I moved from Houston in the mid 80s. Here for the weekend. Needless to say, it's changed!! Anyone know what happened to

Cardis? (I worked at the Cardis in Austin, it was demolished to build a freeway)

This article is several years old, but you'll probably find it of interest. Not sure if the documentary was ever made, but I don't recall hearing anything about it since this was published:

Also, Rockin Houston has photos from several shows there:

Agora Ballroom closed many years ago, and the space it formerly occupied has been quite a few other things since then.

It's ironic that Sears, which started out as a mail order catalog, is getting creamed by the internet.  OTOH, a good chunk of that is self inflicted by some insanely ideological management that's torn the company up from within.

Sears could certainly have been a far healthier company with the prospect of remaining a going concern into the future, if they'd had ownership and management that was actively working to make it so, as opposed to a loathsome hedge-fund asset-stripper.

This piece is about a year and a half old, but the overall trend certainly hasn't changed since then, and its conclusions are on the mark. The first chart pretty much sums it up:

there was a great documentary on Riverside on PBS probably 30 years ago.  It described how a once affluent and Jewish, as I recall, community gave way to neither over the years.  It made the case that the scar that became 288 was the final blow.  I seem to recall that the documentary also highlighted that the community, when built, was "on par" with River Oaks (being built around the same time) but Jews were not welcome in River Oaks so they went to Riverside instead.

Not mentioned in that thread, but the filmmaker also has a website devoted to the film:

It came from a store that specialized in American crafts, in the galleria in the late 70s early 80's. I'm hoping the storm may still be in other markets, so if anyone can recall it,  i'd be grateful. It's a large cobalt blue blown glass lamp with a blown glass lampshade, somewhat art nouveau in style. If anyone has suggestions on repairs i'd appreciate that as well. The piece means a lot to me and has a lot of memories.

That sounds like Hanson Galleries. The owners retired and they closed the business several years ago. At one time they had 2-3 locations in Houston, and I vaguely recall one that was out of state, but by the time they closed I think they were down to a single location.

I'd definitely try the repair place IronTiger linked to above, but be prepared to open your wallet, as professional repair of art glass is not inexpensive.

Looking for someone to refresh my memory. Im trying to remember a cafeteria that was in the Bellaire Shopping Center on Bellaire Blvd. It was a family name, not Luby's Wyatt's or Piccadilly..........I want to say it started with an 'S'....or possibly an 'A'....

Allbritton's. They were a local, family-owned cafeteria that had several locations in Houston, including the one you remember at 3835 Bellaire Blvd. The last remaining one was on Waugh and closed in 1996.

More info from a Chron article at the top of this page:

I have never been to central market.....

There is a spot there that you can CONSUME  beer?  Is this new or has it always been there?

It's new, added as part of the remodel. They had a very extensive beer and wine selection in the pre-renovation CM, but no actual taproom serving beer.

    2017 Alfa Romeo Stelvio

The headlamps are enormous, but this thing is very menacing with its aggressive front end and powerful engine. Much better than it's somewhat-related Italian rival, the Maserati Levante.

When discussion of this "new Alfa" ensued on another forum I'm on, someone groused that Fiat Chrysler Automobiles was coming out with "a mid-size SUV with a snake eating a guy on it", but it clearly wasn't an Alfa, as there hadn't been an Alfa Romeo built since 1986.

Personally, I'm not ready to throw the latter-day entity that goes by the name Alfa Romeo that far under the bus, but as someone who owned a pre-1986 Alfa, I can appreciate the sentiment behind that statement.

  8. I think this was a very good hire on the Mayor's part. I have friends in Austin that are upset that he's leaving, as he is very well-respected there.

I'd expect to see some changes in both the city and county law enforcement landscapes given that we now have a new DA, Sheriff, and Chief of Police.

  9. Just noticed last night that Chippendale Eastlake Antiques on the corner of 19th and Rutland is gone - space has been cleared out and there is a for lease sign on the front of the building.

Anyone know what happened to them? Gone out of business, moved elsewhere, untenable rent increase, or something else? They seemed like a fixture in that spot, and had been there as long as I've been living in the area. I don't think Braun will have much trouble leasing the space, as something that size in the center of activity on 19th doesn't become available very often.

I am wondering how many of the new posters are individual users.  I doubt that it's 1 ID = 1 human.

I had assumed that admins/mods had the ability to view the originating IP addresses for posts. I believe this is the case in the free version of Invision's board software, so it ought to be in the paid version as well.

Rain delay? More like conception delay. How many babies were conceived during that rain delay in Chicago? How many within hours of the team winning?

Chicago is poised to have a population explosion!

aka the "Cubbie Boom", dealing a grievous setback to Houston's efforts to catch and surpass Chicago for the number three spot.

Guess we need the Texans to win a Super Bowl to level the playing field again. They might be able to do that in less time than it took the Cubs to win the Series, but I'm not holding my breath.

  12. Francona deserves AL Manager of the Year, and it shouldn't even be close. To lose two of your starters to injuries, then still come into the playoffs and stomp two very good teams like the Jays and the Red Sox before taking the team all but anointed to win it all since the beginning of the season to extra innings in Game 7 is an achievement that can't be understated. Cleveland can certainly be proud of what they accomplished this season, and I would not be surprised to see a rematch in next year's Series.

If Cleveland wins the World Series, I think Houston will take on the title of most hard luck city in all of sports.

Depends on how you define it.

The Coyote Acre name actually has nothing to do with the type of place it is going to be but actually deals with the amount of sighted coyotes on this property. I've heard at least 4 coyotes (possibly a few pups) have been spotted here.

I've seen coyotes in the back part of Hollywood Cemetery (furthest away from 45) on several occasions.

  15. That's too bad, I never got a chance to check it out. I have to think that they'd probably do better with a location inside the loop. Or maybe not, perhaps I'm overestimating the number of people who remember eating at the original locations.

  16. Heard about: I'd have to go with the ammonia truck as well.

Seen: I didn't actually see it happen, but came upon the scene immediately after it occurred a few years ago. 610 eastbound at the interchange with 45 North/South. The entire engine and transmission from what had been a midsize Chrysler sedan was sitting in the middle of one of the lanes on fire. The person who was presumably the driver had been ejected from the vehicle and was lying on the side of the road. Think about the massive force required to detach the entire powertrain from a vehicle. It was as if someone had extracted the engine/tranny with an engine hoist and deposited it in the roadway.
