  1. Yes, Third was has been changing from multiple directions. The dangerous aspects aside, it really is an interesting part of town to live. The Bayou, The slightly rolling terrain of Riverside Terrace, The beautiful big houses surrounded by delapidated shacks, the history, the food, the University culture (however shall it was at the time).

My favourite thing to do was bike riding along the path down brays Bayou to Hermann park.

As to the lower income people moving out, the ones I know have been moving to the burbs.

From what I understand of Europe, this is the way a lot of their cities work: rich interior, poor surroundings. For a long time, it's been the opposite in the US (much to the confusion of Euro tourists) but now that trend is of course changing.

  2. The AT&T building is actually a predecessor to a data center.  Back when telephone switching equipment took lots of space, they had to build buildings like this just to handle telephone calls.  There's a similar one downtown, too.  Nowadays the switching equipment is much more compact, so I guess these buildings could be converted to data centers.  Usually companies like to have data centers be much less prominent, though.  I have no idea what all this building is being used for now.  I'm sure some of it is still used for switching, but I think that wouldn't occupy the whole building.  It used to have a bunch of antennas, I think for microwave frequencies, on the roof, but they are all gone now.

From what I have been told, and I don't remember the technical terms, it's a hub for internet and phone service in that area. The similar building in downtown serves the same purpose.

  3. Yep, I could hear the jackhammers from home, on Friday.  They have Hawthorne blocked from home.  It looks like I'll have to find another way to get to Kroger.  I wonder how long this is going to take.

Not very long, they seem to be making pretty good progress. All these damn public works projects and construction projects around Montrose are messing up my bike commutes!!

  4. A lot more rebar onsite.

Where are our HAIF photographers! Oh wait...

I wanna join the club! Midtown, Montrose, Museum District, and Rice Village is a big enough area for me on a slow day :P I'll leave DT to the people who live/work there!

  5. http://www.houstonchronicle.com/business/real-estate/article/City-to-collect-again-when-Midtown-building-sells-5298648.php Maybe this is part of the overall MATCH complex?

I'm not sure what the status of MATCH but I know Trinity Episcopal is now taking steps to build a walkway from the Center north of their building to the small parking spaces (accessed from Francis street) next to The Bering House to allow staff access to building when the parking lot on Holman in under construction.

So maybe things will start happening soon.

I seem to recall an apartment block design for the old permit building?
