Plans take shape for arts center in Woodlands

Consultant offers top ideas to build facility for area in Town Center

By BETH KUHLES

Creating a community arts center, ballet center or a satellite facility for the Houston Museum of Natural Science are the top three recommendations from a consultant studying options for building a cultural arts venue in The Woodlands Town Center.

Duncan M. Webb of Webb Management Services, a New York-based consultant for the development and operation of performing arts centers, recently completed a feasibility study on a cultural arts center for The Woodlands.

In addition to the top three choices, Webb also suggested a large, indoor performing arts center, a college theater with a Shakespearean festival, a culinary school, a reinvented children's museum and a production house for the Houston Grand Opera.

"It's street-level activity," Webb said. "It's lights on in the building. It's people coming indoors and outdoors. There is a huge impact in the downtown area. People want to eat, shop and be there. For corporate recruitment, it offers a lot to employees and the corporations."

This would be perfect and much needed. I'd welcome anything that offers an alternative to the cultural wasteland that is the mall. They should build a facility that has two components: a performing arts center and a production house for the Grand Opera/ballet center. They should build a college theater and a satellite for the Museum of Natural Science in the College Park area near the University Center.

Guess the drive to "the city" is getting a little far.

in the article, the natural science museum is already considering satellite locations throughout the greater houston area. other cities are doing similar projects. exhibits will not be duplicated.

the woodlands area has a strong science community. we have a successful school of science and technology at college park high school. we have national corporations here with huge r&d budgets right here in the woodlands. many or all of these corporations will want to be a part of a natural science museum here.

i think the community will rally behind it. a satellite science museum in the woodlands will have much more success than one elsewhere in our region, IMO.

how awesome it will be, if it has an imax component. we may even get some interesting architecture.

Is this a concept used elsewhere? I would not like to see a little used museum in The Woodlands. I think all of this is coming from the Pavillion model which has been somewhat successful, or maybe more than is evident from a financial viewpoint.

The article bachanon posted from the Chronicle includes this:

"Another example is The Heard Museum in Phoenix, which is opening a second location in Surprise, Ariz. The facility will feature long-term exhibits, traveling exhibits, a classroom for hands on activities, tours and classes, adult program and continuing education efforts. The new location will allow the museum to increase accessibility to its permanent collection, increase educational program and raise awareness of native cultures and arts.

In Charlotte, N.C., the Charlotte Nature Museum is creating a satellite for its discovery place, including exhibits and programs in science, technology and math. The satellite facility will focus on native plants and animals, tours, day camps and workshops."

The satellite for the Houston Museum of Natural Science is open. As of the first day, they were about 85% complete. They have some great dino exhibits, geode/rock displays, a number of 'hands on' activities and a couple of other things. It's small but very interesting.

Admission is free for the first week.

Now, if we can just get the art museum to open something around here.
