  1. They have xerox machines. They just got new ones. The last time I was there they had not yet hooked up the coin machine to it, so the copies were free. That won't last long and may not be true any longer already.
  2. If there was an earlier school it was not at that location. Here is the 1924 Sanborn Map of that location and it shows no structures:
  3. There is a photo of the Milby Hotel on this web site Milby Hotel
  4. Interesting Article. I don't think her Grandfather had a bakery on Galveston Island during the Texas Revoloution. No one lived on Gaveston Island at that time.
  5. My neighbor was hurt in that explosion. James P. Clooney. I think he retired after that and died not much later Firefighters admitted to hospitals were: James M. Honea, asst. fire chief; Jim P. Clooney, district chief, Sta. 35; and Vernon E. Rogers, district chief, administrative office. James P. Clooney
  6. In the afternoon of June 5, 1953 the Alco Fireworks Plant at 1208 Rosine Street in Montrose exploded with a force of two tons killing two women and two children and injuring about 70 others. It destroyed the warehouse and several houses nearby. In hindsight, having a fireworks plant in the middle of a neighborhood doesn't really seem like a good idea to begin with. Does anyone remember this event? http://i101.photobucket.com/albums/m41/dahornburg/Alco_Fireworks_Explosion.jpg
  7. I think I remember Archie's Magic and Fun Shop was on Main Street and much further up the street like 1300 or 1400 block. Maybe they moved from somewhere else. I'm thinking of the 1970s.
  8. It was originally Albert Sidney Johnston Junior High
  9. From the basement of 102 San Jacinto
  10. The Milby Hotel was on the NW corner of Travis and Texas in the 600 block of Travis. The rest of the block on the east side of Travis was taken up by Montgomery Ward. It was across the street from the Iris Theater on Travis and across the street from the Rice Hotel on Texas.
  11. The article said the building was 120 years old, but it was built in 1857 so it was actually 131 years old when demolished
  12. Bethje-Lang building being converted into Les Quatre Saisons...later Warren's Inn. This building was built in 1857 and torn down in 1988
  13. These photos are from "The last of the past : Houston architecture, 1847 to 1915": an inventory and architectural stylistic history of remaining early commercial buildings, Houston, Texas, 1980 / by William Scott Field for the Greater Houston Preservation Alliance, the Harris County Heritage Society. I used to occasionally eat at Charlie's Barbeque because they were open late I actually think my red arrow was one building too far north
  14. The Travellers Hotel and Cafe was in the 100 block of Main on the West side of the street in the middle of the block. A quick check of Google and it looks like the building is still there. Unless I messed up somewhere the arrow is pointing at the building
  15. This isn't as clear as I would like, but gives you some idea of the layout of Grants
  16. Here is a link to the Texas Handbook Online article on the Turnverein movement. "Verein" means club or organization...the Turn Verein was devoted to athletics or gymnastics, but was a big part of the social life of early Houston. There was also many Shooting Clubs or Schuetzen Verein scattered throughout Harris County including Bear Creek, Spring Branch, White Oak, Braes Bayou.
