  1. The New England Patriots used to be the Boston Patriots. And the California Angels used to be the Los Angeles Angels. So what? And expenditures. Taxpayers in Harris County paid for our new stadiums. If tax payers in Ft. Bend, Montgomery or Brazoria counties were willing to foot those bills I'd be thrilled. The way I see it -- Dallas gets a football stadium and a Tarrant County city ends up paying for a large part of it. Seems like a good deal to me.
  2. Regarding the Texas Tornado -- Originally called the Thriller and was operated as a traveling coaster throughout Germany. Built in 1986. Named Taz's Texas Tornado when it opened at Astroworld in 1998. Renamed to Texas Tornado for the 1999 season. Closed in 2001 and 2002 due to issues with the restraints.
  3. And what about the Patriots? They not only don't play in their city (Boston), they don't even identify with their STATE. The New England Patriots play in Foxboro, Mass. Let's also not forget about the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim -- playing a full county removed from their home city. There are more. Like Mark says, this is a silly argument. Irving is to Dallas what Bellaire is to Houston, in terms of distance from downtown. Even when they move to Arlington, it'll be akin to a drive out to Stafford for a game. what's the big deal?
  4. I can't believe I forgot Power Tools and Catayl Hyuk...I can't spell it either.
  5. I share in your excitement and do consider Lee and Williams huge additions to our team. Some reality is in order, though -- Backe may not be healthy for the upcoming season. The kid has heart, though. Trainers will most likely have to physically restrain him to keep him on the DL. He'll need to pace himself. Pettitte may not be himself, either. I think the signing of Lee is a clear indication that the Astros want Clemens for another season and are willing to pay for some run support. Woody's signing may be an indication that Pettitte might not be 100%. Is Woody our #2? The biggest benefactor will be Berkman, batting in front of Lee. Look for Puma to crack 50 HRs and some ungodly RBI number this season. He will see lots of pitches to hit. I think about a .330-.340 BA should be in order, too. That is awesome. Bottom line -- I think the Astros are overpaying for Lee and getting Woody a couple of years too late, but they really didn't have a choice. Both are huge. To go out and write big checks like the Astros did at this point, says, "we're serious, fans." It says, "we'd like Roger back for one more," too. Which, of course, says, "we're serious, fans." It also says, "we'd like to make Puma a legitimate superstar." Which, of course, says, "we're serious, fans." I think they're serious. I like it.
  6. Emo's, Some, NRG, Decadance(Clubland), Rich's and VERY RARELY Lizard Lounge or 6400. I did go to Hippo (the old 6400) a few times when I was underage. I met a waitress at Hippo when I was 18 and new in town. My girlfriend, who moved here with me had gotten cold feet and moved back home for the holidays. I went to Hippo to drown my sorrows and ended up chatting up a really good looking waitress who invited me to their Christmas party. Open bar -- employees and guests only -- good time. I made out with the waitress all night. Didn't close, though. Never saw her again after. Sorrows were drowned, though.
  7. Nah .. just in general. Lots of people play devil's advocate here from time to time and are crucified for it. I don't really get it. There's a gang mentality here sometimes that won't even allow anyone to ask a question if it seems to go against a "pro-Houston" line of thought. Many times, the question is just meant to generate discussion.
  8. There's no harm in asking the question. I'm constantly amazed at the inability of this forum to work through a dissenting opinion, or even to entertain a question to the established majority. One answer to this question is the fact that sprawl has splintered the city and it's beginning to function more like disparate towns than the fourth largest city in the country. The redevelopment of Downtown is not really intended to make a tiny Manhattan. Instead, I believe it's intended to foster density through creation of a real city center. Traffic patterns, visitor destinations, employment, entertainment and shopping will all one day be centralized, allowing the growth patterns to radiate out from the center again. We'll also continue the trend of repopulating the dead zones inside the Loop and the Beltway. As density builds, the "satellite cities" and neighborhoods will begin to thrive. What I think we'll end up with is more of an LA or London model than a NY one. I think that would work quite well here in Houston.
  9. Never has someone so succinctly expressed my feelings about this game. Good post.
  10. Mapquest directions to the airport: Travel east on South Braeswood to the West Loop South and turn north. Exit due east onto the Southwest Freeway, following it until it turns to the north, becoming the Eastex Freeway. Exit due west on North Sam Houston Parkway East to JFK Blvd. Turn north.
  11. I was in there the night before Spy opened, with all the lights on, testing the sound system with a friend-of-a-friend who DJed there, named Curtis. I think he went on to be a part owner, too, though I'm not sure if he ever got caught up in all the X stuff. Back then, I remember thinking the same thing you did -- finally, a really ambitious club design. I think Rich's may have been the only club that had more of a "Manhattan" feel to it at that time. That kind of ambition isn't as rare anymore. Nowadays, everybody sinks 6-figures into building out a club. Back then, Spy was really something in this market.
  12. I echo your takes on the 12 Spot -- including not going as often as I should have. Honestly, I can't believe they lasted this long. Often they were DEAD at prime hours...which, of course, made them appealing to me.
  13. Holy crap -- he's in San Antonio?! I like visiting SA from time to time, but it's no place anyone with any appreciation for things urban would ever want to live. That city's about 30 years behind the curve in terms of urban development -- that's part of its charm. To dish on Houston's urban environment from San Antonio is really lame. tierwestah is officially discredited.
  14. I went a few times in roughly that timeframe, too. It was just starting to be Asian then. I didn't have any problem with it going Asian -- the Asian gangs and thugs that started showing up were a different matter.
  15. Houston Pavillions will neither make nor break this city. I hope it happens. If it doesn't, I suppose I'll have to eat, drink and bowl somewhere else. Dallas is okay. I couldn't care less about Atlanta. I like Houston best of these three. I'll stay here, with or without HP.
  16. I hope it closed. That place had gone Asian gang and thug. It had been boring since it was Spy, though, so I guess even gangster money was welcome. The Spy management was involved in a big drug sting that involved closing the club several years ago, I believe. I can't really remember the facts... I think, back in the 80s and early 90s, this was actually a topless bar. I'm not sure about that, either, though. Bottom line -- it will be something else soon...and again, and again.
  17. Finally somebody gets me. I was beginning to think this whole place was populated by people who didn't get when someone was just having a little fun with them. There are far too many overeactions played out on this board. Douchebag.
  18. I was just referencing the "homophobic landscapers" thread, where someone came on out of the blue and stated the obvious. A poster referred to her as a "douche bag" and it caused a stir. Sorry to cause any confusion. I was just trying to be funny. Montrose, I know you probably think I'm the king of all douche bags, So I will extend to you the same apology I have given to everyone else here I've offended in the past. I have already on several occasions attempted to approach you with kindness, to no avail. I have overlooked your very rude posts to me in the past and have avoided antagonizing you in any way for probably over a year now. Why you would feel the need to chime in with something like this is strange, but not unexpected, I guess. Thanks for unneccessarily stirring up some bad feelings.
  19. The hotel's up for sale, too. The whole thing may not make it. Too bad. It was iconic (pun intended) for the revitalization of downtown.
  20. Another consideration is 288, itself. 288 is a freeway mainly to serve truck traffic for Port Freeport in Southern Brazoria County. If no giant port were there, 288 would be a 2-lane highway and would never have allowed Pearland to grow like it has. 288 also runs through protected wetlands and is prohibited from developing feeder roads and commercial developments directly adjacent to it. Witness the weird developments just off the highway at 518 as proof of this. Because of this, the linear sprawl cannot gain steam here as elsewhere.
  21. I don't think anyone realistically thinks the Texans are a playoff team this season. Even if they could put together an amazing run and win 6-7 games, they'd be fodder for the class of the NFL. However, in light of today's performance, it is safe to say that things aren't nearly as dire as you thought, huh? The team is rebuilding -- or more accurately stated, BUILDING. It doesn't happen overnight. One other thing -- I know for a fact The Texans organization is putting their highest priority on the fan experience. They are realistic and know that they don't have a legitimate contender, but rather the base for a future contender. Kubiak is a big part of this. Now, of course winning is a part of the fan experience, but even in a losing season, as they are probably going to have, the fan experience and entertainment value of Texans' football is still great. Personally, I enjoy baseball over anything else, for the pure value of watching the game. I consider the NBA unwatchable. Football, however is great entertainment. From tailgating to the fan camraderie in the game, to the great facility we have, fans attending the game GET THEIR MONEY'S WORTH. Imagine how it will be when they start winning.
  22. Don't sell yourself short. That is an amazing photo. I've never seen that angle before. It almost doesn't look like Houston. Amazing photo skills. Can't wait for the other one.
