  3. Texas has an financial issue for retirees. With no income tax, the equivalent tax on everyday people is property tax. Neighboring states with income tax, Income tax+property tax are very similar to texas property tax. So when you retire in Texas, you tax rate does not go down with your reduced income. Part of cost of living calculations.
  4. Take classes or even online classes. On iTunes and roku you can find college classes on programming. You can watch the lectures then do the assignments. They usually have a class website that you can get some of the supporting information. Stanford for one has classes you can see from entry level to more advanced. You won't have access to the professor/instructor/GA but it's a big help. Many universities have them available online.
  5. Oilman's Prayer Lord please let there be one more oil boom, I promise not to piss this one away.
  6. I always like it best coming to Houston in early 80's I always wondered if the owners didn't "play ball" and curry favor (bribes?) the right people. At Beltway 8 and I-10 traditionally would be an ideal location. But got blocked by the two big construction projects. Made it easy to see from highways but difficult to get to. About the time I came I-10 was expanding from 2 lanes each side to 3 lanes each side. Then the Beltway tollroad was built on what was a 2 lane road in the middle of a green space. Both projects made access much much worse. They would of had a hard time making the mall more inaccessable. Memorial City down the road had two very useful exits from I-10 going east and 1 or 2 going west. It blossomed while Town and Country was starved. The closest exit to Town and Country going east was so far down you either had to go to Gessner (where Memorial City was and loop back or fight your way over and go through the neighborhood. A bunch of turns.
  7. Randall's/Tom Thumb was amusing to watch. Randall's (owned on Onsteads) bought the Dallas based Tom Thumb. Onstead's were mormons and kept alcohol out for religious reasons. The most sought after rental at a shopping center that got a new Randall's was next door for a liquor store. After they bought Tom Thumb after a few months they removed the beer and wine half aisle from stores. Really pissed off the customers and made the Dallas news. At least one (seem to remember more than one) radio personalities in Dallas rabble roused to boycott Randall's. Not only did overall sales drop but profitability dropped. After the bruhaha they looked at the accounting numbers and found the 1/2 aisle of beer and wine generated as much profit as the rest of the store. Beer and wine aisle reappeared. Shortly thereafter all the Randall's got a beer and wine aisle.
