  1. this sounds great and all with the grocery store at the bottom floor but i was driving by there the other day, does it seem like there's enough space down there to contain a grocery store? It looked a little small to me IMO.
  2. Have any of you guys tried the new Philly Cheesteak place that just opened up on Scott and Alabama in third ward (Right across from U of H). Know some of yall might think yall too good for the hood! (just jokin') The owner of this shop moved down here from Philladelphia because his son goes to U of H and his cheesteak's are just as good, if not better than Firehouse Philly's were.
  3. yeah i'd like to see subway in Houston. i'M A LITTLE JEALOUS how our neighbors to the north already have one while we seem to be stuck in yesteryear with old- fashioned buses that pollute the air and a short little light train that only runs 7 minutes from DT to Relaint. I hope the next rail extentions are planned out a lot better than the first one.
  4. i called the number listed on the website and asked the lady who answered the phone if the project was really going to happen. She almost bit my head off and said, "Off course it'll happen!" She said there's going to be plenty of variety including House of Blues. Estimated time for completion: 2007. I'm just like the next guy, I hope this isn't one of many other Houston projects that fall through but let's hope for the best!
  5. Metro Matt, you are so right. If Houston was able to have corporate names and logos on top, it would help Houston's night skyline and it wouldn't look so plain and generic. And yes, shame on the Exxon Mobil building for changing their lights at top back to white. I was very disappointed when i first noticed them changing back several weeks ago. Now that building sticks out like a sore thumb at night.
  6. just to let you guys know, i managed to get 50 signatures on the petition for better lighting allready. Do you guys think that might be enough?
  7. In my opinion, both to Professional Hornblower and tierwestah, you were both letting your egos get the best of you and both of you all but my respects go to PH for conceding. Maybe time for both of you guys to call a truse. Professional Hornblower, let the man have his own opinion, he already gave his reason as to why he felt the way he did about uptown. And i think Tierwestah was taking it as if you're trying to belittle his knowledge of Architecture/Urban Planning simply because you don't agree with him. Tierwestah, try to be a little more civil on this board. I'm wondering if you're some thug or something. Learn to handle it better when someone challenges your opinion. I somewhat agree with both of you though. Uptown activity level seems higher and more happening than downtown's dead atmosphere. This is quite deceiving though because uptown is more active at street level, but downtown has the tunnels and i've noticed are crowded during the weekday. The buildings in Uptown seem a lot newer and simply have a nicer look. I do agree with downtown's potential level though. It has more room to grow and become something even better than what Uptown is now. I think the way downtown is starting to plan itself is more in the step to the right direction for urban environment than uptown, plus as PH said, there's more diverse neighborhoods around downtown.
  8. I'm not sure what you meant by that comment but by the way it sounds, i'm quite offended!
  9. i like the rockets and all. but sometimes they get me mad enough to not want to watch them again. They could be 15 points ahead in the game and all of a sudden lose momentum and allow the opposing team to catch up and win the game. The Rockets should never go out like that! I don't care if it is in the regular season.
  10. so what now? Houston's not going to have a greyhound station downtown anymore?
  11. hopefully the above website will be of some help on how to go about getting the petition to city council and what the guidelines and procedures are. I know i'm going to mail a copy of the petition to the address listed. I'm working on getting a list of signatures of my own though. I love to help in political projects like these.
  12. ALRIGHT FOLKS! Check out this website i found. You all might already know about it but check it out anyway, it's pretty neat http://www.houstontx.gov/council/about.html
  13. Hellraiser, i have been down here in Houston for almost a year now attending college and i can see how this place after beingere for so long might start to get one annoyed in frustrated. My biggest problem is the heat, humidity and air. But honestly, i can say that anywhere you go, you're going to run into something about it you don't like. This board is a board to where you can speak your mind but i guess people on this board want to look at the fact that Houston is slowly but surely improving. It won't be long before it actually gets well known as a major destination place. It's really not that much different from places like Atlanta, Denver, Dallas, or any other of these large cities. I wish Houston would kind of glitz itself up a little more esp in downtown at night. If they did that at both street level and on the skyscrapers, i bet they'll see a more surge of retail. I know because storeowners want to be in a place where it seems lively and somewhere they'll be noticed. Not having any lit up signs definitely runs the risk of them being overseen. I also wish Houston would stop with the freeway expansion and start using that money and putting it toward lightrail expansions and improvements. Houston already has a sprawl problem like Atlanta. I guess that is the thing that frustrates me the most here.
  14. Does anyone know why 7 eleven and Albertsons left Houston? I was just visiting Dallas and noticed that Albertsons grocery stores and 7 Elevens still exist up there. I am aware 7 Eleven's headquarters are still up there but anyone have any ideas as to why these two stores chose to remain in Dallas and Austin but not Texas's largest city? Just wonderin'
  15. absolutely love it. But why does it seem like downtown Houston is the only city that worries so much about a light bill? I mean, aren't most of these multi-million dollar corporations? Can't they afford it? Seriously.
  16. You know who's city's skyline does a good job in lighting without being too gaudy or flashy? Denver Colorado. If Houston MUST be laid back, maybe it needs to try more relaxing colors in the skyline. The Continental Tower, Wells Fargo are pretty relaxing and now the Exxon Mobil now that it's using the blue lights on top now. I definitely agree with you on this one about how christmas lighting can ruining the festive feel for christmas time year round. IT also cheapens the skyline at night. I just say if you don't want to do the lighting technique right, don't do it at all.
  17. let's just hope the Houston Pavilion projects don't follow in the same footsteps as our beloved Shamrock!
  18. My bad i didn't mean for it to come out like that. If that came across as offensive, i apologize. But on the other hand, I thought this was your project because you are the one with all the access to the files and numerous signatures, but i would love to help so let's all GET THIS THING OUT.
  19. I think that is a great idea and i think i remember this petition because i think i even signed it on the old forum. C2H (aka ComingtoHouston) and Large TX. Get this thing out! I think there could use a sligh tweak/update to the petition though. Isn't the Chevron Tower now called the Fulbright tower? Just wonderin'
  20. great now enough with the drawings let's get the darn thing built already!!!
  21. Yes. very sad story. They may as well as given her a lethal injection rather than starve her to death
  22. See. i don't like that Chevron building at night. I really think that this building could make more of a statement at night than what it does. Rather than having the white striped christmas lights on the building, why not add some nice spotlights on top? I mean that last pic really shows how that Chevron building and the Houston Centers cheapen the overall nightlook of Houston's downtown. Wells Fargo plaza, Continental, Wedge and the building that changes colors are the only buidings that i think somewhat do anything for Houston's nightlit downtown. Houston definitely needs to take notes from Dallas In My Opinion.
  23. Just a crazy idea, but sometimes i drive thru downtown houston and see some depressed areas and how new hotels have their eyes on uptown and figure, " Maybe we should just call our uptown DOWNTOWN. I mean that's where everybody wants to live. That's where most of the traffic in Houston snarles like in LA. This area has alot of things i think downtown Houston should have w/ the exception of metrorail and main st. Things like high quality shopping and more eateries. But am i the only one who's thought of this? I know it sounds crazy and i know i might piss off alot of houstonians here but is it too late for dt? Everything touristy or from out of town seems to only want to associate itself with uptown. Go on the dallas forum where they talk about all the proposed hotels for uptown houston and how downtown's hotel's are in unstable condition? Even that new pavilion area mall type development that just got approved for uptown. It just seems like uptown takes bolder strides to changing the face of the city than some of the things done in downtown, it feels as if they are two different cities. Don't come down on me too hard if i sound a little ignorant, i mean i am still relatively new in Houston, but i wanted to share with you all a thought that has crossed my mind. Any thoughts?
  24. Pardon my ignorance, but what and who is the Wulfe Company? Who are these people. I see their signs on almost every downtown/midtown vacant lot. What are they supposed to be?
