  1. I'd rather drive to the chocolate bar... we checked it out two weekends ago and weren't impressed...that doesn't mean you guys won't like it...we just didn't care for it. We tasted some gelato, but the gelato at Nundini's is FAR better, and they are in the hood. We also purchased 4 different truffles and they resembled boxed chocolates rather than truffles I think this place has a lot of potential, they just need more variety to fill up their large display case. I want to go back in a few months to see if they've improved. Even if it's not the best place, I still appreciate new, locally owned alternatives to the bigger stores...that alone would make me support it!
  2. Did anyone mention the Clobber Line commercial(Lawrence Marshall??)? UGH! My least favorite commercials are the Lenar Homes radio commercials-hands down! "EVERYBODY! Everything's included by Lenar, e-i-e-i-oooooooooooooo." The tone of the kids voices when they say "ooooooooo" is just wrong! Maybe that's not considered local....but I feel much better getting that off my chest
  3. check the schedule, but there's no question that the Mucky Duck is a great place to see/hear live music! Hickory Hollow (on Heights) has great country/bluegrass music every Friday & Saturday. Continental and Dan Electro's might appeal to you as well.
  4. yes, it's true...another Mexican/Cuban joint It's called Taco Diana (I think) and will serve traditional Mex (e.g. tacos, tortas, etc.)
  5. I agree with you heights_yankee... Even reading this revived thread, I start to feel a pit in my stomach over the Ashland House demolition. I personally never read your posts and thought "hey, she's putting words in my mouth." I felt greif over the demolition, and I'm sure others felt that pain equally, if not more so. I felt the entire situation was handled incorrectly. I don't care if the establishment uses "like architecture," or a bloody neon ferris wheel, it doesn't change the way I feel about what happened. Maybe some feel that if you make it a victorian theme restaurant, that it in some way honors the neighborhood. I feel the act of tearing down Ashland's was a completely dishonorable act in itself. If the restaurant is successful, more power to them, but I personally will not feel compelled to try it out.
  6. We priced many termite vendors and went with a great, local company called End-O-Pest
  7. Termites are an issue in the Heights for multiple reasons: age of home, pier & beam, old trees, humid/wet conditions, etc. etc. If I had to guess, over 90% of homes in the Heights have had termites, or will have termites. We tented our house before we moved in 5 years ago. The termite guy mentioned that in our area, it's wise to have your house inspected once every year or two. In our case, we had the house tented and then noticed about three years after that we had termites on the south east side of our house. Now we have the underground "bait" systems which after the major treamtment, is suitable for our condtion...and is apx. 1/2 the cost of the tenting. They are green compartments that they place all along the perimeter of the house underground. The termite inspector then comes for a visit every few months to add more bait, inspect the progress, etc., etc. It's important to learn about the differences in the two main types of termites that most home owners encounter...that will determine the speed in which you should act upon treatment. Most forms of treatment run between 1-3K, depending on what your situation requires. Hopefully others will have some additional info on the topic. Good luck!
  8. that's too bad. A bike race/ride is great...but it's no festival
  9. does anyone know the reason why there will not be a 2006 Heights Festival (first weekend of October)? I have seen numerous notes that it will not be held this year and thought someone may have some insight.
  10. I just had to get clarification on some of this HHA/Starbucks smack down that's been going around b/c I wasn't entirely sure the accusations some have made on this board to be accurate. I have personally talked to a few HHA members in the past and they have mentioned that they support a Starbucks going in on 19th...so why has the HHA gotten such a bad wrap for running Starbucks out of the Heights? It's true, rumors can spread as quick as a virus. The truth about the HHA & Starbucks I promise this is from as reliable source as they come!!! The HHA's battle w/ Starbucks is a total fabrication, but somewhere it has been turned into "fact" through numerous rumors. This may be one of the sources of such rumors: There was a building owner that wanted a Starbucks in his building on 19th, the building was designed for a coffee shop, and interestingly enough, it's still vacant. This same building owner wanted another commercial space built on top of another space on the east. Unfortunately the property is deed restricted to a non commercial space from the early 1900's, over 60 years before the HHA was formed. A city attorney (not the HHA) said that in no way could he get around the deed restriction. Although the HHA did not support the variance of the deed, it was not the HHA that enforced this. However, the building owner was upset and placed blame on the HHA. A former president of the HHA personally talked to the owners of the 19th street building and the Starbucks corporate offices. Both parties admitted they never had a deal nor had they began to negotiate a deal. HHA actually requested that Starbucks come to the Heights and they said the demographics were not right at that time. Starbucks believed that 19th street was not a heavily trafficked area and would not support their business model. Also, look at smaller mom and pop shops that fail b/c of lack of support. Although a totally different scenario, as a commercial investor, it's something to keep in consideration. The HHA was able to get Starbucks as a sponsor at the fun run a few years back and they handed out free samples during the race activities.
  11. Well I never post, I'm a lurker through and through...but... A family friend is one of those responsible for scoping out new HEB locations. I keep nagging him to open up an HEB or Central Market in the old pantry spot (or anywhere in the Heights), but there's a reason they moved....real estate is just too much. I just can't imagine CM not doing enough business in the Heights to justify a store, but I suppose it makes sense. I used to shop at Albertsons back in the day...now I'm forced to do my local shopping at Kroger, sigh.... I would really like to see something done (sooner rather than later) to the Pantry building....
  12. Well, Heather does know all the yummy restaurants-LMAO...sorry, wrong board.
