  1. I've got photos and videos of the snowfall on December 19th 1989. First time I can remember it sticking to the cement!
  2. ....and 1970's teen heart-throb Tony DeFranco from "The DeFranco Family" is also in real estate: http://www.tonydefranco.com/ http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DeFranco_Family
  3. I rememeber it quite well. It premired in July of '85 and only lasted about a year as I recall. It was called "TV5" For a 12 year-old without cable like me it was great to finally see what my friends were talking about with MTV. This was the 2nd "new" TV station I remember. The first was "20 Vision" in 1984. The main thing they broadcast each evening was "Hawaii Five-0" reruns! Sometime thereafter Channel 67 started up...but soon replaced its lineup with the "Home Shopping Channel."
  4. Here's a slide that my Dad took during Christmas 1958:
  5. One of the reasons why I've never wanted to work there....never wanted to have "BJ Services" listed on my resume. Had a girlfriend years ago that could have listed it!
  6. This discussion reminds me of the joke that Chris Rock used to say: "In each town there are two malls; the white mall and the mall whites 'used' to go to."
  7. I'm voting that I love it. Of course, I'm biased due to family attachment. My Grandfather worked for the Humble Oil Co from 1927 until his death in 1972. Most of that time was in Longview, TX. In 1960, he relocated to Houston at the same time they constructed their new HQ. These are photos that my Grandfather and my Dad (his son) took during that time: Photos of the Humble Bldg Constuction
  8. Has anyone considered a fundraising drive to buy the River Oaks/Alabama Theaters from Weingarten outright? These little protests/boycotts/meetings/delicate flower sessions are not doing a thing. Seems to me the only thing that Weingarten understands is money (not an unreasonable thought from a corporate standpoint). Purchasing the theaters would prevent them from being demolished. Yo, Carolyn Farb, rather than stand there and complain, get some of your fellow rich folks in River Oaks and buy the place! Put your money where your mouth is. The boycott thing ain't going to work. Watch "You've Got Mail" as an example of that.
  9. The best place is The House of Pies (or Guys) on Kirby & Alabama. Their waffle platter is to die for! Great people watching as well.
  10. I had never seen this old photo of the shopping center. If anyone else has any photos of the River Oaks, they should post them here.
  11. There was also a Wyatt's on 43rd street & Ella. There was a Weingarten's across the street. Both closed sometime in the late 80's early 90's.
  12. Looks like they are just about to demolish the north side of the River Oaks Shopping Center. I walked around it today and saw work crews pulling up pipe and constucting a fence around the complex. For posterty, I took these photos yesterday so that we can remember it the way it was. Why they couldn't just turn the existing structure into a BN I have no idea. The River Oaks Shopping Center on August 3, 2007
  13. Thanks for the replies. What's the average rate for a condo maintence fee in Houston? The mortage calculator on sites like har.com ignore this key financial data.
  14. I was checking out har.com and found several condos in the $40-70k range at THE SUSSEX highrise on 7520 Hornwood Dr near Sharpstown mall off of 59. Does anyone know if this is a nice condo complex to live in? What about the area of town? Along the same lines, anyone have any thoughts of 2016 Main in Downtown? I'm looking for a purchase a condo but I would like to keep the price under 80k if possible. Does anyone know where I could get info on maintience fees for condos in Houston? Har does not list them. Thanks Josh
  15. But if you look at the same set of slides from above, there is a Billboard in the photo of the old Humble Oil Building with an ad for a 1959 Buick. In the same cube of slides is a photo of my Grandfather and his mother. She died in the sprint of 1959.
  16. If you're not aware, I posted photos of this building under construction here: http://www.houstonarchitecture.info/haif/i...8&hl=Humble+Oil My grandfather worked for Humble starting in 1927 until he died in Nov 1972, about a month after they changed to Exxon.
  17. Check out housingmaps.com it links craigslist and googlemaps. Great way to search via visual location.
  18. Uh...that's because this is 2005 and not 1991....there is a time and a season.....
  19. The "Polk" sign is also visible in the photo as well. It would make sense that this would be Main and Polk because that is alos the intersection of the original Humble Oil bld. Most likely my father took the photo because my grandfather worked for Humble. He was probably waiting for him to get out of the office and took this as an opportunity to take a few night shots. Yesterday, I took the liberty of taking a few up-to-date photos of the same areas. Main and Polk
  20. My dad was pretty accurate with dates and the date in question is Christmas 1958. He wrote that on the box and the slide has an imprint of Jan -1959
  21. You are correct they are all slides. Most if not all had not be seen in 40 years. My dad had them all in those Argus slide cubes rather than the circular Kodak machine. His slide projector broke many years ago so they were in storage since. Regretfully, I did not find about about the Nikon Ice technology until well after I scanned them in 2002. I used a Minolta Dimage slide scanner to scan them and used adobe photo shop to do auto color balence on them. It took me three hours a night for four months to scan them and do not look forward to repeating the process. Perhaps as the technology gets even better and the prices come down I will attempt to scan them again. My Dad has always been a rather cheap bastard so I was pleasently surprised when I found he used ALL color film from 1956-79. There was not one B&W slide in the bunch!
  22. I should put together an album. I'll look into it.
