  1. Is it really "currently being restored"? I thought it was still at the talking/hoping stage.

Yes, the team is now one year into the clean up and has about a year left to go. Right now 300+ apartments are being considered, but the project may ultimately contain hotel rooms. Here are some photos from my visit one year later.

The team has acquired original plans for the building and are bringing it back to the 1950s appearance. The facade has been cleaned and blue LEDs will highlight the design. The recent discovery of the Jack Lubin mural has also made headlines.

  2. How does funding for these types of projects work? I read in an earlier message that federal transportation funds were allocated for this bridge. Do these dollars cover the entire cost of the bridge - as designed by Calatrava - or do they only cover the cost of a 'basic' bridge, with funds to make it 'pretty' coming from local/private sources?

    That's right.

The Margaret Hunt Hill bridge was funded through bond programs and the Regional Transportation Council/Texas Transportation Partnership ($30 million). $5 million in private donations were raised, and the Hunt family donated $12 million.

TxDOT has committed funds for a replacement bridge for I-30 (the Margaret McDermott Bridge). These funds are for a basic replacement structure with Calatrava designing the frontage roads/bike/pedestrian elements. Extra design elements are being paid for through donations and $92 in federal earmarks.

I-35 bridge is still awaiting funding.

  3. It's an interesting bridge, but definitely not my favorite work by Calatrava. There has been a lot of talk about how this will open up new opportunities for West Dallas (mostly by real estate speculators), traditionally the most poverty-stricken area of Dallas. Developers are already starting to make plans for new projects (Trinity Groves pictured below opens at the base of the bridge this summer, along with a new brewery) but it's a long-term vision. The Continental Bridge will begin its transformation into a bike/pedestrian park when this bridge opens.

I'm looking forward to the design of the next bridge (for I-30) which should be revealed soon, and will also be designed by Calatrava.

Now H&M has a two-level store under construction in Mesquite’s Town East Mall, according to information on a city of Mesquite building permit. It will be between Dillard’s and Sears. At more than 19,700 square feet, the store is about the same size as the one under construction in Plano at the Shops at Willow Bend.

Federal agency clears way for construction of streetcar line linking Oak Cliff to downtown Dallas

Dallas can begin building the first leg of what city officials hope will be a robust streetcar line linking downtown Dallas and Oak Cliff, now that the $35 million project has cleared its federal environmental hurdles.

The Federal Transit Authority issued a “finding of no significant impact” last week, the North Central Texas Council of Governments announced Tuesday.

The finding, necessary for construction to begin, means crews could begin work as soon as March. The line could be operational as early as December 2013, DART spokesman Morgan Lyons said last week.

Plano’s Shops at Willow Bend has scored Texas’ second H&M store.

The almost 19,000-square-foot store will be open before Thanksgiving, a couple of months after Sweden’s fast-fashion apparel chain Hennes & Mauritz opens its first Texas store at NorthPark Center.

It’s tricky to rock a rail line, but celebration shows public that A-train service ready for Monday debut

    The A-train has arrived.

Greeting the Denton County Transportation Authority’s long-awaited passenger rail line Saturday were public officials and hundreds of area residents — young and old — eager for their first taste of the new connection to Carrollton and beyond.

The Rock n’ Rail celebration featured train rides, musical performances and vendors at each of the five DCTA depots. Milling about the Downtown Denton Transit Center were Mayor Mark Burroughs, U.S. Rep. Michael Burgess, R-Lewisville, and state Rep. Myra Crownover, R-Denton, among other area officials.

“There is no downside,” Denton resident Kelly Pound said as she walked to the downtown station.

Interurban train service not a unique concept for area

12:39 AM CDT on Sunday, June 19, 2011

By Les Cockrell / Region Editor

EDITOR’S NOTE: The historical information in this story was supplied through the Denton County Historical Museum and in a piece written by longtime resident and historian Mike Cochran.

Some of those who climb aboard the A-train for one of its long-awaited inaugural runs will no doubt believe they are local trendsetters, riding the crest of a wave of change brought about by growing traffic congestion, rising fuel costs and worsening air quality.

While the A-train will provide an alternative way for residents to get to work or attend an event, the idea of a commuter rail line is nothing new.

The plan for today’s A-train service won voter approval in 2003, but historians and even some longtime residents can testify that the idea for this type of service between Denton and the Dallas area dates back well beyond that date.

  8. I'm currently working on a project to create a comprehensive map of the Dallas Pedestrian Network. The network in the past has been neglected and wayfinding is terrible, so I'm hoping this project will help improve connections and visibility of the system.

    http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/dfwcre8tive/designing-a-map-for-the-dallas-pedestrian-network?

Houston's system seems to have a much better wayfinding system and naming system, but are the tunnel entrances from the streets clearly marked? In the near future there will be plans to update or repurpose the system of corridors that run through downtown Dallas. Many people want to see them abandoned, but I believe the real problem is connectivity between ground level and the pedestrian network.

What are you thoughts on pedestrian networks in an urban setting?

  9. Here's a tour and some photos of the Dallas Statler Hilton. It's currently being restored; there are a lot of great Mid-Century features hidden under countless renovations.

And photos of the old Dallas Public Library next door. Together they form the best block of 1950s architecture in Dallas. The hotel has been vacant for 10 years; the library, nearly 30.
