  1. Why would he? Makes no sense. He chose to leave on his own accord, because of a difference of opinion. He's not banned, so there would be no need to come back in disguise. Maybe after several years of dedication to the forum he decided enough was enough, and moved on. Some people do have a life away from HAIF. I know it's hard for a chosen few to realize, but there really is life away from HAIF. There are those that take all of this way too seriously, and get their panties in a wad, and cry and act like people have it out for them, then they go cry to a couple of sympathizers, that give them their ice cream cone and their cop's hat to wear till they stop crying and then send them back home. Dan's doing what Dan wants to do.......get over it, and leave him be.

I too am pulling a Danax. I never was as eloquent, never as insightful, and never had my finger on the pulse of the East End like Danax, but I too am gone. I tried to show the hypocrisy of this ridiculous post that I am quoting and the Editor slapped me down. I enjoyed HAIF while I was on for my brief time, but alas, I was just a Jazz fan who dared to spar with a Rocket, or Laker, or Spur, or whatever. Clearly Mark. F. Barnes is a sacred cow, and though I was respectful, the ref (Editor) decided to play home court advantage and slap me down. I guess because I don't post 2.15 times a day. Trust me, I've taken a lot more abuse on the Rockets thread than I ever gave Mark F. Barnes on one benign post, but somehow the EDITOR deemed it a personal attack.

I take pride that my "What is your favorite music?" thread is still popular. It was a fun forum. But the unspoken rules are ridiculous.

Go Texans, Go Astros, Go Jazz. Peace Out.

(And no, I won't be lurking)

  2. That denial begins at the state level. Way too much emphasis on TAKS and doctoring the dropout formulas to make the state look better than it really is. When the state (and hence, the individual districts) decides that actual education is more important than manipulated statistics, the educational climate will improve. It can be done. The state of North Carolina, through sheer force of will, decided to make education a priority. Now, instead of being known as the birthplace of NASCAR, it is known for its Research Triangle, and several of the nation's best public AND private universities. Texas apparently still prefers to be known for having the most pickups.

And BBQ...there is nothing quite like Carolina BBQ. It's the best I've ever had. And yes, you put cole slaw on your BBQ sandwich in Carolina. So good...

I was born in Virginia, raised in Utah, lived in California, and moved to Houston a few years ago. I love Houston and I'm not leaving before I retire and then I will retire in Texas. But I'm not Texan, I'm Houstonian. There is a difference methinks. Houston is the bomb. And I am fortunate enough to been to most cities in America so I have quite a bit to compare it to.

  3. car cd player - amy winehouse

kitchen - yo yo ma & nat king cole

bedroom - elo (electric light orchestra - zoom), k.d.lang (watershed) & william orbit (strange cargo)

There are definitely some people with eclectic musical tastes on this thread. I'm just not sure how ELO fits into the equation. IMO one of the worst bands of the seventies along with Yes, Moody Blues, and Alan Parsons Project. Digging the Amy Winehouse though...

  4. Isn't that somethin?

Way to go Editor, congrats on the growth of your baby!

Btw, that's a lot of lurkers.

    lurker.jpg

Why yall hiding, come out an play!

PuroAztlan - how do you put images in a post such as the lurker picture you've put in this post? Cheers.

  5. Yes. Its a gang. Its a huge, deadly organization of gay teens who tried really, really hard to come up with the gayest name ever for a gang of street toughs. Spy9. The gang. :ugh:

    Lol! Dude, that's hilarious!

I agree, graffiti gangs should standardize to Arial or Times New Roman, it would greatly increase effectiveness of messaging.

    Lol! This thread is hilarious!

  6. Cool.

Does Amy Winehouse have any radio songs? I don't listen to the radio too much, but I don't think I've heard any of her songs. What's the closest comparison to her? I have no idea what she sounds like.

I think her biggest song in America was probably "Rehab". "They tried to make me go to rehab and I said no, no, no!". She should ignore her lyrics and try rehab but I digress...Her voice is amazing, kind of like an old school, Billie Holiday, Shirley Bassey, Nina Simone kind of voice. Her songs on "Back To Black" are produced to recall the fifties and sixties Motown girl groups vibe. It's kind of an old school soul/r&b vibe. It's just great.

I was going to suggest "The Hold Steady", but I see I don't need to. They are the greatest band touring and recording right now.

Other music I've been digging: R

  7. hey, they've finished pouring almost all the concrete on the bike trail from east DT to Macgregor Bayou. Some transitions are unfinished and you have to make a few hops under 1-45, as well as some of the cross streets, but you can now ride all the way. Did it Sunday, and it was a pleasant look into the backyards of the deep 3rd ward, through TSU, etc. A leisurely but interesting ride. Next time I'll have to stop at Lucky's after.

That sounds great! I will give the trail a try this weekend. My bike rides do usually include an intermission at Lucky's...

  8. ha, did you ride drunk from the bike shop back to Eastwood? No wonder! West End Cycles is the shop on Durham, north of Washington?

The bike shop is a few blocks east of Memorial Park on Blossom. No...I didn't ride it home drunk back to Eastwood. I was actually in Corpus Christi. I took my bike down there, trying to be good and not drinking and driving the company vehicle. So I rode my bicycle to a bar in a very iffy, industrial area. Several beers, a few shots, and one hot bartender later, I decide to ride back to my hotel. And honestly, I haven't really ridden a bike in years. Anyway, I am glad I had a helmet on because I hit the ground three times, one time HARD! My elbow is still messed up...oh well. Lesson learned. I survived the bike ride and didn't get robbed and I won't be doing that again anytime soon. But if you see a guy leaving Lucky's Pub and getting on a bicycle, please don't drive too close to me!

  9. A lot of people, especially those who really know or think they know music have a hard time accepting John at first. But he's much more than bad hair and a goofy face. He's one of the more insightful people (not just artist/celebrity) you'll hear speak or write. He knows how to make the lyrics sound like the music and vice versa.

I wouldn't discount his older stuff either just cuz it sounds like 'pop.' With the exception of your body is a wonderland, it's just as skillfull.

I would say Sara is worth a try but be careful when listening to Brad. He's got good stuff, you just gotta avoid the fluff songs.

    You got any suggestions?

Thanks for the head's up on Mayer, Sara, and Brad. I think my favorite band I've discovered last year is a Minneapolis band, now based in Brooklyn, called "The Hold Steady". I think one of the greatest quotes I read in a rock mag about them is they are a band that doesn't realize that punkers and classic rockers are supposed to hang out in different bars. They are a cross between Bruce Springsteen, The Replacements, and Husker Du. Truly exceptional lyrics. The singer's deliver is a bit of an acquired taste. But man, what an incredible band. They have a few albums out but I would start with their latest "Boys and Girls in America". Also, if you are into itunes, download the song "Your Little Hoodrat Friend" from their "Separation Sunday" album. Just a great, bar band. And I mean that in the best way. Their new album is coming out in July.

And I have to say, probably my absolute favorite album of the last year or so is Amy Winehouse, "Back to Black". I know she is an absolute mess of a person and will probably never release another great album if she doesn't get cleaned up, but "Back to Black" is absolute soulful bliss. It's simply a classic.

  10. Haven't seen that one, but they are busy at my neighbor's near 8th and Arlington.

In other Heights news, my hibiscuses (hibisci?) and bougainvillea are loving this weather.

I finally tried Dry Creek, and my sandwich (the Creek Philly) was yummy and to be recommended.

    Camphouse still looks closed.

Sorry, that's the best I could do.

I am an East Ender but recently on recommendation purchased a commuter bicycle from West End Bicycles. I believe that is near or in the Heights. Great bike shop. Very knowledgeable staff. They should have warned me, however, about getting intoxicated and riding the bike...Trust me kids, bad idea!

  11. Go ahead and laugh, but these are mine.

John Mayer anything. He's a musical and lyrical genius. Lately it's been Sara Bareilles. She has a great voice. The lyrics aren't as great, but they hold their own.

Not all, but some of Brad Paisley's stuff is really good. Some are really stupid but others just have great lyrics. The ones I like are very unique and not cliche at all, yet they're still relevant. He has a good voice, too.

I am not familiar with Sara Bareilles and don't listen to a lot of newer country such as Brad Paisley (dude can play that guitar though!). But I do own Continuum by John Mayer. I will admit it, I can be a bit of a music snob and didn't want to initially like John Mayer because of the whole "Body is a Wonderland" thing. But Continuum is just a great album. John Mayer is very talented and seems to be really maturing as an artist. Great music to play from the computer during my work day or a lazy Sunday morning...

  12. We're all active members here for different reasons. But it seems pretty much most of us have one thing in common, we love cranes and what they represent.

So my open ended question in addition to my poll is this. Why aren't you (if you're not already) working in real estate, construction etc?

Why did you choose your current industry over real estate development etc?

I love my job. Without getting too specific, I am a outside salesman and I sell into the Construction, Oil & Gas, and, and Industrial Fields. I am on construction sites, petrochem sites, and Industrial worksites all the time. I home office and my company and boss are located in another state. :) My boss is totally cool and my company is an industry leader within it's respective field. It's all good! :)

  13. I will be so happy if we win tomorrow for the sweep. (and it might just put us at 500).

Went to the game last night. Outstanding bats! I missed the big 5th inning today, didn't turn on the tv until the 7th, but it looks like we did the same thing all over again. Valverde and Wright continue to impress.

I was at the game Sunday. Great seats. Excellent win. But MAN! Is Chris Sampson not the most painfully slow pitcher? If he has to be that slow at least he could be...oh...I don't know...GOOD?!? But not only is he as slow as molasses. He sucks too.

Great Bullpen work. Great Homer Hunter!

  14. The DMN had an article about a huge new sports complex being put up on Stemmons Freeway at Viceroy. Looks like it will have 20 indoor soccer, volleyball, and tennis courts plus shops, restaurants, and hundreds of apartments. The article says it's being targeted at Hispanics and construction should start this year.

"Massive new sports complex for Whites".

I wonder how that thread would go over? Why wouldn't the massive new sports complex be for all people? Why must it be marketed to a particular ethnicity? Just curious. I am not blowing a gasket, I don't have my panties in a wad. I'm just curious how the headline "Massive new sports complex for Whites" would go over. Just a thought...

  15. Well your original prediction came true...you should not have modified it so many times...

Congrats to Utah on a good series that they really won the first two games in Houston...now it will get really tough against the Lakers. They (Jazz) are going to have to play better than they did the last few games against Houston to win that series, but I dont think you guys are out of it if you drop the first two in LA as long as you figure out something that works defensively for you in Utah. I have heard many say Lakers in seven...I say Lakers in Six. Can't wait for Lakers-Hornets if it comes to pass...my dream scenario is Kobe getting the MVP then Chris Paul and Co. schooling LA a la Hakeem v. Robinson.

and one last note...I hope you don't really believe that any Rockets Champ should come with anything close to an asterisk. Jordan didn't play in 93-94 because he was retired. There is NO precedent in sports history to say any Champ in any league gets an asterisk after the best player in an era retires. Should every series winner get an asterisk after Babe left the game...how many years after? Also, I could say that Hakeem in 93-94 may have been better than MJ that year, especially if MJ's heart wasn't in it and he was going through a lot of off the court turmoil. And what about the 94-95 Championship where Jordan played 19 regular season games and the Playoffs? They had no answer for Shaq and Penny, but Hakeem did. The Rockets were the best team in the league for two full seasons with the most dominant player in the era at the center position...no asterisk needed.

Just playin' with the asterisk. Those were great Rockets teams. Redscare just brings out the worst in me and I like to taunt him. :D The Jazz are going to have a difficult time with the Lakers, but we'll see how it plays out. It won't help if Kobe gets to the line as many times as he did yesterday. We need to steal this next one in LA... I would love to see the Hornets knock off the Spurs. Wouldn't that be a nice, symbolic, changing of the guard? Chris Paul is amazing...

  16. The Texans, as unglorious as they have been, beat out your lack of Utah team any day of the week. And football is king, take your little basketball victory and go high five someone.

I'm a seaon ticket holder to the Texans. I love the Texans. I was just referring to a post that Red Scare made on the Texans thread...I fully support the Texans and the Astros.

Hey, it is not a big deal since Rockets would'nt have won it this year anyway or any of those years in 2000. It hurts worst when you make it to back-to-back finals and get beaten in the last few seconds of the finals... :P

So true...Okay folks...Congrats to the Rockets on a great season. They will be much tougher next year. I am off to go watch the Astros at Minute Maid (hopefully, the roof will be open) and then I will be coming home to watch my Tivo Jazz/Lakers game.

    Ciao! :)

  17. And championships NEVER won in any era get no asterisk.

So, if Utah does not hang banners for 1st round victories, what DO they hang them for? It sure aint for championships.

When are you going to school me on history on the Texans thread? Cat got ur tongue? I can't wait to hear why my history is revisionist...

    **Clutch City :P

  18. Is that so? Just a reminder to anyone that the first 3 championships from Bulls came when they were 1-5 against the Rockets during those 3 yrs. So that means the Bulls only have 3 titles, not six...or to be kind, let's say the Bulls 6 titles come with an asterisk for the first 3.

** Try to get out of the first round in the 2000's.

    :P
