Urbannizer
District OKs 83rd Street stadium site GALVESTON — The school district will move forward with plans to build a new football stadium on 83rd Street to replace the dilapidated 60-year-old Kermit Courville Stadium on 27th Street, trustees decided Wednesday.Trustees agreed with the recommendation of a stadium committee that the 83rd Street site has advantages because the district owns enough land on 83rd Street to build a new stadium with enough parking to accommodate visitors without having to buy up more land.http://galvestondailynews.com/story.lasso?wcd=150655
plumber2
It's about time. This was the plan back in the early 1970's when GISD acquired the land. Several community leaders have been opposed to this site as a stadium because it is not central to the district. In other words, it would be inconvenient for students and families without private transporatation to attend games. Now the big question...will the district tear down Public School Stadium after the new facility is complete? Nick ניק
Considering there is an under-the-radar effort underway to have the current stadium declared a historical structure and given the protections associated with such declarations, my guess is no. I imagine a deal will be worked out to allow it to be modified for use by O'Connell and Galveston College. It's about time. This was the plan back in the early 1970's when GISD acquired the land. Urbannizer
Stadium sacked; rematch vowedBy Laura Elder The Daily News Published May 9, 2010GALVESTON — Voters Saturday resoundingly rejected issuing as much as $35 million in bond debt for Galveston school district’s proposed multipurpose stadium. Almost 7,000 people cast ballots in the referendum; just more than 2,200, 33 percent, for the stadium bond, and almost 4,600, 67 percent, against. But as stadium opponents were celebrating their landslide victory, supporters of the bond issue already were promising to work to bring a new stadium proposal back to voters. http://galvestondailynews.com/story/156339

Urbannizer
I grew up a block from the stadium and remember when their were plans for a new one. It was rejected because the new location wouldn’t be as accessible for all residents to get to.
