So between this, the elevated I-10, and the NHHIP, there will be continuous construction along I-10 from Voss Rd. to Waco St. over the next decade or longer. Yippee! /s

I can't say I'm surprised. Remember, there are entire generations that have been born, lived, and died without ever knowing a time when the Gulf Freeway wasn't under construction somewhere.

Probably tho  when thinking up a name for their boutique hotel, the guys at Mighty Equity were thinking of something romantic, and jazzy like the Cole Porter lyrics:

....a trip to the moon on gossamer wings

    ....just one  of those things

Maybe it's to evoke fluffy, happy, jazzy clouds of relaxation, or something.  Like Cole Porter wrote:  "a trip to the moon on gossamer wings."

Cole Porter's lyric is the first thing I thought of as well. I'm starting to suspect that the target market for this hotel is either old, gay, or both.

My first thought when I saw this picture was "I can just imagine the collective meltdown r/f***cars would have if they saw this", then I checked your link and realized that's exactly where it had come from. 😂

I just want to comment that 70mm would have been great for “Oppenheimer.” I found this post while going down the rabbit hole on that. And that’s it.

The AMC Gulf Pointe 30 screened OPPENHEIMER in 70mm here during its initial run. It may be the only local theater that still has the ability to screen 70mm prints - it was certainly the only one that booked OPPENHEIMER in that format.

You may have already seen this, but it's the best summary I've run across of the various formats OPPENHEIMER was screened in:

    OPPENHEIMER PREMIUM LARGE FORMATS

IMAX 70mm (aka "real" IMAX, as opposed to the digital-projector format that's now being branded as "IMAX" but is more frequently referred to as "LIEMAX" by those in the know) was the premier option, but IIRC there are only around 15-20 theaters in the entire country that were equipped for that format, and the closest one to Houston was in Dallas. The Chinese Theatre in Hollywood built a temporary IMAX 70mm projection booth and installed all the necessary equipment for the film's run there.

trust me, i have personally witnessed these particular and remarkable fetes of mankind many times... especially in dubai, uae.

It's indeed remarkable what can be accomplished when state-sponsored industries have no aversion to employing coercive labor practices that border on slavery.

I liked Maldonado and so did many of the pitchers, even though lots of fans didn't.

Yeah, the continual chorus of people throwing him under the bus on the Astros subreddit got really tiresome. Dude was never going to be Ted Williams, but he added value to the team in other ways besides hitting.

My guess is the WF on Yale/610 re-locates here. That location was opened as a “365” concept and is really undersized for the area.

Someone on Nextdoor posted not too long ago that a cashier at that location had told them that the store was going to be permanently closing, but I have yet to see a single mention of this elsewhere. Given the unimpeachable veracity of the average Nextdoor post, I'm not holding my breath waiting for it to happen.

I had to get my standard Walker Street / Houstonian / whatever it's called now and tamales with chili cheese with Coney Delaware Punch. The taste was still there for just about everything.

I haven't been to a JCI since the one near 45 and Crosstimbers closed, but the Walker Street combo and the tamale plate were likewise my go-tos, although I'd get one or the other as opposed to both. I wonder how many people that order the Walker Street combo now ever ate at the original Walker Street location?

He will be missed. I hope the Astros can keep him on in some capacity. I believe he has much valuable insight to offer the younger players.

He's said that he's looking forward to spending more time with his family and being present for his kids while they grow up, but I likewise would love to see him transition to a new role as a hitting coach for us.

Childhood memories, it was my go to store to see Santa in the 1960s. Also, it's just an interesting mid-century design. Maybe relace the neon in the same style, but with the new development name.

There aren't a whole lot of original mid-century signs of that scale around, so there's definitely value in preserving it, especially considering existing signs are grandfathered under the COH sign code. If the developers are smart they'll do as you suggest and replace the Sears logo with the new development name, but if that happens I'd be surprised if they didn't convert the neon to LED lighting. Even in the capital of neon, Las Vegas, it's become common for large outdoor neon signs in need of repair to be converted to LED - the glass tubing makes neon expensive and comparatively hard to work with, while LED lighting has improved significantly in recent years. Many LED conversions used to look pretty bad, but now if they're done properly, the average person probably won't notice the difference from neon. Personally, I prefer neon, but I understand why someone would opt to replace it.

I don't watch a lot of sports, and won't pay for cable to get more, although we did get originally Sling to watch Astros playoff games, and then kept it because it has channels my wife likes - Bravo, Food Network, etc.

I am still amazed at how good OTA quality can be, and we watch all of the Houston area broadcast channels OTA. Of course, the sub channels like 2.1, 2.2, etc are still 480, but that's not a big deal most of the time.

I watched most of the original Hawaii 5-0 on streaming at 1080. The remastered video was unreal in quality. That's one advantage of those shows originally being done on film.

I wasn't aware that the original Five-O was streaming at 1080 - looks like you have to have Paramount + to get it now. There hasn't ever been a hi-def physical media release, only DVD, so this is one time when streaming bests physical media. At least until the series gets put "back in the vault" for an undetermined length of time, anyway.

Get yourself an antenna for your TV. About 100 channels, and the quality is better than the compressed crap you get with cable. We use a Mohu Leaf that we've had for over 10 years, when we dropped cable. Works great.

I have a Mohu Leaf. I also have cable and Amazon Prime Video. Unfortunately, if watching live sports is a priority, you're not going to get very far without either cable or one of the streaming services.

But it's always entertaining to see the reactions of people whose only frame of reference for OTA TV is fiddling with a pair of rabbit ears on grandma's old CRT set when they see the picture quality of modern digital OTA compared to cable.

I hate Cle Group. They're just a bunch of dbags who want to make a quick buck. What they've done to the old Christian Science Church is ridiculous. And all they seem to attract are wannabe gangsters in 2023 Camaros

Camaro production ended on November 22. Charger and Challenger production likewise ends on December 31. These are sad times in the four-wheeled d-bag community.

I wasn't familiar with this shop, but after spending a few minutes yesterday enlarging the photo, squinting at the address on the door, and finally determining the name of the business, I likewise tracked down their website. Judging from their Flickr page that documents some of the projects they've worked on, their mechanical and metalworking skills are quite impressive.

I actually wasn’t aware of Castillo’s sexual preference until I read about it here on HAIF but the flyer didn’t doom Reyes-Revilla’s campaign.  She was the underdog in this race by a long shot.  She was never going to win.

I didn't get the flyer in the mail, but I did get the robocall. Anecdotally, I saw a lot more Reyes-Revilla signs around the neighborhood than Castillo signs, but it was pretty clear that she was fighting a rearguard action without much hope of victory even before she shot herself in the foot. I'm kind of amazed that she'd play the gay card in 2023 - for a minute I thought we must be back in 1985 again, with a different Mayor Whitmire, "Don't Shoot Louie", and the "Straight Slate".

Did anyone else notice the weird grammar and spelling mistakes on the threatening letter to the Houston hospitals? You would think professional correspondence would be better worded.  Embarrassing.

It's Ken Paxton. "Embarrassing" is on-brand for him.

Great, but when I see "fusion" in a restaurant description I think "we've run out of ideas."

"Fusion" used in a restaurant context usually shares at least one trait with artificially-induced nuclear fusion - lots of hype, but nowhere near ready for prime time.
