  1. Here is a great wandering drive that is full of places to visit, and if you are a historical marker nut like my family is, this is right up your alley. Yake 290 out of Houston to Brenham (home of Blue Bell Ice cream) after you pass through Brehnam you will come to Burton, just past Burton you will come up on the 237 Round Top exit, stay in your left lane because it exits left. Take the lovely drive down through Round Top. Lots of sights to see, nice places to eat, bed and breakfast houses everywhere, what ever. 237 turns into 159 between Odenburg and Rutersville, continue on down to La Grange. Lots to do around there, Historical Markers every ten feet. Out of La Grange take 77 south, where if you have kids and they've never been to the mountains, you get a 1.5 mile winding climb up the southern Colorado Uplift (Fault). Take 77 south and you get to see Shulenburg and continue on to Halletsville. From there take 90-Alt. west towards Shiner, (love this area). Lots of antique and junk shops, great sausage houses, etc. Lovely drive through Shiner, (the brewery tour is cool too), on out to Seguin. From Seguin take 46 up to New Braunfels, you can't miss visting Gruene, Texas while you're there, Home of Gruene Hall (oldest dance hall in Texas) and lot's of cool stores and eatery's. the trails go every which way from there, any direction is good.
  2. Lankford Grocery & Market in the 4th Ward off of Dennis Street. Best Burger in Houston, IMHO. Before you die you have to go up to Dallas and eat a real hamberger at Keller's Drive-in. This is a hands down real live burger joint. Now days every fast-food joint has a drive-through window. But Keller's still likes to keep things old-fashioned. Park your car, click on your blinkers and wait for a friendly carhop. Place your order, roll up your window a tad and wait for that tray to arrive. Five bucks and change gets you a double-meat cheeseburger, Tater Tots with melted cheese and a drink (and you'll tip the server if ya got any class). The burgers are first-rate and I mean first-rate, but the real charm here is obvious: You get to sit in your car and chow down without worrying about a mishap on the open road. The serve ice cold cold beer, and even have frosted mugs. We go up to Dallas, hit Keller's then on the way back hit the Galaxy drive-in in Ennis and checkout a movie. Keller's has street rod night's and that's when I really get to play. I take my '59 vette or 67 rs/ss up for that, life doesn't get any better than that. Back before there was a Sonic, there was Keller's. I use to hang out in Dallas when I was younger, and Keller was there in the 60's. I think they opened in '54 or '55. Keller's and the "Pig Stand" was the place to be on a Friday night cruise. I think Pig Stand was around in the 1920's. The Drive-In I think was the first in the nation or so they use to boast, There use to be a Pig Stand down on Washington Ave in Houston, but it was a sit down joint. I think it's still there, I know they have a couple still in the Alamo City. But you really have to hit Keller's, hands down best burger ever. This is a fun place to go, eat and watch the "car show". If you like classic hot rods and good burgers try Kellers. You can't beat what you get for the price. A burger, fries or tots and drink for way under 6.00. They have a good variety on the menu. Good service, even when they are really busy. You can also have a beer with your burger. Saturday nights best time to go and catch the action. They have been in business for over 50 years! Check it out! KELLER'S DRIVE IN 6537 E. 7. This site says the largest US city in area is Juneau, Alaska, which covers 3,108 square miles. Geo trivia Juneau City (pop., 2000: 30,711), capital of Alaska, U.S. Located in southeastern Alaska, it was settled in 1880 when Joe Juneau and Richard Harris discovered gold nearby. Mining was important until the Alaska-Juneau gold mine closed in 1944. Juneau was made the state capital in 1959. Fishing, forestry, and government activities are important, as is tourism. In 1970 Juneau merged with Douglas, on an island across the channel, to form the largest U.S. city in area (3,108 sq mi [8,050 sq km]). And here too Geography and climate Juneau is located at 58
  8. 1850 FEDERAL CENSUS INDEX TO ONLINE IMAGES, NEWTON COUNTY, TEXAS; N-Z The numbers in this index are the sheet numbers of the 1850 Federal Census of Newton County, Texas (for example, index page 0762a is sheet number 0762a). The handwritten census pages themselves can be found on-line in the USGenWeb Archives at http://www.rootsweb.com/~usgenweb/tx/newton/census/1850 Note: All abbreviations were made by the original census taker, not by the transcriber. When the transcriber was in doubt of the handwriting, a "?" was put in place. Many of the names that appear in this index appear to be phonically spelled by the census taker and typed exactly as written by the transcriber. 10. The Hill family from all I can dig up was and is very big up around Brenham. They were huge into "Land Speculation". This W. L. Hill was with the Houston and Texas Central Railroad, and I am betting that was how he managed to get his hands on it, since the majority of the Aldine area was originally alotted for railroad right of way. This is speculation on my part however. Times were tough in the 1920's and a lot of people were forced to sell their land rights to survive. William C. J. Hill, his father served in the Republic of Texas Army, and later was the Secretary of Railroad under President Houston. During this time they aquired huge land holdings across the state. (Imagine that). And if you look at the locations, Round Top, Sommerville, Brehnam, Millican, Rutersville, and LaGrange. All of these were very prominent RR stops during the RR's hey day. Strange enough, but true.
  11. Here is a more complete list of the men involved in the Battle of San Jacinto, both Republic of Texas regulars and Volunteers to the Republic. Each of these men would have received a Land Grant for their participation in the Battle. If you scan the list you will see names that coinside with large land holders at the turn of the century in Harris and surrounding counties. And names that ended up being counties in Texas. 12. Army Rolls for the Republic of Texas Men that served in the Texas Army Source: Texas State Archives Online Index, Subseries: "Texas Revolution Military Rolls, 1835-1836" and "United States Volunteers Military Rolls, 1835-1837, 1842" MUSTER ROLLS #1 1850, Texas General Land Office, Archives and Records Division, Austin, Texas "This subseries consists of 7 rolls, representing the companies of 8 captains at the siege of Bexar of 1835, plus Colonel Fannin's division, plus the men at San Jacinto under General Houston, 1836. These lists were compiled sometime after the fact. Unfortunately, there are a lot of ommisions in this listing as the original rolls were destroyed in the Oct 10, 1855 fire which swept through the Adjutant General's office. The General Land Office did, however, have copies of most of the original rolls; a positive photostat of the General Land Office Muster Rolls [A3] is available in the Texas State Archives, and each soldier on the G.L.O. Rolls [A3] has been included in the Biographical Index in the search room." [A1] Hitchcock, S. Henry, Harry, John H., Dimitt, Philip, Fannin, J.W., Jr. (Col), Ward, Wm. (Lt Col), Travis, Wm. B. 15. Wrong on Iran, absolutely correct on the pacific coast and Florida points. Shah Bahar has a refinery with around 250,000 bpd capacity, Qeshm Island has a refinery that currently has around 150,000 bpd production capacity and is currently being upgraded to handle over 200,000 bpd. Abadan Refinery in Iran handles 500,000 bpd. Iran and Venezuela will jointly build an oil refinery in the Venezuelan region of Faja. Hugo Chavez is trying to set a mark with OPEC. The list goes on and on. Currently there are 16 refineries on line in Iran that produce 2.2 billion liters of gasoline a day. There are 12 more plants on the drawing board to be online by early 2008. Iran exports 2 mm litres of refined oil as well as 40 to 45 mm litres of fuel oil on a daily basis. Perhaps where the confusion comes in is that perhaps you are looking at the enormous crude exports that come out of Iran. Iran oil production is far beyond the available plant capacity that thay have in country, now that's a fact. Iran pumps more crude daily than ANY country's plant configuration can handle. Just wanted to clear up the mistake on Iran

  19. It appears the the surname "Aldine" is Venetian/Italian decent. There is documentation referring to the Aldine family is the most well known of the Venetian printers dating back to 1494. Aldine, was the most celebrated printers in Italy. Who is not familiar with the anchor and dolphin of the Aldine family? The Aldine press had various marks during the century of its existence, from 1494 to 1598, but they were all variations of the anchor and dolphin, the anchor representing stability and the dolphin, grace in execution. No Italian printers ever approached the Aldines in beauty of typography. Now thats right after Columbus sailed if I remember right. perhaps there was a share cropper of Italian decent with the last name of Aldine. All reference to the RR naming it after a "local farm family"they mat never had any property deeded to them. And census prior to 1900 may not be reliable.
  20. ALDINE, TEXAS (Harris County). Aldine is on Farm Road 525, the Missouri Pacific Railroad, and the Hardy Toll Road, on the northern outskirts of Houston in central Harris County. It was originally built on the International

  22. The Exciting Discovery of Mount Houston I got a kick out of this Link to Webpage MOUNT HOUSTON, TEXAS. Mount Houston is east of U.S. Highway 59 near the Dyersdale oilfield in north central Harris County. It was founded on the Houston, East and West Texas Railway ten miles from Houston. A post office operated there from 1910 until 1918. In 1914 Mount Houston had two churches, a sawmill, a lumber company, numerous market gardeners, and a population of 100. By the 1980s three churches and three schools were within a mile of the townsite, but the community had not significantly increased in size. Diana J. Kleiner
