How about Kelley's as a steakhouse?!
Only if you are talking chicken fried steak!

Do you think we will ever see the day there is a Red Lobster built at Gulfgate? Serious.
and while I'm at it what about...
An upscale Japanese Restaurant
Ristorante Italiano
PF Chang's
upscale Steak House
see where I'm going with this? No I'm not drinking as I type this.
Red Lobster I could live without. Upscale Japanese, I'm afraid we will be going downtown or midtown for that (its not that far anyway), as for Italian, old George's on Park Place isn't bad. Certainly not upscale, but decent food. PF Chang's, ehhh, just another chain, who needs it with 888 there. As for upscale steak places, how is Bonnie's or whatever it is called across the freeway? I have never been there so I don't know. It looks nice on the outside.

What are highlights?
A ladies shoe line carried by Pay-Less. Very cheap basically. Back when I was in the apartment business they were the leasing agents friend. Many would start out wearing their good shoes until they ended up having to show in the rain, or sludging through a water logged sidewalk. Most learned to keep their good shoes at home and stocked up on the good old Highlights for work.

There is a good archive picture here.
What a loss...

We're open to ANY suggestions from the good people in this forum. I like -- for the most part! -- what I read here and the "ethos" expressed. We're looking for quality, beyond probably what we can afford, an aesthetic, but also safety and (reasonable) convenience to downtown & TMC. Having lived now almost ten years on the West side of town, we know "a little bit" about a lot of neighborhoods, and many of them seem WAY out of our price range.
Thanks to all.
Do you really need 2500 sq ft? This may be where you might need to make your compromise, if you can and still be happy with the choice.
You could get the location etc in Idylwood, but not the size. You might try Meadowcreek Village, over off of Allendale and Monroe. There are some nice sections in there with some sizeable homes in that price range.
Have you thought about going a little to the southwest of the med center into Post Oak Manor, Willowbrook & Westbury? These are not the new-style homes with the high ceilings, open floorplans, etc. But when "moving in" these are the sort of compromises you have to be prepared to make unless you have a ton of money to spend.

You can see other examples of this design in Walnut Bend which is located south of Memorial Bend, just across the bayou. They are in the south end, first section, of the neighborhood and built around 1960. It is suggested on the Memorial Bend website that these were designed by William Floyd and staff who designed most of the outstanding houses in Memorial Bend. The Memorial Bend website features some photos of these houses but is not presently accessible. There is another house like this currently for sale in Westbury at 5838 West Airport. The flat roof has unfortunately been altered on this example.
5838 West Airport
I've been in that one. The carport has been taken in, interior walls removed, but originally it was the same floorplan.

I've been in that house and always thought it held enormous potential. Spaceage thought it might have been a Floyd Design. Despite its modest size, it really could be an impressive house. It is encouraging to see more of these get into the hands of people that know what to do with them.

At a community meeting tonight in Glenbrook, it was brought up by one of Carol Alvarado's assistants that there is a move afoot to take out the golf course at Gus Wortham and replace it with a soccer field. Has anybody else heard about this? I think that would be a terrible move for the area.
-
I asked Ben Koush about the house, he was not familiar with it. I have also asked the Listing Agent for verification on the Architect. I don't know if the original plans are in it or not. I will let everyone know what I find out.

Back in September, I bitched on this forum about the old Dinner Bell cafeteria padding my bill. I ended up going back, and once again, they padded the bill. I would ve very careful if you go there and use a debit or credit card.

My apologies I didn't read the agent's comments well enough in the listing. That's what I get for surfing mods and taking property calls at the same time. Anyway here is a copy and paste of the agent comments from the listing agent.
"Nationally known modern architect, Harwood Taylor of Taylor and Neuhaus designed 8502 Dashwood with features of three of the residences that won Houston's 2007 Good Brick Award. The award winners and 8502 Dashwood boast floor-to-ceiling windows and long rectilinear lines. The Greater Houston Preservation Alliance is a nonprofit which gives the award. This year, for the first time since the preservation-award program was launched in 1979, most of the winning homes were built after 1950."
I just read that part, it is sort of confusing.
-
Does anybody know the background on this house? How do we know it's a Harwood Taylor btw? Is there some archives or something on it?
-
Sold to an architect who is restoring it
That's good news. I have been in that one & it was a good one.
-
I don't remember all the good brick award winners, but are you sure this was one of them? I know there was the house off Memorial and Jason & Vanessa's William Jenkin's design on Willowisp that were winners for 2007. I didn't remember there being a third mod house.

Does Ruth have a daughter named Iwona?
She has two daughters, I want to say one is named Suzanne, I don't know the other one's name.

I graduated from Milby as a Mid-termer in January of 1962 and also attended Bonner Elementary and Deady Junior High. We lived on Howard Drive in Meadowbrook from 1945 until 1962. After that I lived in various parts of Southwest Houston. I've been in the Spring area for over 30 years. We had good friends that lived both next door and accross the street from Paul Boesch. He had met his wife in Hawaii while in the service during WWII. I attended several neighborhood parties with them. They were both very nice people.
My house on Glencrest is supposedly next door to Paul Boesch's old house. The lady that has lived across the street since '68 told me it was his old house. Did you know the Provenzano's next door? I bought the house from Ruth Provenzano who moved to Meyerland to be closer to her daughter. The Boesch house, or so I am told, is the one on the corner of Glencrest and Glenview.

What was the name of that big disco that used to be where the Admiral Linen Factory is now, right off Alabama/Shepherd? I was in there one night when they actually raided the place.
Possibly the "OP" Old Plantation?

Thank you, for that review, Ms. Curmudgeon.
So says Mr. Curmudgeon!!

Yes, they do have wi fi. I intend to come back and I will be bringing my iBook with me.
My family has lived in the East End for quite some time now. Brother still lives in the homestead. Cafe Flores is hiring students to serve and when I went there, I advised the young man behind the counter about the religious aspects of coffee drinking. ( I am an old, old woman...I can get away with that now. Of course, to that young man, anything over 30 is ancient...)
For example:
If the person is going to be dining in, give them coffee in one of the heated cups (unless it's some of your school buddies...they do not know the difference and probably go for the most amount anyway)
Everything about coffee drinking should be a religious experience. To drink your coffee out of anything else but a real cup, either china or at least some type of cup that retains heat well is inexcusable unless you are taking it to go.
So, first question to ask is: Will you be dining in or will this be carryout?
If it is carryout, then use the disposable cups, otherwise, use the real cups.
I had the ham and swiss cheese sandwich and also had a salad as well. They stopped making the salads from spinach and I encouraged them to try buying their spinach from Central Market because Central Market does not use bagged spinach at all. Their spinach comes from Colorado and to me it just tastes better.
The other thing I told him when he asked if I wanted the combo meal was to please not call it a combo meal. I am not trying to be critical here, but if I wanted a combo meal, I would go to that place that has the golden arches. I requested that he find another name for the meal. Or simply ask if I want chips with the meal. Which, by the way, I did not.
By the way, in case this got lost in my post, I happen to love the place. In fact, I am thinking of moving back to the East End based just on this information alone.
Now, if only there was a place that sold fresh produce so I would not have to drive all the way to the Montrose area or to the Central Market.
America (it's not just a country, it's a woman's name)
I'm just glad I wasn't in line behind you!

Barnaby's (3 locations in the greater Montrose area)
Brown Bag Deli (also owned by Barnaby's, really good sandwiches cheap)
Most chinese food places for lunch.
Teotijuacan (3 locations, one on Bellfort near Fondren)
Java-Java (11th st. Heights)
Buffalo Grill (2 locations)
Amazon Grill
Paulie's (2 locations, moderate but not dirt cheap)
Kelly's (2 locations, one near Hobby)
Frank's Grill (3 locations, Telephone Rd, by NW Mall & on Clinton)
Tel-Wink (Telephone & Winkler)
Dot Diner - Gulfgate
Dinner Bell Cafeteria (Wayside & Lawndale)
Cafe Express (numerous locations)
Baba Yega's (Pacific & Grant)
Niko Niko's (Montrose)
This is it Soul Food (W. Gray)
Some of these are better than others, some are cheaper than others, but its a good start.

The prices (maint fee aside) seem quite reasonable for that building. At one time there was an issue that the building sat on land that was leased for 100 years. I think it was built in 1911 so the lease on the land was set to expire. I had heard it was renegotiated or somehow resolved, but that would be one thing I would investigate.

First New Orleans Po' Boys, then Diedrich's, then Helios, now this...
Is every cool place in Houston under assault?
If a buyer can be found to reopen the place, I hope they don't fix it up too much. Sometimes people scrub the charm right out.
The Pig Stand allowed me to brag that my butt has occupied the same stool as Shirley MacLaine's. It was one of the settings used in The Evening Star.
Yes, but it could use some scrubbing. I am a big fan of "comfort food" like they served at the Pig, but the lack of cleanliness there kind of kept me from going very often.

The Beaconsfield on main were built as either condos or apartments originally.
That round hi-rise is really nice on Woodway. Executive house, not to be confused with the old Executive house on Alabaman. It has this Japanese style garden in the back with these ponds, and a section of flat roof mod guests houses that look straight out of Palm Springs. It is a really interesting building.

Is the house this one on Glen Forest?
