  1. I'm not sure how HSPVA works today, but when I was in school,  HSPVA pulled students from all over the district.   You had to audition in your desired discipline in order to be accepted to the school.   A student is not "zoned" to HSPVA according to their residence.   I would think, that once complete, maybe, maybe 2-3% of the students that attend the school will actually live downtown.

  2. I'm not crazy about the design, but anything is better than the old car wash!   Waiting for this intersection to take off - waiting to see what will go in on the vacant lot across the street and what will happen to the old shopping center on the other side of Studewood.     Wonder how long DaVita Dialysis and Sola Salon will be there?

The nuns have zero obligation to satisfy your personal esthetic values with respect to what their buildings look like. Their non-profit purpose is not to further the goals of architecture mavens, in this case it is to provide religious based education to girls. I assume they are fulfilling that role.

Perhaps the next time this comes up, you can lead the fund raising effort and convince the next group to "save" the building. I'm perfectly happy for that to happen - I actually like cool old buildings. I am not happy when people with no stake in the project, other than personal esthetic preferences, try to tell people what to do with their property.

Everyone take a deep breath!    The first choice was to renovate the Clayton building.   The architects came back with a plan to include 4 classrooms and some office space.  That was the best they could do with the interior of the existing building.    It simply did not meet the current and future needs of the school.

Check out the plan for the new building:

  5. I'm an alumna of Incarnate Word and attended the "Farewell" party for the building on Saturday.

When I was in school there in the late 80s, the building was home to approximately 5 sisters.   The last 2 sisters vacated the building sometime last year. Prior to my time at the academy, the building was used for classrooms.  However the inside had been reconfigured so many times in the past century, that there was nothing left from the original architecture.

Last fall, we were supposed to have a special dinner in the building for alumnae, but it was cancelled due to the lack of structural integrity of the building.   They said the floor was too uneven, and they were afraid someone would fall.

According to Sr. Lauren Beck, the mosaic tiles on the building will be saved and incorporated into a sign on the existing building.

I, for one, am all for the construction of a new building there.  We have to remember that the school is not there to serve the past, but to educate and serve current and future students.  That is their mission.
