  1. Grant, welcome to the area and thanks for your service to our country. I live in Springfield which is across McLean Road from Westwood Village. The houses are all about twenty years old and were not terribly expensive to begin with. Generally speaking that will mean that there will be maintenance issues such as roof, plumbing, and foundation and probably all the major appliances will be either recently replaced or near their end of life. The neighborhood is quiet, peaceful, and convenient to schools and groceries. Carleston Elementary, Rogers Middle School, Pearland Junior High South, and Pearland High School all provided good experiences and a good education to our daughter, who is finishing her junior year of high school with good grades. The Pearland High School state football championship was a real highlight of this school year. I have never gotten water in my house although it was a little scary during Allison and Ike. I think a few houses near the entry of Westwood have gotten water in a couple of the worst tropical-storm type rain events, and there is street flooding, but I don't think it's been a huge problem. Pearland has been doing a lot of drainage work in the area, so it may be better now than it was during Allison. Perhaps a Westwood resident can weigh in on this? Or look in Springfield, which as far as I know has not had any home flooding.
  2. Thanks Timnwendy. Check the State of the City update that Major Reid presented last night. New High School coming next door to ST. City of Pearland
  3. The article at this next link could be very significant to those of you with kids, who live in west Pearland and are not crazy about the Alvin or Fort Bend ISD. http://www.hcnonline.com/articles/2008/09/...er_students.txt There are a few Pearland schools that won't allow transfer students (see list at bottom of the article), but I suspect that will go away in the years ahead.
  4. The Katy, Klein, Pasadena and Pearland Independent school districts have been named as 4 of the top 100 school districts for best Music Programs in the country which include Band, Orchestra and Choir. The 2007 roster includes school districts from 31 states that are committed to quality music education programs and providing access to music education. The districts were measured across a variety of program support, curricular and programmatic criteria. 8 other Texas School Districts were choosen out of the top 100 pick. 5. Glenda Dawson High School will be built on Cullen near Hawk Road. It will be across the street from the "million-dollar house" on Cullen, and yes, about a 1/2 mile from the cemeteries. They are just about to start clearing the land. The third high school in Pearland will be converted from the existing and newly built Pearland Junior High South on Bailey Road, when a new Junior High is completed just south of Rogers Middle School. 6. The Pearland Independent School District is currently conducting a Bond Program to better serve the students of the district. New Schools are planned in this Bond. Cullen Blvd. (FM 865) near Hughes Ranch Rd. Will the bond increase my taxes if I am over 65 years old? No. Taxes are frozen for all citizens aged 65 and older who have filed for exemptions. What if the bond referendum fails? More portable buildings will be added for classroom instruction. The district will face higher maintenance costs which will impact the funding of instructional programs. The district will have to consider a larger bond referendum in future years. How will kids be divided to the new high school? by neighborhood zoning Bailey Rd. Campus Conversion 2007/2008
  7. I think Pearland and Alvin ISD should merge. The two districts combined cover almost all of the City of Pearland, as well as Manvel, Alvin, and Iowa Colony. All areas west of 288 in north Brazoria are Alvin ISD while some areas east of 288 are Pearland ISD. The two should combine so Pearland can get a second high school close to Shadow Creek Ranch. Perhaps a new 7-8 school and a new 5-6 school can be established in that area too.
