  1. If you want your investment to grow you should be supportive of this plan.  If the heights becomes another strip mall centric Katy then your 900sqft bungalow won't net you as much profit.

SMH. You dont get it. Some people have roots here and its folks who have these types of comments, 'your 900sqft bungalow', that are ruining it. Ha. You come off so negative on this and ND site.

I'm all for new developement but this us and them is ridiculous. I've lived here all of my life, so you can build whatever you want. This will never erase the memories I have of this place. Lets see these houses after our next big hurricane. ;) I grew up in a bungalow and those houses are built to last.

Be nice behind your keyboard son.

P.S. I like to VISIT Katy, its changed so much over the last 30 years.

  2. Sorry to dig up an old topic, but as I live a block from where the Stude Park trail ends suddenly before reaching the Heights bike trail, I was wondering if anyone had an update on this linkage?  Seems like they are spending money to redo an old section of the trail near the new Elan heights building which didn't need to be done, or are they removing that section of the trail?

You can even see the trail that's been worn into the grass by people fording the creek to get to the park/downtown.

    "Elan Heights" WTF is this?

  3. Since the Liberty Oyster crew took over, The El Cantino Real Superior food has improved considerably.  As has the service.  Of course it's their spin on Mexican food--but it's tasty.

(What is REAL Mexican food?  Tex-Mex?  Or from some region of Mexico?  Which region? High-brow or low-brow?  Seafood? The city boasts fine examples of all those subtypes & they all get my money in turn. El Superior is, at last, a good addition to the neighborhoo

I'm sure it will be. The decor and colors are beautiful.  <_< Food is OK at best and yes they are getting your money. Im just saying if you explore a little, there are many hidden gems around the area.....for so much less $$.

What is real Mexican food? Depends, if your in Mexico, its there. Youre in Texas, so there goes your answer.

  4. Rents go up, so do the prices.  That's why the most interesting restaurants are rarely found in the nicest neighborhoods.

I'm sure we'll see more places close due to rent pressure or demolition this year.

I agree with this, but if you are going to put out a product in a city that is saturated with plenty of delicious 'authetintic' foods, it better be at least close to it. Just my opinion.

  5. These prices at these restaurants are just ridiculous. Ive lived here a long time and its comical what some folks think is good food. How are you going to open a Mexican restaurant that doesnt serve REAL Mexican food? Putting a car on a building and hanging up colorful lights doesnt do it. The food folks. Its the food.SMH. I'll just keep on making a trip to the other side of 45 or East Houston for some authentic Mexican Food.

  6. Also, Los Cucos is finally opening this weekend.  It is supposed to be a more upscale concept than the stuff they have in the burbs.

I tried them this weekend and was pleasantly surprised. I had been to other Los Cucos restaurants near the outer burb areas but this one was very different.  The drinks were on point too! Great little place but its kind of pricey.

If the idea is to not block the public right of way then people who have shrubs, trees, debris, etc. blocking it need tickets as well. Then there are the places where the sidewalk is in complete disrepair. Most of the sidewalk on my street is not walkable and one street over is completely blocked by low hanging tree limbs. A hypothetical, if someone's car is blocking the grass where a sidewalk would be had the city built one (but stopped one driveway short) are they in violation? If so, I've gotta tell my neighbor to move his car biggrin.gif

Again, I understand that I was in violation, there is just a lot of problems with the justification of the law. Part of it is me just being frustrated with the city in their inability to handle issues that my neighbors and I have brought up to them multiple times. Just needed to vent. Of course this happens on my day off and while I was inside for a couple of hours before running more errands. tongue.gif

When I go fishing, I dont catch all of the fish.

  8. Another retail spot would be better than those ugly condo/townhomes that are going up on Yale. This intersection hasnt always been this busy but it has always been a !!!!! to cross. Ive seen many accidents and near accidents here. Unfortunatly, with the recent growth in HH, Im afraid most intersections off Yale will be just as bad. We have a lot of folks that cut thru our neighborhood to get to 610.

  9. Went to the Birdhouse at 11:30 today based on reviews above. Parking was very small and full so thought drive thru was the answer. One car ahead of me; great. It took 20 minutes to take that car's order because the order taker was too busy taking orders from walk-ups, maybe 6 people in line inside the restaurant. When I finally got to place an order, I simply asked "I waited 20 minutes to place an order, how long will it take to get the food?" The order taker took offense at my 20 minute wait statement, argued that point for 5 minutes and then stated "it is lunch time you know and I'm the only front person so you just have to wait your turn". Then she stated "it will be at least 20 - 25 minutes to get your food out due to the lunch hour rush". I stated that of course everyone knows that 11:30 is the lunch hour and I would have thought that of all businesses, a restaurant would plan and staff accordingly for said lunch hour rush." She appeared confused by my statement so I gave her a quick Thank you and drove off.  Might be symptomatic of start up pains so I'll try again on an off hour but just wanted to warn everyone that if you are pressed for time at lunch hour, you should consider an alternative until they get their act together.   I'm hoping the Birdhouse ownership reads this quasi review and does some remedial customer service training.

I'm hoping the Birdhouse ownership reads this and gives the girl up front a raise. Im sure they are working on how to staff for what times and days. No reason to b!tch about it because they couldnt cook chicken like the fast-food chain down the street. The chicken was damn good when I went. I'll be going back for sure.

  10. Went to the Bird House on 11th across from Buchanan's for lunch.  In addition to the fried chicken they also have a chicken fried steak that was mighty tasty.  They told me they are planning to do crawfish again for next season.  The Boil House and Bird House are the same folks.

I went and tried this and it was pretty damn good. I think they are a drive through but you can easily park on Oxford and walk there. Not a big place but great for a quick bite.

  11. The corner of Europa and 35th, 3500 block of Cornel and Omega St. With more to come. I've also noticed other new construction in the area. Once the building gets underway lots will go fast as the area is not that big and IH is not in as bad a shape as the Proper Heights was before its transformation started. I'm buying now.

Funniest comment in this thread. You have got to be kidding me.I remember that area well and you cant compare the Proper Heights and IH. Are you a builder?
  12. Didnt his mom live here next to Helms Elem and dad in Pasedena? I forgot about all of that. We moved here around 74. There was also 2 other killers in this area. I want to say that Henry Lucas guy was also thought to have killed a girl in 1st Ward.....which is now the 'Arts District'. Then there was that guy that buried a woman along the bayou near Stude Park. He lived in the SkyLine Apartments that are now torn down.

    Does anyone else remember this?

  13. The murder probably occurred very early in the morning.  Body was found @4:45 am.  Also, it looks like the victim was a transient/homeless man.  No more of a coincidence than the fact that the two crimes were both committed near where businesses are baking bread (Sarita's and Subway).

The smoke shop is more of a "you put your weed in it" place than an e-cig.  I would guess that they would do a lot of cash business (who would want to put a weed pipe on a credit card?) and might have a decent amount of cash on hand in comparison to their security measures in place (or lack thereof).

    **Law and Order sound**

    Thats good work right there.

Seriously, those idiots are lucky they didnt accidently shoot a baby.

  14. Lots of petty thefts and break ins in the Heights yes. There has always been crime here and all over Houston. You just get more of it in your face because of social media. Theives are going to where the $$ is. Its not a small town folks. WE NEED MORE POLICE PRESENCE.

Memorial, West U, Bellaire, Galleria, Pearland, and Friendswood     uhm....OK

    @Subdude   NextDoor Heights app.

  15. Folks on ND Heights are freaking out. Growing up here, I've seen this before unfortunatly. It didnt happen all of the time but as a young man I saw scenes like this before :(  We do need more police presence around here.

Do we even know what happened? Where it happened? Did it happen in the Heights? Did he get dumped there? I think we should let the investigators figure it out before we flip out. Crime in HOUSTON is pretty bad. Very sad.
