  1. Montrose tenants won't pay Kirby rents. Anything like West Ave. was never really an option at Montrose and Westheimer. And thank goodness, because Kirby tenants would completely ruin the appeal of Montrose.

    ditto!

does anyone know if the montrose blvd conservancy is still kicking? the walkable montrose plan would certainly solidify this area as "walkable".

i like this location for this building; however, i'd like it even more if the montrose blvd improvements were progressing. i do not see any activity on the conservancy website since '08.

  2. market street reports..."Openings scheduled by this fall include Schilleci’s New Orleans Kitchen where diners can enjoy the restaurant’s unique taste of New Orleans with great-tasting gumbo, hearty po-boys and other favorites. Another Market Street newcomer is The Cupcakery, a family-owned business with locations in Las Vegas and Dallas where more than one million cupcakes have been enjoyed."

a flying saucer town center location rumor has resurfaced....could be a good sign. although disappointed that a red onion concept did not materialize in the sirenuse' space at 24 waterway, the (fingers crossed) soon to be announced location taker will surely make other suburbs green with envy.

a martini bar concept is about to pop up somewhere in town center. an eye witness noticed some official looking "look-see" going on at the old chocolata location across from hubbell & hudson recently. do not know if the two are related, but the location would be great for a non-brew serving type establishment. on the roxx, maybe?

shenandoah's portofino center may be getting a spring creek bbq location along with the bj's restaurant & brewhouse currently under construction.

alden bridge residents will have a new healthy eatery featuring gluten free menu items, near rico's in the alden bridge shopping center.

lest i forget, kita, the new japanese restaurant at 24 waterway is delicious (and beautiful)!

the woodlands township recently approved a $25K study for a permanent performing arts location in town center.

the waterway marriott is undergoing or about to undergo a multi-million dollar update. the senior living center on the waterway at grogan's mill is topped out....still anxious about the facade. i so hope they don't go "brick"! give me cement, steel, glass or stone please.

  3. walmart at this location will be a big success.....and if it doesn't look like every other walmart, great.

(....and yes, i like to do the clicky ratings buttons without explanation. you can't make me talk! :P some people don't want to get into the mix but want to be a part of it on some level. no need to call them out, it's kinda unfriendly.)

  4. added several historic houston items today. a cousin forwarded several scans of houston places and people recently: pictures include the alabama theater, marvin zindler, 7 eleven, humble oil gas station, blue grass inn/kentucky fried chicken, astroworld, shamrock......thought some of you would enjoy.

  5. I remember Der Weinerschnitzel... I went to the one in Pasadena, on Southmore, in the late 1960's. It was close to the Foley's.

You drove thru a short little tunnel in the A-frame, to the drive-in window to order your hotdog. I always thought the sauerkraut option was bizarre, I was only 6 or so.

For some reason, I remember the soda cups, probably paper "Dixie" cups, white paper wax with those horizontal green chain designs at the top.

As far as the food quality, I can't recall.

the one at southmore and witter is the same one my dad used to take me to. i, too, was around six.

  6. Two new upscale restaurants are soon to open at 20 Waterway Avenue. AM Restaurants, with 12 locations in Mexico, are expanding into the Houston, Dallas, San Antonio markets.

La Guadalupana will feature 200 varieties of tequila, outdoor seating available (Waterway Square level next to Grimaldi's), live music Thursday-Saturday evenings and salsa made at your table, to your specifications. The press release includes "...a wide variety of authentic Mexican dishes.". (Being from southeast Texas, I've heard this before.....El Pollino has a wide variety of authentic Mexican dishes (to some).....doesn't mean I eat there. Will be interested to know if they REALLY mean "authentic". More pork and seafood please!)

Luca & Leonardo Ristorante is Italian with a terrace over looking The Woodlands Waterway and Waterway Square.

Although I'm glad this project (20 Waterway) will be 90% leased, the restaurants sound like typical resort fare that thrive in a tourist environment and offer nothing original. I hope to be pleasantly surprised.

  7. Here's a link that shows all the pictures from the slideshow in one page: http://www.vanityfair.com/culture/features/2010/08/architecture-survey-slideshow-201008?currentPage=all

I've been to four of these places. The picture they use for the HSBC building really doesn't do it justice. Though much of its significance is in how the interior is laid out (and thus VF used an interior photo), it is most visually striking from the outside. And at night. Here's a picture I took for HAIF's sister web site, Chinese Architecture.cn.

More pictures of the HSBC New Headquarters.

It's also interesting that in a list of just 20 buildings, that two are churches. The cross of light is interesting, but I think I've seen that elsewhere. Doesn't Saint Basil's Chapel in Houston do that, as well? Or am I thinking of another building?

  8. I was almost right below you, right next to the pedestrian bridge that goes across the waterway where it feeds into the lake. Yeah, we even saw debris still flaming still.

I'm glad they still went on with the show since they did, what, like two or three test shots.

Also, looks like you got home at a decent time. We parked at the mall it it took about an hour to get home, which is only 5-6 miles.

you were in an awesome location! i'm 1.2 miles from waterway square, but walked to anadarko from the waterway lofts and drove home from there. it took about 40 minutes.

we saw cops get freaked out at the first test shot. they started radioing to see what was going on because the fireworks weren't supposed to start until 9:15. it was alarming to see the police on edge.
