  1. So Houston is better than Dallas in such highbrow categories as Dance, Classical, Literature and Art. Yet Dallas is the one full of uppity, pretentious snobs.
  2. Only if you don't have cable or satellite.
  3. The GEMCO by Northline Mall became a Fiesta, not sure if it's still there.
  4. As far as I know, the one at Greenspoint Mall is still vacant.

  6. In the 1940s, there was an airport on the site of what is now Aldine High and Stovall Middle School.
  7. Macy's "bought out" several regional department store chains such as Foley's, Robinson's/May, Hecht's, etc. and rebranded them all as Macy's. Dillard's is a separate company.
  8. This'll make us all feel old; Moby's a grandpa. Yeah Baby!
  9. The building where Gallery Furniture is now was built about 10 years ago. The original Gallery Furniture was right on the feeder road in former model homes.
  10. I work for an independent yellow pages publisher, and the thinking is that printed phonebooks will be a thing of the past in 20 years.
  11. You can still get an "Icee" at Wal-Mart and some movie theatres. I remember the local Stop-N-Go selling them as a kid.
  12. Styx opened for KISS at the famous 9/2/77 show. Also opening for KISS at the Summit: 8/13/76 - Bob Seger 10/21/79 - Breathless (?) 2/24/88 - Ted Nugent 8/21/90 - Winger/Slaughter 7/6/96 - Pushmonkey
  13. According to the book Careless Love: The Unmaking of Elvis Presley, Elvis was completely wasted at that show. So much so that Col. Parker reportedly used his "influence" with HPD to keep the cops working security that day from going public, and that Elvis was flown back to Memphis right after the show for "treatment".
  14. Harold also did numerous local commercials, including Pilgrim cleaners, that's probably where you saw him in a suit.
  15. Not sure, but there was a Levitz store with a big sign on the Katy Freeway near what is now the Beltway.
  16. I graduated high school at the Summit, and saw many concerts and wrestling shows there. The complete KISS show from The Summit, 9/2/77, is on the DVD box set "KISSology". Most of the concerts there were taped professionally, so there are lots clips on YouTube.
  17. Eckerds was open on Sunday, but several sections were roped off, stuff you couldn't buy on Sunday. Certain Walgreens and CVS's are open 24/7, but most are open 8am-midnight.
  18. If you can find a copy of the book "A Six-Gun Salute", there are a lot of photos of Colt Stadium, including a few after the stadium was closed.
  19. There was a small ampitheatre there for a while; kind of a mini-Woodlands, except with reserved seating in the back and the lawn/moshpit up front.
  20. Channel 39 had Rangers games well into the 80s, usually either a late west coast game, or on weekends. Gaylord Broadcasting owned Ch. 39, and the Rangers, and Channel 11 in DFW who originated the game broadcasts (occasionally someone at channel 39 would fall asleep at the controls and let a station ID for KTVT slip through).
  21. I remember the one on 45, never stopped there though. Is the Corral Cafe in Madisonville still around?
  22. Maybe it was now-defunct Service Merchandise? I know the Best Products by Greenspoint became a Fingers' furniture center, not sure what it is now. Interesting how the article referred to the "catalog industry", a niche that was quickly rendered obsolete by "big box" stores and the internet.
  23. At any rate, the old Kroger center (now a 99
  24. There was a Furr's on I-45 between West Rd. and Aldine Bender for years, it finally closed a few years ago (it was the last major tenant in a mostly vacant strip center).
