  1. Wow, I was just at this store before the closing. I didn't even know they had closed. The store was pretty small in comparison to Veritas on Chimney Rock. When I went there I found parking out front, but I had to be buzzed in and the door was locked behind me. I believe that they may have been worried about safety at the location. Things may have changed in the 50 years it had been open, and they may have felt unsafe. As a young female, I wouldn't want to work somewhere that I had to buzz people in.
  2. I didn't buy, I'm renting a home. It took FOREVER for me to sell my heights home, and I didn't want to get into that again. I really like Brookwood, but didn't consider brook forest. Homes are a little older. I wanted less maintenance. As for Clear Lake restaraunts, I think there are some good options: *Perry's steakhouse and Perry's italian *Thai Cottage is tasty, Thai Seafood is a bit better and more authentic *Angelos has some nice lunch specials *Joe Lee's (on 2094) is good seafood, if a little on the 'no frills' side *Topwater grill in San Leon...just fantastic...y'all have to check that out *There's a restaraunt in waterford harbor I hit for lunch one day...gosh what is the name...looks out on all the docked sailboats. Great food. *T-bone Toms...in the non commercial section of Kemah...good for some BBQ if you can handle the traffic *Tookie's...simply the best burgers I could go on. For bars, I like the laid back scene, so I enjoy Boondoggles or Molly's. Papasito's is good for a tidal wave margarita. Certainly not the place to go clubbing, but I'm not into that much anymore. Anyway....since my commute will be 7 minutes vs. 1 hour each direction, i'm excited about the move. I think that living in a suburb is all what you make it...if you choose to eat at all the chains, then it won't be interesting. Takes a bit more exploring than in the loop, but there are some great places. Hokieone - avoid Bay Area and Nasa 1 like the plauge. from bay oaks, go south on space center and turn right on bay area, then make a left on saturn. You can then turn right on gemini / hercules / medical center and take it all the way to 45. I take el dorado coming from 45. The least conjested road in the mornings. Go Hokies! (I'm class of 2000)
  3. I'm moving from the Heights to Clear Lake to get away from the crime in my neighborhood and lessen the commute. I lived there in an apartment ~5 years ago. I enjoy that the water is close, that people keep their property looking nice, and that you can have any type of neighborhood you want - from custom homes on wooded lots to homes on the water with boat docks. It is pretty peaceful down there but I wouldn't call it 'sleepy'....there are actually a good number of young people who work down at JSC/NASA and over in Baytown who live in those neighborhoods. Clear Lake City proper doesn't have any new construction, while Seabrook and further south (SH 96) are being developed rapidly. I agree that the traffic is pretty bad, but I don't have another suburb to compare it to. It is certainly worse than traffic in the heights. Probably not as bad as traffic in the med center. When I was looking to buy the neighborhoods I considered were: Brookwood, Bay Forest, Pine Brook and Bay Oaks. We were going for the 'wooded lot' feel...and I wanted to be in Clear lake city and away from the new construction (for resale). I'd get with a realtor specific to the area to tell you about the schools, etc. Even if you don't have kids, the schools are important for resale. I think all neighborhoods in greater Houston are pretty diverse, but I'm not sure you'd find a lot of folks screaming 'hey I'm a liberal!' on the corners in any suburb. Agree that you'd be best of in Montrose if that interested you...
  4. Bringing more residents in the area sounds like a good plan to me - I support a nice complex going in there. I just wonder...that complex right on I-10 between Studewood and Heights (on the westbound feeder) isn't fully leased I don't think...and it has been there quite some time. I wonder how they will fill this one?
  5. I have to agree that the WAY Ahsland's was demolished was what instigated the negative reaction. Though I'm not sure the reaction would have been much better if it had been anounced...but at least people could have had time to digest what was happening. Sounds like the developer didn't really understand the heights or the impact his actions would have. As a businessman, he should have done a bit more research. Sad that it will be empty now. I wonder if a reasonable structure will be built in its place? Probably the best we can hope for at this time is a new victorian structure...hopefully custom, maybe a B&B or something...?
  6. MiDTOWNeR - do you care to elaborate? I had a somewhat frightening experience that I felt was appropriate to share in this forum, as many people who shop there have been reading it. I am a young woman and don't enjoy being harassed in the parking lot of any store. I am not anti-target...I'm pretty neutral on the whole thing actually. If you feel my post was meant to scare folks away from shopping there, you have misread it and you are mistaken.
  7. That dog wisperer guy does seem pretty amazing sometimes... At any rate, the guy in the parking lot didn't appear to be homeless or a street person...just a scam artist / creepy guy. He was young and certainly looked like he had a home....his clothes weren't dirty or anything. He was just a creep that looked like he wanted to distract you while someone else grabbed yoru purse or something. Sketchy. Maybe the guard left early? I dont know, I didn't see any guards or police, as it was close to closing time. This guy was there when we went in AND when we left...so he couldn't have avoided the cops for that long...
  8. FYI for the new Target shoppers... I went to this store last night at ~8:30PM to pick somehting up quickly and was harassed in the parking lot by a guy looking for money. Well, I assume that is what he wanted - my friend and I gave him a stern 'NO' as soon as he got the 'I was wondering if you could help me out' words out of his mouth. He was targeting all the young women leaving the store. We high tailed it to the car and fortunately he did not follow us. I called Target about this today and they seemend very concerned and took down a description. My friend also went there today and spoke with a manager about it. So, they are aware of the problem. I did not see any security there, though they say that there is an undercover cop there all the time. Maybe he had left? It was close to closing time.... Just an FYI...ladies, be careful
  9. lwood - thanks for the update. As a Nicholson resident, I am SO READY for this thing to get started! Have you noticed a decrease in the trash dumping along Nicholson recently? I've found that a good way to speed up dumped trash pickup is to aquire email addresses of several people in neighborhood protection and email them pictures of trash dumps and copy Councilman Garcia. Hopefully the trail will put an end to it...but until then...
  10. HeightsGuy - I just don't understand why a label like "yuppie" or "DINK" needs to be used at all. We are all residents of the Heights. I'm pretty sure we all want the same thing - a safe, well constructed, nice looking trail. If someone on a Trek is run over by a Lexus SUV backing out of his or her driveway...it probably won't be good for anybody....:-) I can understand your frustration...as a mountain biker, I can't wait for the trail to be built. It'll be great to hit the trails from right across the street!. Just stating that the *new residents* of the heights aren't always the bad guys. Not everything is black and white.
  11. I live on Nicholson Street. I'm not sure if I'm a yuppie, and I'm certainly not rich, but I'm looking forward to the trail and most certainly do not believe that it will attract vagrants. On the contrary, the new trail + additional lighting should assist in putting an end to some of the incessantly annoying dumping that goes on on the city ROW. It is possible that the folks with a house backing up to the ROW did not know much about it when moving into the Heights. We didn't learn much about the ROW from our builder. If they had questions, i'm glad that they got them answered. And if the plan can be modified to be a better solution for all, why not take it? I don't post here often, I'm just sad that the new home owners get such a bad rap from time to time. Please don't lump us all together. If you saw some of the homes that were cleared on Nicholson recently for new construction, you would see that what they are building, even if not the most unique homes or best use of large lots, is an enormous improvement to what was there. I am very happy to see it. -Denise
  12. New to this site... Does anybody know anything about an establishment called "Jamie's Place", planned for construction on land facing Herkimer, but backing up to Nicholson, between 11th and 12th? Right accross from the Nicholson Street Townhome complex by Perry... Scared homeowner...hoping its not a strip club or something... Thanks!
