  1. The main problem with Dallas St. is the bldg service docks for HP/HOB and the office tower (4xx? Fannin) across the street. I'm not one to judge (b/c I do this all the time) but walking by dumpsters and the "retail pedestrian experience" seem a tad at odds with the vision expressed here.

Not to mention the smell near there is extremely foul all the time. I think there is a grease trap run off or something right there.

  2. Tried it once. Nothing great. The close by Xuco Xucana is way better so I won't miss them.

XX use to be El Patio right? Yes, the food there is amazing since they actually have an amazing chef now. Probably one of the best Tex Mex meals I have ever had (the prices reflect that as well, but worth it), and the drinks are still the same amazing El Patio Margaritas I was use to (they will kick your arse, so take em slow)

  3. Never ate there (there are too many better places to eat Tex Mex in our city) but in the evenings I would drive past and almost always saw people eating on the patio (this was before summer mind you). I go to Bar Munich next door often on Fridays and Saturdays and I would walk by Ruby's and there were always people inside.

    Hmm, I wonder what happened.

  4. Nah, it will tank as people just sit on the couches and read the books for free and look important while they suck up the free wi-fi on their laptops.

My book buying habits have changed considerably in the last two years. Almost everything I buy goes to my kindle, but things that I use for research I keep in actual book form and keep on my shelf.

Unless they change it up the business model, the popular bookstores are going to go the way of blockbuster.

    edit: damn auto correct

This is correct. I think the only book stores left that we will see in the future will be the ones that sell the rare, expensive books.

  5. I think this had more to do with the post-Four Season happy hour office trysts more than anything else.

lol, that would have been awesome, but it was in the middle of the day. This one lady had a massive yellow dress (it almost looked like curtains) that she would wash and dry out on the lawn once a week during the lunch hour.

  6. When I worked in 5 Houston Center everyone in our office referred to that park as "Rat Park". Every time you would walk by, you could see huge rats in the bushes. They would sometimes run after you.

This park was used mainly as an area for homeless people to lay their clothes out to dry during the day. Most days I would look out my window and see a dozen or more pieces of clothing scattered throughout the lawn area of the park.

  7. It's gone. And while it's sad to see a business go, they were running it really wrong.

How so? just curious. When they first opened they were really good, but the food started to go downhill somewhat. I do remember going there when they sold produce, but stopped :(

  8. Relax.

The Former YMCA will be a green space.

The former Sheraton will be a park and main entry way for Total Plaza w/ parking underground.

This is just an article saying they are doing feasibility studies. We do them all the time at my firm and most of the time nothing substantial happens except more studies are exacted.

The former Y will be a temporary green space, but Chevron plans to build another building there, still better than a parking lot.

  9. I was driving past the Shops at Houston and noticed that where Monsoon used to be on the corner of san jacinto and lamar st. there is a sign that says Texas Sports Bar & Grill coming soon. Its nice to see that empty space finally be put back to use again, there is always lots of people walking around there during the day.

Oh nice, I did see them working inside last week, I was wondering what they were going to do with that place. Monsoon was really good for the first six months it was open, it just went downhill from there. Twisted Fork before Monsoon was really good, but they closed because they felt like they were being bullied from Crescent regarding the rent and refused to renew their lease. I hope Crescent learns from their mistakes with the Park Shops, I mean "Houston Center". They drove the really nice stores away :( Now it is just a cafeteria essentially.

  10. I went Saturday night before going to our regular spots. It was pretty good, the crowd was pretty good too, not too many people, not too few. They did say that they are still working on a menu (German Food) that will be coming soon.

They have five or six german beers on tap. Two of them were pretty good, one was a wheaty thicker version and the other was considered a lite version. You can also get any draft beer in a 32 ounce glass mug (lol). mmmm

  11. I vote for the super block in Midtown or where the old YMCA now sits.

Oh, I am all for the super block in Midtown, that would be awesome. But I hate to drive to go to a park, does anyeone know if you can bring small dogs onto the Metrorail?

I am pretty sure the old downtown Y location will be a building eventually for Chevron, they are busting at the seams already.

  12. They have a crane up now and most all of the windows are out. The lower concrete floors are exposed through the hole they punched in it to install the tower crane.

It will be interesting to see how fast it comes down.

I hope very fast... it is causing a nightmare on Louisiana street (one of the main roads in downtown)

  13. Byrd's is no bueno as a grocer. They replaced their fresh produce with kitty litter and cleaning supplies. All they have left as groceries go is way overpriced pasta, and Lola's Coffee for $5 per pound more than it costs to get it from the Lola's plant ten blocks away. I do like some of their food, but the price is kinda high.

    They don't sell produce anymore?

  14. Sorry, didn't mean to cause a war here. I just really like where I live and it rather bothered me when the manager was insulted, because she is very sweet. Just fyi, this complex is very small and we know everyone who lives here and your cousin is living in a "glass house" and the fact that you say she hates it here explains her letting her dog piss in the elevator all the time. I don't think the owners really care about this at all, but us tenants do, we all know it's your black dog so please stop... it's rude.

Um, Yeah, before you try and call me out: Two things you need to know...

1)I do not live here, I live at Commerce Tower

2)My cousin doesn't own a dog, she has never owned a dog or a cat, she is allergic to them...

(Added this later, after thinking about it):

As for the person letting their dog defecate in the elevator, GROSS!! I hope they have a camera in the elevator that catches the person. The building should bill them for the cleaning cost.

  15. I'm inclined to believe what he says. You mean to tell me that packages get returned to sender if you're not there to personally sign for them? I seriously doubt that.

They don't get returned the first, second or third time, but they will send them back if they can't get anyone to receive them. I know a few times packages have come when our concierge was on a break and FED Ex, or whomever would come back the next day. Usually though there is a set time these delivery companies come so someone is always there. But as for this building, I do not know.

  16. That is interesting, cable didn't cost anything to install for my unit. I've never had a problem receiving any of my packages, as the manager receives them in her office. I must say I am very content living here, and in my opinion, it has one of the best views of downtown in the city. I usually have a lot of complaints with places I have lived, but this one has been a great experience. Oh and the "friend" you spoke of... I am very glad that drama-queen has left the building.

Wow seriously... I find this "Haifer" to be hilarious. Don't think for one second anyone believes you. I mean come on, you must work for the lofts. The fact that you are referring to the "drama-queen" (which is funny if I may say so, because he is one) tells me for sure that you do in fact work for the company that "manages" (for a lack of a better word) this building.

  17. Does anyone know who owns this building?

My cousin (who is more like a sister to me) and her boyfriend have lived here for a couple of months and are trying to contact the owners with regards to numerous issues.

One of my friends has already moved out (this week actually) of this place because it is so bad.

    - The management is a joke. They have the leasing agent serving as the property manager and she is awful, very nice but not very smart.

    - Parking (rather lack of parking)

    - Cable installation for their apartment was $300 (the building should have had these apartments cable ready)

    - The doorbox doesn't work so if you have a package or delivery coming you have to wait out in the lobby to get your delivery or package as there is also no door man

    - The only "amenities" this place has is a "gym" with old equipment (I really wouldn't call it a gym as there is no weights or weight system, it is more of a cardio room) and a pool table.
