Schools For Refugees

Houston, Texas has many school districts.

The district that covers most of Houston is the Houston Independent School District (http://www.houstonisd.org), which also covers the cities of Bellaire, West University Place, and Southside Place. Houston ISD also covers small portions of Jacinto City, Pasadena, and Pearland (the portion in Harris County).

Houston ISD is opening its schools to Katrina refugees - http://www.houstonisd.org/HISD/portal/arti...6182466,00.html

Call the telephone number on the page to find out which elementary (grades Kindergarten through 5), middle (6 through 8), or high (9-12) school your child is assigned to. The schools chosen are the closest to your temporary location.

After you find out what school your child is assigned to, check the uniform list (http://www.houstonisd.org/HISD/portal/article/front/0,2731,20856_33478330,00.html) to see if your child needs to wear a school uniform. Each Houston ISD school determines its dress code, and most Houston ISD schools choose to have uniform dress codes.

Bellaire High School (http://www.bellaire.org/) is the closest high school to the Astrodome. They have already enrolled refugees and are looking for donations. Bellaire does not require school uniforms.

While I am sure Bellaire is the place refugees would most like to go I have heard there is some pretty significant crowding. I believe there are some other like yates that can hold 2000 but only have around 500 enroled. I believe it was a few years ago HISD considered selling these schools to be run privately. The communities though didn't want that and HISD moved around 50% of the staff to other campuses.

Athletes from Louisiana are qualified to play for Texas schools.

Yeah, Yates has about 1000 right now when they have room for 2000.

Since Bellaire will fill, other refugees in the 'Dome may have to go to Lamar, Madison, Westbury, and Worthing.

EDIT: Klein ISD ( http://www.kleinisd.net ), which covers unincorporated areas in northwest Harris County and a very small portion of Houston, is also enrolling students. Check with the individual school you are assigned to regarding dress code, as some elementary and middle schools in Klein ISD require uniforms.

Klein Independent School District

KleINTOUCH

August 31, 2005

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Klein is a community with a big heart! Students in our schools are responding to the needs of the victims of Hurricane Katrina with generosity and creativity. Some of our families are providing housing for hurricane refugees.

Spring Tabernacle in our area has become an official Red Cross shelter. Currently, the district is developing a plan to coordinate its efforts to help the local refugees.

We have been in communication with the Greater Houston Area Red Cross asking how our community might best assist the hurricane refugees who have come to the Houston area.

Persons who wish to donate food will want to contact the Houston Food Bank www.houstonfoodbank.org (713-223-3700, 3811 Eastex Freeway, Houston 77026). A list of items needed immediately to assist evacuees is found on the Web page.

Persons who wish to donate clothing will want to contact the Salvation Army. The local Salvation Army Thrift Store at 3665 FM 1960 West will accept clothing donations.

To donate to the local Red Cross, you may visit their web site at www.houstonredcross.org to give on-line. Additionally, persons may send checks to the Greater Houston Area Red Cross Chapter, PO Box 201014, Houston, Texas 77210.

Our department of school administration has developed procedures to assist in the enrollment of students who have been displaced as a result of the hurricane. Because these students will not have the kinds of forms usually required for enrollment, our schools will accept them without birth certificates, report cards, etc. If your family is hosting an evacuee family, please take these children to the schools served by your attendance zone.

(When I spoke with the Red Cross volunteer yesterday at the shelter that has opened up on F.M. 2920 at Spring Tabernacle, she said that the elementary-age children will probably be going to Lemm Elementary School, the middle school kids to Schindewolf and the high schoolers to Klein Collins.

The church is already accepting refugees, and the parking lot yesterday was full of Lousiana plates. The people coming in look like they're just still in shock, tired, angry, frustrated, just beaten down, it's just heart-breaking to see. But the church is doing a great job so far.

The whole Spring community has been helping out, bringing lots of clothing, pillows, blankets, air mattresses (big need for this still), and toys for the kids. The kitchen has been working non-stop with a chef presiding over the whole operation, making sure the people coming in are able to have hot meals when they get there.

The woman I spoke with yesterday said that they are planning to keep the shelter open for at least three weeks, maybe longer if necessary. Their biggest need and that of other shelters that are open is going to be just to get volunteers in to help out with everything needed to keep the operation running smoothly.

Everytime we looked at their faces yesterday, my family all felt the same thing; that those people could have easily been us going through this nightmare...)

A Q&A for Houston ISD evacuee students:

http://www.houstonisd.org/HISD/portal/arti...6331542,00.html

Also, Spring Branch ISD serves the cities of Bunker Hill Village, Hedwig Village, Hunters Creek Village, Hilshire Village, Spring Valley, and some areas of Houston outside of the 610 loop that are around those cities, including the community of Old Spring Branch.

EDIT: Stafford MSD http://www.stafford.msd.esc4.net/ - Serving the city of Stafford, accepts Katrina evacuees within its boundaries.

Plano ISD welcomes Louisiana evacuees with open arms!

All the parent needs to do to enroll their child(ren) is show proof of six figure income, membership in an "appropriate" Baptist Church, valid receipt showing ownership of a German made vehicle, or American made, provided it weighs in excess of 6,000 pounds, and most of all, a DNA sample showing less than 1/512th ancestry other than Caucasian.

If the parent cannot provide any of the above required items, proof that the parent is a current or former professional athlete will suffice.

Welcome to Plano, where it takes a village to commit suicide!
