He was totally joking. They’ve paved over portions of the Commerce St. tracks in multiple places, so it wouldn’t even be possible at this point.

On the new East End Bike Plan, the Commerce stretch seems to be a target for development. I’m holding out hope that they pull out the railroad tracks and repave the entire street, adding high-comfort bike lanes.

I hope they keep the tracks and incorporate them in the new bike-friendly design. I love keeping that old history and character. Like the brick streets that you can still see in the Fourth Ward.

  2. I walk by here daily, and while I am all for affordable housing, I have mixed feelings about how much this building will dwarf all of the other buildings/ houses in the neighborhood. They're not even done building the second story yet, and I already think it's pretty looming, so we'll see how five stories will look.

Maybe I need to just get over it because that's how it'll have to be in the future to add urban density. I hope they add some nice trees at least.

  3. Noticed they demolished the warehouse at 5601 Canal the other week. They've made good progress in clearing the space.

It's the future site of mixed-income housing called the Canal Lofts. 150 units and a senior (?) community (http://www.blazerbuilding.com/portfolio/construction/) Their website says spring 2021, but I'm sure that's been pushed back since they haven't even fully cleared the land yet.

Some more info from CoH about funding: https://houstontx.gov/housing/communication/2020/plain/0622.html

Will try to snap some photos next time we walk past.

  4. Their headquarters are in the East End (on Navigation near Turkey Bend), and I always found it interesting that there are so few stations on the East Side. I bet it's a function of starting a pilot where people would be more likely to use it (Downtown, Midtown, Montrose) and expanding from there... but it would be nice to see more around here.

I added a bunch of station suggestions on Navigation, especially near the Esplanade!

A Quirky New Bar Devoted to the Sport of Pickleball Will Soon Arrive in the Second Ward

At the awkwardly named Bumpy Pickle, find nine pickleball courts and a full menu of food and cocktails

    by Brittanie Shey@brittanieshey  Feb 11, 2021, 9:30am CST

A quirky new sports bar is set to bring the game of pickleball to the Second Ward later this spring.

The Bumpy Pickle, at 554 Lockwood Drive next to Eastwood Park, will have nine courts for the growing sport, plus five sand volleyball courts, and an indoor-outdoor bar area with almost two acres of space for social distancing. The bar is a project from Good Times LLC, who also opened Sports Creek in Eado in 2017, a bar that has soccer and volleyball courts and seasonal league play.

Food-wise, the Bumpy Pickle will offer brunch, lunch and dinner, though exact details are scant. The bar will also serve craft beer and cocktails. The space will also eventually host concerts, private parties and corporate events.

Pickleball, considered one of the fastest-growing sports in the US, is a combination of tennis, ping pong and badminton, played on a netted court with paddles and a ball. Its popularity is growing in Texas, with more than 2,000 players in Houston and regular games at the Fonde Rec Center off Sabine Street. Recently, a Kansas City chain called Chicken N Pickle announced plans to expand to North Texas

And when it arrives, The Bumpy Pickle will be yet another Eastside bar focused on big outdoor spaces. East End Backyard, which opened in October 2020, was also created with the intention to give Second Ward and Greater Eastside residents with little or no outdoor space a place to hang out.

Stay tuned for an exact opening date and more concrete menu details form The Bumpy PIckle.

  6.

Be more precise in your writing, then.

Businesses engaged with the community by providing jobs, many of them paying pretty well.

I respectfully disagree. Businesses may provide jobs, but think of all the folks who commute, especially when you build an office campus somewhere like Greenspoint that have been historically and currently neglected. Those workers probably take the majority of their wages and spend them in other places.

I applaud businesses and developers that are willing to work and listen to the communities they plan to move into and provide a thoughtful approach with how to work with communities to improve the surrounding neighborhood.

Tiny Champions, the Much-Anticipated Pizzeria From the Minds Behind Nancy’s Hustle, Opens Today
Pizza, ice cream by the scoop, and natural wines await at the sister spot to one of Houston’s best restaurants

The wait is finally, blessedly, over — Tiny Champions, the much-anticipated new pizzeria from the team behind EaDo favorite Nancy’s Hustle, officially opens its doors today.

The restaurant announced that it would begin taking reservations via booking platform Resy in an Instagram post on Thursday night. As previously reported by Eater, Tiny Champions occupies the space at 2716 McKinney Street, and will serve up a menu of pizza that’s leavened using natural fermentation methods. Ice cream by the scoop, natural wines, and pasta, will also be on the menu.

The restaurant takes its name from the teensy microbes, or “tiny champions,” that make essentials like bread and wine possible. Via its Instagram, Tiny Champions has been teasing the dishes that will be on offer, like an anchovy pizza topped with shaved garlic, salsa verde, and red sauce, and spicy squid radiatore pasta with octopus.

Reservations for Tiny Champions are now open, and they’re going fast.
