  1. I think a lot of people have hit on what I would consider an "ideal" transit system for Houston; dedicated BRT/busways (I always have been a fan of the trolleybus), inner-city light rail tied into a commuter rail system that hit some of the outer suburbs/economic areas (i.e. Katy, The Woodlands, etc) along with HOV lanes, etc. I would also like to throw in dedicated (and seperated bike lanes) not only from a safety standpoint, but from an business economic stimulator. Along with streetcars in dedicated areas that tie into the larger system light rail/commuter rail/bus system (East End, Washington/Montrose areas); this as a "people accelerator" or "last mile" solution/business economic stimulator. Also would be ideal to have car sharing programs around major economic/employment/residential areas.

  2. Cool site.  But note that it is not Hobby's site.  It is actually Southwest Airlines.  While our airport administration and websites have improved drastically over the years, sadly, they still don't have the ability to have that good or current of a website.  (See, for example, HAS's "latest construction update" dated March 2013.  (And it is consistently 2+ months behind.)

    Thanks, I updated the post.

  3. Hobby Airport Southwest Airlines has a new website dedicated to the international terminal being constructed, along with construction progess and contruction related travel notifications, etc. Has a neat historical timeline along with photos as well:

  4. I'll play devil's advocate and ask how much worse would the traffic be without any options besides bus? And, are you admitting that freeway expansion doesn't stop rush hour traffic as well?

What I am saying is that transit options shouldn't be looked at from a single viewpoint, i.e. "traffic reduction". (See induced demand to answer both of your questions).

  5. I haven't noticed a difference, they are both horrible. I heard on NPR a while back the the US has the worst vehicle accident rate, versus other developed, albeit it "Western" countries, with Texas leading the charge in vehicle accidents within the US. And I believe Houston just made the top 10 recently as far as pedestrian deaths/accidents. (I was almost a statistic last Thursday...thanks white Tahoe).

  6. The problem for oil producers now is that we could get into a situation where there is so much production that we have a huge price drop. Saudi Arabia reassured the markets just yesterday that they are not going to bring their spare capacity on line.

And that's exactly what happened to NG prices. We have such an oversupply at the moment that prices have dropped dramatically. As a side benefit of this, CO2 emissions in the US have dropped to a 20 year low, as it’s cheaper for power companies to use gas, versus other, more expensive sources, such as coal.

  7. The person who wrote those tweets was a HAS media agent and is responsible for the social media with the airport, and yes they are in the know. That is why they tweeted what they did. I even asked whether they will expand north, HAS responded yes. I think UA used this entire HOU situation as a cover to make needed cuts.

Until there is an official announcement from HAS/United, I am not going to put any stock into a 'tweet'...
