  1. And I wish I was able to crawl under a rock somewhere. Some better - took tamiflu the first day. The first day, had 103.7 degree temperature. All I am craving is chinese food. Husband had flu first, son 14 second, son 13 third, now me. Problem is, no one is recovered enough to take care of me, but I took care of ALL of them.

Pity party - but no one wants to come because I am contagious.

    I want steamed chicken dumplings.

Is that too much to ask?

    WAH!

  2. It was O'Neil Gregory, Jr's daughter. Page 150 of the guide. I'll see what I can do.

    Jason

What about on Laurel Drive? There was a house that I knew quite well, on the corner (don't ask me which street was on the other corner) that had a glass room on the inside. That had to be an architectural marvel, but by whom?

  3. Does anyone remember The Happy Buddha on lower Westheimer? They did the chop everything up at the table thing like Benihana. There was a courtyard that had a fake thunderstorm (complete with water, thunder, and lightning) about every thirty minutes? The place burned numerous times in the early to mid 80's. When I was little, I wanted to have my 16th birthday party there. It wasn't really a place for kids, though.

Also, does anyone remember how many Hamburgers by Gourmet there were in Houston? They were amazing. The #10 and some onion rings really hit the spot. I think they had locations in Austin, too. The last one was on Alabama next to The University of St Thomas. They tore it down to build a chapel. I'd rather still have HBG.

I LOVED hamburgers by gourmet!!!!!!! I don't know how many there were, but there was one in Greenway Plaza, and one on Richmond. Not too long ago, there was one on Park Place, it lasted about 5 minutes!

  4. Not really. They are pretty lame and I avoid them if possible. There are some nice stretches like under CenterPoint and Reliant.

My pet peave is having five office co-workers walk side by side trying to talk and blocking the passage.

We need tunnel monitors to start handing out citations to these fools.

I worked downtown off and on, the last time was for 4 years, 2000-2004. We lived in the tunnels. You get used to it, and the best places to eat - the best prices overall - are or were in the tunnel.

I hate when a ton of people walk side by side in the tunnel.

I also hate it when you are almost running in the tunnel, trying to keep up, and someone passes you anyway!

  5. You should be real proud as they used to reach all children from all ethnicities and backgrounds. All six of us kids would gather in a semi-circle just to watch the show! We would imitate the dancing in our living room floor! A time not to be seen again I'm afraid.

Your grandfather was a very special man. He was very kind and caring. I was on his show more times than I can count from 1957 until at least 1967 if not later than that. I went to Beaumont to be on his show as well.

I will be 51 on Thursday, and I have SO many good memories of him!!!!

  6. Does anyone remeber the old bridge that was actually on the Glenbrook Golf course. If you drive down the Gulf Freeway feeder north from Howard you will pass over Sims Bayou. Right after you cross it if you turn right you will be on a street that parralels the bayou for a ways and then turns north and eventually comes out on Park Place between St Christophers and Charlton Park. At one time about a 1/4 of a mile down that road from the freeway there was a bridge over the bayou. Eventually they closed it to street traffic but it was used for the course for many more years. As a child my wife used to go that way to church with her Mother at St. Christophers.

That street is River Drive, the street I grew up on. The bridge became a bridge for foot traffic only when I was 10 or so, but before that, we could drive on it to get to the Glenbrook Pool. There is another bridge over Sims Bayou to the golf course - for foot traffic and golf carts - but it is back on the bayou side.

  7. I remember them. There was a street that cut over from Park Place over the bayou and over to Hwy3 that had some big homes with huge yards. The bridge was washed out several years ago so you can't cut over anymore, but most of the homes are gone now anyway.

    joe

I remember that. There's also some on streets behind Park Place.

  8. My mother in law lives right behind the Glenbrook pool and I remember those houses. I think some of them are still there. The only way to get to them is from Highway 3. One of the houses over there actually had a dock on the bayou and kept and old cabin cruiser type boat there. I always thought that was pretty neat that you could live in Houston and still have a dock with a boat. It was a long haul to the ship channel and anywhere else but I still thought it was pretty cool.

Also along those lines there is a piece of property at the end of Neal street behind the pool that a doctor has purchased and is building a huge house on. As neal bends and becomes another street there is a driveway that serves the house on Neal but continues up a little hill and goes back near the bayou. My wife and mother in law walked up there one day and looked around. It's a huge house with a concrete domed entry way and looks like it will be 5,000 sq ft plus house. Years ago a man by the name of mr. Boyd owned the house on Neal, and the house that used to sit on the hill. The house on the hill burned years ago and Mr Boyd and his wife moved to the house actually on Neal. After his death the property was pieced out and sold. Now someone is actually building a mansion where the old house stood.

Was that the same Mr. Boyd who owned a Texaco station on Park Place? Probably not, but just wondering.

  9. On Park Place Blvd., where the apartments are now, on the right side going towards Highway 3 (Old Galveston) were some real, honest to goodness mansions. My Mom and I had permission to go into one before it was torn down. It had a "Gone With the Wind" staircase, a ballroom, a HUGE swimming pool in the back, and a hugh yard. It was, at one time, palatial. Just wonder why someone didn't try to save these beautiful homes!!!

Does anyone have any pictures of them?

    Nobody else remembers them?

  11. Man, this was really start to bug me, so I googled the newsgroups and found a 1999 entry in houston.eats where someone refers to the Shamrock 6. So at least one other human being remembers it the way I do.

Quoting the post, "and lets not forget the old department store at beechnut/610 called Sage and they used to put that colored tape on your merchandise. and theres Globe where the fiesta at bellaire/hillcroft is now. and last but certaily not least these trio of theatres Shamrock 6, The old south main drive in and the mclendon triple."

    It's post #50

  12. We already know that Six Flags is not a company to be taken seriously. I thought something was fishy when they started pursuing Fiesta Texas. They were trying to become a monopoly. Probably would have pursued Disney if they had the cash.

In the process, we lose our two biggest theme parks. Houston would be a GREAT investment for a theme park/thrill ride company. Only thing I know is that Astroworld and Splashtown weren't in trouble because people weren't into theme parks. It was because Six Flags is currently lousy.

We should check out FIFA. They're building three theme parks around the world, including one in Miami. We should also check out Busch Gardens, because there isn't a Texas location, and it could easily compete with San Antonio's theme parks.

Lastly, I would LOVE to see Universal or Paramount build a theme park here. They should all be pursued by HCHSA, so taxes from the theme park's revenue could be used to pay off the stadiums and the Dome debts.

There WAS a Busch gardens here before. Don't think they would come back!

  13. Yes of course, we must remain faithful to Whataburger, as it does serve us well. But greasy? Not Whataburger. It's better than that.

By the way, White Castle blows Krystal away. Sorry.

Wow - if WHITE CASTLE is better than Krystal - then, nope. Not going.

Lived in St. Louis. Had White Castle. HATED White Castle.

Ex-husband loved them so much, he celebrated his birthdays there.

That's right - at WHITE CASTLE!

  14. Hey, guess what, Midtown....Dante's is BACK! I noticed last weekend..."Dante's" is back on the sign out front, complete with the FLAMES!

I've never eaten there, so maybe now's my chance! Was it worth it back in the day?

Well....it's not really back. It is a bar now, or so the signs say, with a grill inside - burgers, chicken sandwiches, etc. It has opened, closed, opened, closed, changed names, closed, opened, renamed Dantes, closed, opened, closed...you get my drift. My Mom lives by it, we pass it everytime we go to her house - at least once a week.

Kips Big Boy was on the NW corner of South Park now MLK and Griggs. Across the street on the SW corner was Montgomery Wards on the SE corner was Palms Center, a pre-mall shopping center but not really a strip center, I don't remember what was on the NE corner.

Big Humphrey was a wrestler. I don't remember where it was on Park Place but I do remember Kolchak's BBQ just west of Telephone Rd., it closed in the last couple of years.

    joe

There was also a Big Boy on 45 South near Monroe - now Mannie's seafood. Big Humphrey's WAS on PArk Place, went there during high school - loved it! He's in Pearland, are we sure? He would have to be over 100 by now...

  15. What I always found interesting about the old Monterrey House was that all of their food was cooked at one location and then shipped out to the stores where they basically just heated everything up, melted the cheese on top and sent it out to your table. Their plant, or commisary as they called it was located in South Houston on Richey just east of Highway 3. Whenever you were in the area you could always smell the food cooking. As a kid I used to go bowl at Meadowcreek Lanes on Richey and would pass the commisary all the time.

Funny you should mention the commisary. It is now a fortune cookie factory (or it was the last time I went by there).

  16. The old Monterey House biuldings are still around - at least some of them.

The ones that jump out at me are Alvin and Dickinson. They are my stores, and I know that they are over 30 years old.

Monterrey House was good... for its time. Today's palates have grown much more sophisticated and there is so much more competition. A restaurant like Monterrey House probably doesn't have a chance anymore in a market like Houston.

However, I do note you singing the praises of Casa Ole. Casa Ole isn't much different than Monterrey House. (I also like Casa Ole, BTW). It's the same Americanized Tex-Mex food. But hey, sometimes that's what I feel like eating. I don't always want the authetic Mexican experience.

Casa Ole probably would have cleaned up in the 1970s, much like Monterrey House did. But now whenever I ask anyone, "want to go to Casa Ole?" they turn their noses. People have gotten more sophisticated in their Mexican food tastes. Sometimes that's good, sometimes not.

Casa Ole acquired Monterey House. It is not Monterey's Little Mexico. Food is GREAT.
