  1. The demolition of the Sylvan Beach Pavilion is officially opposed by the National Trust for Historic Preservation - Southwest Regional Office, Preservation Texas, Texas Historical Commission, and Texas Dance Hall Preservation. We've all sent letters supporting the preservation of the pavilion to Mayor Porter and Commissioner Garcia. In addition, a group of LaPorte residents has a petition going and is rallying the community around the pavilon. You can see what they're up to at www.savethepavilion.org. Check out the Links section for a PDF describing the damage to the pavilion from Hurricane Carla, as well as an aerial photo showing that the second floor ballroom was above the flood water. I plan to speak at the April 14 LaPorte City Council meeting in support of the pavilion. If you're interested, come on out! Steph McDougal steph@texasdancehall.org
  2. FYI, Texas dance halls were named to Preservation Texas' Most Endangered Historic Properties last month, and Texas Dance Hall Preservation is on the case! We'd like to see the historic pavilion incorporated into the hotel development project. If you're interested in lending your support, please email me at "steph at texasdancehall.org". Thanks! Steph McDougal
  3. Does anybody have any interior photos of the Alabama Theater, from before it became the Bookstop? I'm curious what the balcony area used to contain ... where was the projection booth? Was there a concession stand up there? I'm also looking for any information about the Theater between when it was built in the 1930s and when it was converted. Thanks! Steph slideyfloor @ yahoo.com
