6. Keep in the left hand lane and keep your window down. You'll have to beat them off with a stick. Stop at any large shopping center along the way and sooner or later you'll be approached. I think I've seen way more in the near suburbs than I have in downtown.

Westchase has them coming and going. Set up cardboard shacks in alleys and in open shopping strips Westheimer/Wilcrest. Makes us wonder how they got this far out? or what is the allure? There was an effort to push them out of DT by HPD and it worked at least in the interum. So now they are here and are not friendly. Local security and HPD tell em to move on so back and forth they go.

There was that one 40 something woman that always hung around Main street near Macy's and always would say "Give me money" she had on coordinating clothes, lip stick and nail polish. At least she dressed for the DT crowd. She never seemed to realize she was asking the same person for cash everyday, morning & lunch time. Wouldn't you at least have more sense not hit up the same person for $. The charade is over baby.

I cracked up when this guy on the bus told me he finally got tired of her same routine, told her to get lost, and she attacked him, gave him a black eye. :P Others had to pull her off until a cop intervened. Yep, harmless shuhhh. That is one thing I do not miss about working DT.

Looking up in downtown Houston is probably best done before lunch than after. Especially on cloudy days when you're standing close to one of the city's many reflective buildings.

Thanks to FMulder21 for the picture!

Reminds me when we were kids walking downtown and gazing up while trying to walk straight. Nearly impossible. You get dizzy and start staggering (blended in with the winos) :D

Like the song...So dizzy my head is spinning, like a whirpool it never ends.
