Ugh! I’m shocked at the number of self storage places in this city.

Are they ever going to cover the parking podium with something? I can't believe they've left it as bare concrete, it's incredibly ugily . . .
Couldn’t agree more.

I understand that this is a Holl building and that glowing boxes are sort of his thing. It’s a fine building, and I’m sure the interior will be nice and functional. Safe with a little twist, in my opinion. I’m just waiting for Houston to commission a “take your breath away” piece of architecture that makes people worldwide go, “Whoa!” I think we missed an opportunity to really advertise Houston’s impressive cultural establishment to the world. I’d submit places like Bilbao, Denver, Mexico City, Antwerp, Valencia, Hanoi, Paris, Alberta, Minneapolis have seized their opportunity more effectively.

Looks to me like the crane is being used to do some exterior work on Drewery Place. Can’t imagine they’d need a crane, much less one extended that far, for work done on on an empty lot.

The model/rendering looks cool. I’m still bummed that the most interesting aspect of the exterior design (imho) — the roof — will go largely unseen. Although, it should translate to a spectacular ceiling on the inside.

^ It looks like the tall tower in the first pic and the last pic have have different designs. Which render is the most recent version?
I think they are the same design, but the perspectives are different and one is a daytime render while the other is night.

Cars were parked in the lot during the march on Tuesday when you posted this.. Unless the underground utilities were in the city ROW/not interfering with parking. Not much happening construction-wise, but I ran by there yesterday and they were removing the parking signs from the entrances. It’s not much. . . but it’s something.

Poor Regent Square- they were all set to begin construction in 2009 then the Great recession happened. Then they strategically decided to table the master plan and start with a stand-alone apartment tower missing out on a decade of boom time in Houston n which this project would have incredibly successful. Then they scale back their master plan and begin construction and then a pandemic throws the retail market into limbo.
Wouldn’t it be kind of a good thing to be under construction during a downturn? If you anticipate that the market is recovering when this project delivers (in two years or so), their timing may be perfect. Or am I missing something?

Agree to disagree? This thing looks like a cheap piece of crap that will age extremely poorly. The first floor actually bothers me the least, but it has *zero* relationship with the rest of the building. The windows don't even line up!
Totally agree!

To me, this is REALLY unattractive!

Anyone feel like this will be a Heaven on Earth Inn in about 30 years?
I’m thinking it goes more the way of Houston House.

The parking podium was never covered in any previous renderings. It’s definitely not the crown jewel of Midtown, but it’s adequate infill. I just hope they change the stucco from its current cement gray tone. White would be nice.
It’s interesting to see The Travis in close proximity to Drewery Place. It makes me appreciate the quality Cayden puts into its product!

Now that the podium is complete, this will rise quickly. It’ll be fun to watch! 😁

I'm guessing this is why it took so long to get this off the ground. I bet it took awhile to get the capital and land together for the vision, but knowing that its under one vision and one person is great to hear. Thats more promising than it being with some development company that can change anything on a whim.
Or, conversely, an iconic mixed-use project driven by one person who is not an expert in real estate development could wind up with unforeseen pitfalls that threaten the dream. Time will tell. I hope @Luminareis right!

Which ones are those in the renderings? The two fronting Allen Parkway?
Yes.

Looks like they are building the smaller tower first.
I think the building going up first is the 4-ish story mini-building on the NW corner of the plot, yes? At the same time, it looks like their Excavating in the location of the residential tower on the NE corner. Maybe they’ll start foundation work on that one soon. I can’t imagine they’d excavate the area and then just leave an open pit for later development.

This looks beautiful! Not what I would expect to see as an “affordable” housing project.

Is SEARCH moving away?
They relocated to Eado a while ago. They’re at the block bounded by St. Emanuel/Franklin/Chartres/Congress. Interesting choice of relocation, since I think that’s one of the blocks that gets blown out with the I-45 relocation project, should it actually happen.
