HAIF Bowl Pickem Challenge 2010

Recommended Posts

Haha great name 20thstdad. That alone got me to sign up!

To hell with conference loyalty. There is no reason to do anything other than hate Auburn and hope they lose. Unless you are pulling for them to win, and then a couple months later have it all taken away due to rules violations. That might be almost as good as losing.

First bowl games are a week from tomorrow. People need to get signed up and get your picks in probably by Friday 17th.

A forum comprised of mostly dudes and we only have 5 signed up for a football challenge. Sadness. Despair.

So for the confidence points...we are putting the highest points with our most confident predictions, correct?

As I understand it, yes.

I believe how it works is if the team you rank with 1 confidence points wins, You get 1 point, regardless of which bowl game it is. Same can be said for every winner up to 35 points.

Unlike the strait up Bowl Pickem, I have not found where it says the bowl games are also weighted by importance.

So, my understanding is, there are No incentives to rank more important bowls, for example, rank Auburn with 35 confidence points... You would not get an additional weighted amount of points over if I had given Middle Tennessee 35 confidence points.

If I'm wrong in that assessment, I'll have some re-ranking to do.

You are right, bowl importance has nothing to do with it. You get the points that you assign to a game if you pick it right. I think it plays on those emotional homer or hater picks even more than the against-the-spread format.

Once it locks, your picks will be shown in chronological order to make it easier. Points are given as games complete, and on the group page it will show totals and possible points remaining after each game.

Well, got the picks in. It was an odd year for CFB so who knows how these bowls will play out. Not really much science to my method, just found the games I thought were close to "locks" and moved them up and didn't really mess with the rest. Good luck to everyone named ME!

I've never done one with confidence points before. Over on yahoo, each user's winner and their wager on that game will be displayed under group picks. I'm hoping our ESPN game is the same

There's gonna be lots of ups and downs and turmoil when we see for any given game that one person has waged 30 pnts on team A while someone else has waged 33 pnts on team B.

When the first game starts it will lock all picks and you can see everyone's picks and confidence. Coming up to the last games, you'll be able to do some math (and it'll show you PPR) to figure out the likely scenario.

Looking at tomorrow's games, I think I have single digit confidence on all of them, so even if I'm right I won't have much to show for it.

Ugh. I didn't fill out the confidence points so it looks like it did it for me by the dates of the bowls going from most confident to least as time marches on. Bummer on that one.

That's okay.. I was so distracted by playing with confidence points, that I completely forgot I was supposed to be picking against the spread.

Of course.. i am 4 for 4 so far... so I may have found my new winning strategy for next season.

It's not against the spread, all straight up. For bowls that's never as easy as you would think.

At least I got my 35 pointer right! Enough of this one game per day stuff, I need 5-6 at a time happening.

You're right. I got it confused with my yahoo league, which is against the spread. I just copied all my picks from there over to our espn league.

Still, its working so far. I agree though... ready for next week once serious bowl season starts.

20th and brijon... you two were aware we're supposed to pick who we think would win each bowl, right ?

That's 6 losses in a row for each of ya.

http://games.espn.go...t?groupID=11556

Someone must have sabotaged my picks. I look back on a couple thinking I would never pick that. There are 3 specifically that I originally had right, then I read some column by some sports idiot and decided I should change them. That never works out well. That big 12 bias seems to have hurt you yesterday. Then again I'm an SEC guy and got the same 2 wrong, although for less points.

All is not lost, I haven't lost anything higher than 24. After that I lost a 23, then nothing higher than 13. I knew which ones I didn't know. Something like that. Anyway, it could all change today with big numbers on the line (17, 22, 19, 33).

Yeah.. Baylor looked terrible.

I say we switch back to Yahoo for next time. I'm in a league there as well.

a) it just looks more professional

b ) it hides your opponents pick and wager till game time, which increases the drama.

c) it has your "max score possible" listed as well on the scoreboard

Fine by me, I'll do both. I like seeing everyone's picks lined out, so I can think they're crazy for putting a 27 on Tulsa, then they end up being right. ESPN used to show PPR, and I know they always do for the NCAA bracket challenge, Maybe they got lazy this year or let the interns run this one over the holidays.

I'm winning but not a lot of big points left for me except OU and Nebraska so you never know with the confidence picks. My Big 12 bias hurt with Baylor and Missouri going down. A 1-3 record so far for Big 12 hurts.

About to be 0-3 today, so I would like to change my story to that I am trying to lose on purpose. Because technically, getting them all wrong is as hard as getting them all right.

Syracuse- North Carolina, Nebraska, USF, and Notre Dame provided me with a nice little run. Hopefully UCF can pull it out in the Liberty Bowl.

Bad news is that because I didn't use confidence points, I am running out of opportunities to score many more!

I have 168 points just on today's games, so I either drop even further out of it or make my comeback. Why can't games start at 7am? I can only occupy myself so much with smoking this pork butt since 6:30.

You did stack a lot of points towards the end and definitely a risk taker with 31 on Wisconsin/TCU and 32 on TAMU/LSU which are both coin flips. The good news is you could be set for a big comeback while the rest of us run out of points.

Wow.. I didnt realize till now the lead Aggie and Kinkaid had.

I have 128 pnts riding on today. A Wisconsin win will really help me.

oops, i meant a Wisc win would really help 20stdad... glad TCU won. Looks like I'm gonna get all 128 pnts.

We've both gone perfect so far Kinkaid, but you're right.. your confidence pnts are starting to hurt ya... I've gained 70 on ya so far today.

Aggie, your out-on-a-limb-picks backfired.. but least ya didnt risk too much on em.

Mizzou and Baylor look like pretty big toss-ups for 30 and 32 at this point too. Who can say beforehand? I was happy to lose that 31 on Wisconsin to see the Big 10 go 0-5 today. That's much better than winning the bowl pick em.

As for the 32 on LSU, it's my homer pick. I had us at 1, but then said F that, if we're gonna win I want it to be extra sweet, and if we lose I won't care enough to look at the pick em scores that night anyway.

I did end up at 137 on the day, not too bad.

Kinkaid has 28 points left, with 346 total score

Hwy6 has 86, 324

Aggie has 66, 305

20th Street has 117, 280

Bob has 95, 231

Based on 20th Street picks left, he might catch Hwy 6 based on all but VA Tech & Nevada being opposite picks. I didn't look at every possibility but it looks like Kinkaid and I either run out of points or have too many similar picks to Hwy 6 to beat him and his points that he will gain on similar picks. Sorry Bob but just too far out.

Guess since I'm out I can just focus on Cotton Bowl.

I would say based on my poor picks thus far I'm not catching anyone. I do look forward to Oregon smoking Auburn in the championship. Wishful thinking maybe, but I hate them.

I ran the numbers and you are correct sir. Kinkaid, Aggie92, and Brijon, even if they win out still lose.

20th, you do indeed have a chance. We have all but Nevada game picked differently.

The good news is you don't even have to win out. There is even 1 scenario where you only have to win 3 of the 6 remaining games to be the winner (LSU, KY, Oregon)

Bad news, LSU is a must win for you though. You need your 32 points. My Aggies win, and I could lose every other game and still win the overall by 2 points.

Not including an Aggie win where I'd win outright, If i win exactly any 1 other game, then it will come down to Auburn-Oregon to settle it for us.

Everyone picked Nevada, including me. My only chance to win is for Boston College to pull the upset since most everyone else put a lot of confidence points on the Wolfpack. If Ohio State, Miami of Ohio, LSU, Boston College, Pitt, and Oregon win, then I'll come in first, Highway 6 will be second, DieAuburnDie will move up to 3rd, Aggie92 will drop to 4th, and Bob will bring up the rear. However, only 72 points will separate first from fifth.

Good catch., but actually, its not even that daunting for you.

You're actually in the weird position of needing to lose at this point. Technically, you only need 1 more win, coupled with 2 specific losses, Nev and Pitt. If you lose all your games except Oregon... you win.

I think in any scenario, the Sugar Bowl and MoO game are meaningless.. the door is still open to 3 of us starting with the Cotton Bowl.

Sorry 20th.. I'm wrong. You'd beat me, but I didn't factor in how much a factor Kinkaid still is... those 3 games would not get you the overall victory.

You can miss 1 of the following, Arkansas, Nevada, MiamiOH pick, but everything else you have to get right.

Brijon.. if you win out, you'll be in last place. However... if you get your Miami, LSU, and Oregon picks wrong... You escape to 4th place, while 20th finishes last.

What you all fail to realize is I have picked another game worth 200 pts that is not on the list...that is where I will make my valiant comeback!

OK so obviously I did a terrible job this go round but it could be worse, I could be a Big Ten fan.

We actually have the possibility of a tie here...

If the following win: Ark, MoO, LSU, Pitt, BC, Auburn..... Kinkaid and I will tie. And I have no clue how the tiebreaker works since usually its a combined score thing.

The bad news for me is that I really want the Hogs to win tonight. I HATE Ohio State and the latest news coming out of Columbus about car dealerships and "loaner cars" to players like GMC Denalis is beyond dirty. When will the NCAA crack down on a big time, big ten program? The worst part about it all is how the Big Ten fans like to claim they run a clean conference.

Well.. you Should be rooting for them then.. If the buckeyes win on top of the the above scenario, I'd beat you by 1 pnt in the final standings.

That would be just terrrrible.

A ) You're still alive. If you win the remaining 3 games, you win the overall 374-371 over Kinkaid.

B ) Geaux to hell, Tiger fan !!! :(

Let's Go Eagles!

For Boston, For Boston,

We sing our proud refrain!

For Boston, For Boston,

Tis wisdom's earlthy fane.

For here all are one

And their hearts are true,

And the towers on the Heights

Reach to Heaven's own blue.

For Boston, For Boston,

Till the echoes ring again!

Let's Go Eagles!

Since I didn't do the confidence points, I am going by my own rules... by the # of games picked correctly.

24- RedsoxCoog (me)

22- Highway6

21- Aggie92

18- BobELight

17- DieAuburnDie

Oh, and TCU is #1.
