    Texas is receiving $26.9 million for improvements to the Port of Houston, including 30 new zero-emission, short-haul trucks and portable electric chargers for battery electric vehicle trucks to make zero-emission technology accessible and more affordable to owners and operators of small trucking fleets. It will also pay for the installation of new automated terminal operating systems to reduce truck idling times.

    Thirty new electric trucks are coming to Port Houston, as part of a federal program aimed at reducing pollution around America's ports.

    Transportation officials announced Wednesday that Port Houston would receive $26.9 million for new short-haul trucks, portable chargers and other upgrades at the cargo center.

    “Investing in our ports to improve air quality and reduce pollution while modernizing infrastructure and strengthening supply chains is not only the right thing but also the smart thing," said Rep. Sylvia Garcia, D-Houston, who represents the areas west of the port. "What we are doing here is not only environmental justice but will help to transform the lives of thousands of workers and lay the groundwork for a brighter, more resilient future for our port."

    The Orange Show At 2401 Munger St.

    David Best leaves Houston this week as he arrived from California late last month, driving a brightly striped vehicle topped by a life-sized plastic horse painted safety orange. But Best, a sculptural artist, is leaving something behind after last weekend’s Art Car Parade. 

    Renowned for his intricately designed, ephemeral wooden structures, Best, his Temple Crew, and a team of volunteers have constructed his first temple in Texas over the past two weeks. The Houston Temple was unveiled on April 12, the day after the Art Car Parade, where Best's Orange Horse was one of three first place winners. Admittedly, “unveiled” is a bit of a misnomer: The temple extends far into the sky in the Gulfgate/Pine Valley area near East End. There is no veiling it.

    On view through Nov. 6 at The Orange Show World HQ, 2334 Gulf Terminal Drive.

    Houston Temple will remain on the Orange Show campus through November 6, at which point it will meet the same end as the nine temples Best has designed for the Burning Man festival — a week-long desert-set art and community event founded in 1986 — as well as others around the world: It’ll be burned to the ground, part of a healing ritual.

     The Texas A&M University System Board of Regents voted Thursday to begin construction on the $370 million State Emergency Operations Center and agency headquarters for the Texas Division of Emergency Management just east of Austin’s Bergstrom International Airport.

    The $370 million total includes $9.7 million for land acquisition and just over $360 million to build the 295,978 square foot facility, which includes a five-story office building and the State Emergency Operations Center.

    Nancy and Rich Kinder

    Nancy and Rich Kinder ranked in at No. 315 on Forbes' 38th annual World Billionaires List. With an estimated wealth of $8.1 billion, the couple have become synonymous with transformational arts, education, green space and quality-of-life initiatives in Houston.

    Over the past two decades, the Kinder Foundation has donated more than $20.2 million to downtown urban park non-profit.

    The Kinder Foundation pledged $50 million in 2013 toward the Houston Parks Board's Bayou Greenways Project. Additional lead gifts include $100 million donation to Buffalo Bayou Partnership, $50 million to the Kinder Institute for Urban Research at Rice University, $70 million to Memorial Park, $30 million to Buffalo Bayou Park, $5 million to 50 SPARK Parks, $4.7 million to Emancipation Park, $4 million to Willow Waterhole, $3 million to Trees for Houston and $2 million to Hermann Park.

    The Kinders gave nearly $75 million to Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, where Rich Kinder serves as a chairman on the board of trustees. Their gift led to the naming of what is now the Kinder Building, a permanent home for the museum's international collection of modern and contemporary art.
