  1. Does anyone remember Hebert's Steakhouse near downtown? It was a restaurant in an old, 2-story frame house with the best steaks and shrimp cocktail with their signature (and killer!) remoulade sauce. Their neon sign had a bear on it and it read "A Bear's" so people would know how to pronounce their name. I went on many a date there, including with my husband. As I recall, the restaurant burned down in the 80's (?) and was never rebuilt.
  2. Hey there! Thanks for remembering my original thread. Yes, I've seen the activity and I'm absolutely thrilled. I'd love to know if the owners are doing the renovation or if it's being handled by some kind of historical preservation society. Either way, I cannot believe it's finally happening. I would pay those people to walk through that house. It's like a moment stood still in Houston 1905 and is forever captured. Look at those original horse ties at the front on the street. I think I saw one of the owners speaking with a painter on the sidewalk but I didn't have the nerve to ask if I could see the house. I'm sure they'd say 'no' from what I've heard. And my husband's convinced that someone would chase me around with a chainsaw if I got in.......... Actually, I'd almost be willing to take that chance! Anyone got any inside scoop on the Westmoreland renovation?????
  3. It was 'Tiddies,' Mid, and I still have Tiddies' koozies with big breasts silk-screened on them in white. There was nothing like Tiddies, and I also made a pilgrimage to the Tiddies' factory, such that it was.........
  4. I was unable to stay for the 3 hr. 10 min. documentary but had my husband drop me off (as he circled the MFAH) in order to buy a copy. Unfortunately, I was told, the DVD would not go on sale until after the documentary had aired and then later (the following week) in the MFAH gift store. A man heard me and introduced himself as 'Jon Schwartz,' to which I immediately replied "you're the director!" He very graciously offered to retrieve a copy from his car parked nearby if I wanted to purchase one then instead of later. I waited on a bench for his return and he asked me to hide it in my purse since it was not supposed to be available yet. I was absolutely delighted to comply and asked everyone for a Sharpie so he could sign my DVD. We chatted for only a second as the documentary was about to begin, shook hands and I left feeling great about my accomplishment. What a very nice man! He made my month.
  5. No urban legend about it. My husband attended Johnston MS and yes indeed, they swam nude. In fact, when he told me about it, I accused him of making it up. Frankly, I was quite appalled by it, even alluding to the idea that the swim coaches must have been pervs, but he assured me it was totally accepted by all, no parental or student complaints, and apparently no untoward 'incidents' were ever reported. A different time indeed......
  6. Just wanted to say that my hubby and I saw U2 at Cardi's, early '80s, as well as The Ramones.....what an era!!!!!
  7. OMG, I thought my husband and I were the only ones who hated the Wal-Mart in Meyer Park. We avoid that store at all costs. Merchandise is strewn all over the floor, especially during holidays and back-to-school. The staff is rude, surly, incompetent, defiant, apathetic and....did I say rude? Many times we left baskets of goods because one or two check-outs were open for dozens of customers. Praise be to Target in Meyerland Plaza! They're friendly, helpful, cheerful and - gasp - will even ask if they can help you! Unbelievable. Even more amazing, they have people standing at the check-outs to tell you when the next cashier is available to help move shoppers through the line. What is UP with that? Courtesy and professionalism at a discount store? What will they think of next......
