Wish they would get rid of the Giant looming flood flights , and update to something shorter and more modern. Nothing ruins the Sabine Street view like the giant power lines and flood lights.

Not to mention the need for blackout curtains nearly a half mile away... and now they want to elevate Katy inside the loop.

  2. Fred's Italian Corner in the strip center at Greenbrier and Holcombe closed around the same time as Buon Appetito. 🥲  Let's also pour one out for Patronella's (Marvin Zindler's fave).

Not quite the entire full on deal, but Spaghetti Western on Shepherd between Washington and the Katy is still around - haven't been there in a while, though.

Some were, but it backfired.  There was an article and photo in the newspaper showing the immigrants being welcomed with open arms by various relocation groups.

Many cities and states are happy to have immigrants (that's why so many sign up for refugees from overseas).  More immigrants = more federal money.

Some of us are old enough to remember when welcoming refugees (regardless of the reason for displacement) and helping them resettle was considered a very American thing to do.

  4. Actually, the bonding company or companies for whoever is responsible will be the ones coughing up the cash (and as is often the case with insurance companies, it'll likely have to be dragged out of them) because public projects have to have performance bonds.  Any litigation / arbitration will probably have XYZ Co as the named defendants, though.  That said, whoever's bonding company(/ies) pays up will probably have to reimburse the bonding company (or as suggested, get cleaned out), since construction bonds are generally secured, typically at least with indemnities and unless often with hard assets.

What is mil and overlay is that considered a complete rebuild of the street? Or just new asphalt being laid over it?

Mill and overlay is peeling off most if not all of the current surface and repaving with asphalt.  It can work pretty well IF the asphalt bonds well to the substrate, and IF the substrate is in decent shape.  It's what they're doing currently east of Weslayan.

Just read Chapter 3 Article I of the city ordinance, and you are right, Texas law allows the city to make alcohol free zones.

The default is 300 feet from any public or private school, hospital, or church, and it can be extended up to 1,000 feet.

The city does have the ability to grant variances, but it looks like it has to be voted on by city council.

Additionally, the ordinance specifically carves out hotels in the central business district. Also, any restaurant in the CBD is carved out assuming there is no exterior signage that says that they sell alcohol and there is not outdoor seating.

Also, there's a special carve-out for sports stadiums.

    This city sometimes lol.

IIRC, at least when the stadium was built the measurement was front door to front door, and Annunciation "moved" its main entrance to accommodate the stadium.  Again IIRC that's when Annunciation's fencing on that side went up.
