October Mod of the Month

Houston Mod invites you to join us this Sunday, October 10, 2021
for a Mod of the Month open house event from 2 - 4 PM.

Please help find new preservation-minded owners for these nifty vintage modern houses located in the Glenbrook Valley Historic District, about 8 miles southeast of downtown Houston.

In 2011, after a three year struggle, the neighborhood of Glenbrook Valley, consisting of 1,256 houses, was designated Houston's first historic district outside of the Loop 610 freeway and is believed to be the largest mid-century era residential historic district in the United States. While visiting, note the recent vintage-styled neighborhood entrance markers, extensively landscaped recreational medians along Broadway and the many newly reconstructed streets with new utilities throughout the area plus the ever improving condition of the houses and landscapes.

Thanks to Houston MODern Market for sponsoring this FREE event.

An eye-catching front elevation with large gridded living room window and starburst accented entry set the tone for this appealing mod ranch on one of the most attractive streets in the historic district. The interior is equally attractive including exposed brick walls, a fireplace, and custom built-ins.  Many rooms open to the patio, complete with vintage swimming pool. This house was featured on Houston Mod's "Mad About Mod" home tour  in conjunction with DoCoMoMo's national tour day when approximately 250 attended.

J. D. Swenson built the house in 1959-1960.  He built several in the area including some in Meadowcreek Village as well as others with architect E. Kelly Gaffney, AIA, featured on the Parade of Homes.

Here's a rare find- a mid century ranch style house that's an absolute time capsule available and situated in the Glenbrook Valley historic district.  If you are looking for a house free of inappropriate updates, this seems to be one.

If you have information about these or other vintage mod designs, please share it with Houston Mod so it can be included in the Modern in Houston archive.  .

National Tour Day

Houston Mod's event for the DoCoMoMo US Tour Day was held on October 2, 2021, in Pasadena at the Strawberry Park Pavilion. Thanks to everyone who participated and learned about the expressive, cast-concrete structure and park. Architect Charles Holcomb designed the park and pavilion in 1957 and was there Saturday to tell the fascinating story. The City of Pasadena then provided a concert by their philharmonic orchestra and a movie was shown, all under the tremendous pavilion.
