  1. I wonder how much longer this hotel by Vantage Hospitality Group will last considering it's across the street from the TMC3 Campus. On Google, it is also named Sleep 'N Go Hotel Houston Medical Center at 1025 Swanson St.
  2. So recently I've picked up an interest in the late Shamrock Hotel, but this especially caught my eye: Glenn McCarthy. I'm curious as to whether there are any renderings of this--an indoor shopping complex seems very forward thinking and probably would be the first true indoor regional mall if built. Anyone have more details on this? Wyatt C. Hedrick (often misspelled as Wyatt C. Hendrick)
  3. Hello everyone! I was wondering if anyone has ANY information about the old Victory Motel that used to be on McCarty St. (It's now Centro America Truck Sales). There's an old sign that's still standing and some of the neon tubes are still hanging in there. Thanks in advance! Drew
  4. I found an usual motel this week. I wanted to ask HAIF if anyone knew more about it. Mainly, the address. I'm unsure if the old hotel/motel is located on South Main Street, or Old Main Street Road (in this instance, South Old Main Street Road) I guess we can figure this out by the date? This was in 1957, so I believe OMSR was still an active road. If you notice, all the other motels are listed as "S. Main" whereas the last motel, Navarro Motel, is worded differently. Makes me think it's not the same as the others, not on South Main Street. Or perhaps, the writer/journalist/reporter did not know the exact location? Any photos of this historic motel? Any more details? From the publication Texas State Journal of Medicine 1957-12: Vol 53 Iss 12 The following motels are available: Alamotel Court, 8700 S. Main. Braeswood Motel, 2116 Holcombe. Buffalo Inn Hotel, 951 S. Main. Carlon Courts, 8200 S. Main. Nomad Motor Hotel, 10000 S. Main. Plaza Motel, 1700 Old Spanish Trail. Pioneer Motel, 2902 Old Spanish Trail. Rainbow Inn Motel, 3713 Old Spanish Trail. Ranger Motel, 2916 Old Spanish Trail. St. Francis Courts, 3615 Old Spanish Trail. Sun Valley Hotel, 1310 Old Spanish Trail. Wallcroft Gardens, 1857 Old Spanish Trail. Western Skies No. 1, 2806 Old Spanish Trail. King Motel, 9101 Main. Navarro Motel, South Main Street Road.
  5. I found this postcard on worthpoint. Does anyone know about this? I searched and couldn't find anything. I can only assume this hotel was located within the Highland Park Amusement Park that was below the current-day Interstate-45? Awesome building!! Very cool. I also found an advertisement in the newspaper The Houston Post. dated June 18, 1906. Highland Park Hotel Cool, nicely furnished rooms and excellent board, by week or month. Old phone 4503 A.F. M'Clean.
  6. I got this idea from another HAIF member. I wonder the percentage of hotels sitting empty, and that are very active, in the TMC area? Unlike downtown, and other areas, I don't see the TMC hotels being converted into residential. I bet hotels in the TMC stay pretty full unlike areas of town. I know this is a given, but I wish the TMC would create a hotel skyscraper. 40 to 50 stories. I believe the proposed TMC Helix Park hotel is around 30 stories. Then again, people visiting the TMC might not want a luxury skyscraper hotel due to their medical cost.
  7. I was looking around for historic Houston things and came across some cool history. The Hutchins House Hotel from the late 1800s. I wonder if we can find this on any Sanborn maps? The Hutchins House – Houston, Texas $50,000 has been expended in remodeling and refurnishing this hotel. It is now first-class in every particular; fifty private bath rooms; electric elevator; new light plant; general equipment unsurpassed. American plan, $2.00 to $3.5 per day. European plan, $1.00 to $2.00 per day. Finest Turkish bath rooms in the south. W.T. & J.T. Boyle, Proprietors. I was looking for further information and found an event ticket for the Rail Road Ball that was held on January 23, 1872. From the newspaper The Age. dated July 15, 1875: Hotel - Hutchins House - N.P. Turner Corner Franklin and Travis streets
  8. I found this cool old post card recently and thought I would share. I searched HAIF and couldn't find anything about it. Looks like this one is considered rare! The post card is stamped 1954. Mission Motel U.S. Highway 59 and 90-A (South Side) Houston, Texas Mission Motel 4110 Old Spanish Trail – Milby 9114 U.S. Highways No. 59 and 90-A (South Side) Houston, Texas Ten Minutes From Business Center. Air Conditioned – 72 degrees – Vented Heat in Winter – City *** Ways – Limousine – Theatre – Post Office – Foods – All Within One Block. 9. I've been watching this property. Now listed as Under Contract on Loopnet. https://www.loopnet.com/Listing/2231-W-Holcombe-Blvd-Houston-TX/16387320/
  10. Does anyone know when the Albert Pick Motor Inn located at 3301 Southwest Freeway was active? I'm assuming the motel was in operational in the 1970s? What replaced the demolished motel? Looking on Google Maps, it brings me to the intersection of 59 South at Buffalo Speedway. I see the famous Phoenix Tower located right there. Phoenix Tower has an address of 3200 Southwest Freeway. I found company stationary on Ebay. Looking for info!
  11. On HAIF, I have heard talk about the old motor near Highway 59 and Beechnut. Today I was lucky enough to find an postcard! Looking on Google Maps, it appears a Shell gas station was built over the old motel? You don't see an English style development very often. Very cool! Texas Hospitality In An "Old English" Setting Manor House Inn and Restaurant 8115 Southwest Freeway (at Beechnut) Houston, Texas 77036 / Phone A/C-PR 1-0671
  12. Proposed multifamily at the corner of Southmore & Sampson St SubdivisionPlatPDF_SOUTHMORE ENCLAVE.pdf
  13. Last week I saw a dumpster permit for the Residence Inn By Marriott Houston Galleria located at 2500 McCue Road. Kind of confused. I thought there was another Marriott close by, the Houston Marriott West Loop By The Galleria At 1750 West Loop S. Guess they are different hotels, just 2 miles away from each other.
  14. I was browsing a newspaper dated August 5, 1967 and came across a cool vintage advertisement. 17. Looked everywhere for this one. There was one mention in the Camp Strake thread. Its massive enough to have its own mega thread, but way to far out to be in "Going Up". Since we don't have a dedicated Woodlands, Spring, and Anything Further Out subforum, I'll be posting this here. Originally conceived in 2015 this one has taken awhile to get going (possibly due to Harvey), but have already started on phase 1 which is mostly low-rise residential and big box stores, which is something we don't touch on this forum. Its the "Urban Living", "Town Center" and "Business Center" that would get our attention. For info on phase 1 developments there is an article in HBJ: https://www.bizjournals.com/houston/blog/breaking-ground/2014/08/camp-strake-property-to-include-750k-square-feet.html Now for the real meat of the project. 18. Oct. 29, 2004, 11:27PM Next incarnation for aging eyesore Condominiums may take place of hotel rooms By NANCY SARNOFF Copyright 2004 Houston Chronicle A longtime downtown Houston eyesore, which was once the high-rise home to a transcendental meditation society, has been sold to an investment group that wants to turn it into condominiums. A partnership led by Don Nicholas of LandCo Properties purchased the 30-story Days Inn building on St. Joseph Parkway between Milam and Travis on the southern end of downtown. "An ugly duckling downtown will become a swan," said Nicholas, whose group is still studying what to do with the building. The property was built in the 1970s as a Holiday Inn and later converted to a Days Inn before it was taken over by a group led by Maharishi Mahesh Yogi, who gained worldwide fame in the 1960s when he became the spiritual adviser for the Beatles. Located on the south side of downtown, the property was never successful as a hotel because it sat too far away from downtown corporations, hotel analysts have said. Nicholas and his partners have experience redeveloping old buildings. The group converted a structure in Colorado Springs to CityWalk Downtown, a residential building. Units were priced from the low $100,000s to more than $300,000. Nicholas said the Days Inn property reminded him of a larger version of the Colorado project. "It doesn't have a beautiful view of the Rockies, but it still has beautiful views of the city side and park side," he said. Tepid sales of downtown condominiums haven't stopped developers that see Houston as an up-and-coming residential market. Last month, Silvestri Investments purchased an old brick warehouse just blocks from Minute Maid Park, where it is building out at least 50 condominiums. And Randall Davis is planning to convert his St. Germain apartments on Main Street into for-sale units. He's selling the apartments for $180,000 on average and offering 100 percent financing. "I think people would like the opportunity to buy a condo in downtown Houston," he said. "Especially if it's priced right." The Maharishi, the founder of transcendental meditation, bought the Days Inn property in the early 1990s for a reported $2 million. It was renamed Heaven on Earth Inn, and the Maharishi's brand of meditation was taught there. But the hotel fell into disrepair and became a dingy blemish on downtown's skyline. It has sat vacant since the late 1990s. Adam Brackman and Jeff Kaplan of Wulfe & Co. brokered the sale.
  19. Hotel boom on the way for the TMC! http://www.bizjournals.com/houston/morning_call/2015/12/hotel-planned-for-texas-medical-center-area.html Houston-based Medical Center Fannin OST Investments LP recently bought 7329 Fannin and 1803 Old Spanish Trail from Houston’s Dixon Financial Services Ltd. Tom Condon Jr. with Colliers’ Woodlands office represented the buyer, andLouis Smith with Houston-based SRC Properties represented the seller. The buyer plans to redevelop the 1.3-acre site into two nationally branded hotels, totaling 325 rooms. A restaurant is planned for the ground floor, and parking will be on the upper levels, according to Colliers. The project is scheduled to break ground in late 2016, and construction is expected to be complete by mid-2018, according to Colliers. HarDam Hotels LLC President James Guillory Jr. of Houston will develop the project.

A ribbon-cutting ceremony is set for 10 a.m. Thursday at the hotel site on Bayland Island. The hotel will serve as Baytown’s only full-service waterfront hotel. It will have 208 guestrooms and over 18,000 square feet of meeting and event space."
  21. I discovered a proposed hotel called The Red Wolf Hotel designed by Kenneth Franzheim. One of Rice's architectural pages has this blurb about the hotel: Red Wolf Hotel. 1948, Kenneth Franzheim, architect. A 20-story hotel planned for a site in uptown Houston near the Texas Medical Center. My question is, do we know where this was supposed to go? Where exactly in Uptown? The tower in the background looks like San Felipe Plaza by SOM. Anyone else agree?
  22. https://www.bizjournals.com/houston/news/2022/08/02/one-sixty-one-friendswood-mixed-use-district-hotel.html Banfield Properties of Friendswood is planning a small mixed-use development featuring a 4-story "boutique" hotel, 4 story apartment building and a restaurant/event space with a parking garage. The site looks to be the land bound by S. Friendswood Drive at W. Shadowbend Ave and Laurel Drive at W. Willowick Ave. Three existing structures on site are being renovated for retail and will be included as part of the overall development Page is the architect.
  23. Is there already a thread for this project? The article says it will be a $1 Billion mixed use project just east of BP and could include hotel, apartments, office and retail. http://www.houstonchronicle.com/business/real-estate/article/Exclusive-Big-real-estate-project-headed-for-5149772.php
  24. "A developer is planning Friendswood's first hotel to serve as the centerpiece of a mixed-use development in the city's downtown. Construction will begin this year on the 30-room boutique hotel, which will be part of One Sixty One, a planned 180,000-square-foot development that will include retail establishments, restaurants, office space and 36 high-end apartments. Completion of the project is expected by the end of 2024." https://www.houstonchronicle.com/neighborhood/bayarea/article/friendswood-hotel-coming-retail-restaurant-18079743.php
