@steve1363 We now have Runoffs for Houston Mayor, Houston City Controller & several City Council seats set for December 9th I think.
Mayor: Doubling-down on Whitmire winning this very easily. I've got to think Garcia, Kaplan, Kahn & Co., will be pressured to endorse Whitmire.
City Controller: I called it! Runoff between Hollins (D) vs Sanchez (R).

I’ll be surprised if Sanchez forces a runoff with Hollins.
Sanchez is well-known across Houston considering he served 3 2-year terms on the Houston City Council representing At-Large 3 & Harris County Treasurer for 12 years from January 1st, 2007 to December 31st, 2018.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Orlando_Sanchez_(politician)
https://orlandosanchez.com/endorsements/
Noticed some former TV news reporters & anchors have backed Sanchez.

Contests to watch for Tonight:
*Houston Mayor: Runoff between Whitmire (D) vs SJL (D).
*Houston City Controller: Runoff between Hollins (D) vs Sanchez (R).
*Houston City Council At-Large 1 (OPEN): Can Kendall Baker avoid a runoff & win outright ?
*Houston City Council At-Large 2 (OPEN): Runoff
*Houston City Council At-Large 3 (OPEN): Can former ABC 13 KTRK-TV Houston meteorologist Casey Curry pull this off & win ?
*Houston City Council At-Large 4: Incumbent City Councilwoman At-Large 4 Letitia Plummer (D) should be able to win reelection without a runoff.
*Houston City Council At-Large 5: Incumbent City Councilwoman At-Large 5 Sallie Alcorn (D) wins reelection easily.
*Houston City Council District A: Incumbent District A City Councilwoman Amy Peck (R) easily wins reelection in a massive landslide.
*Houston City Council District B: Incumbent District B City Councilwoman Tarsha Jackson (D) wins 1st full 4-year term.
*Houston City Council District C: Incumbent District C City Councilwoman Abbie Kamin (D) wins reelection.
*Houston City Council District D: Incumbent District D City Councilwoman Carolyn Evans-Shabazz (D) wins reelection in massive landslide.
*Houston City Council District E (OPEN): Runoff
*Houston City Council District F: Incumbent District F City Councilwoman Tiffany D. Thomas (D) wins reelection.
*Houston City Council District G: Incumbent District G City Councilwoman Mary Nan Huffman (R) wins 1st full 4-year term defeating that Jackass Buzbee.
*Houston City Council District H (OPEN): Runoff maybe if neither get the necessary 50% to win outright.
*Houston City Council District I (OPEN): Maybe a potential runoff.
*Houston City Council District J: Incumbent District J City Councilman Edward Pollard (D) wins reelection. Although I suspect Pollard will be plotting campaigns for higher office in the future.
*Houston City Council District K: Incumbent District K City Councilwoman Martha Castex-Tatum (D) easily wins reelection.
Any disagreements or personal thoughts ?

Isn’t it obvious SJL is trying to make abortion an issue in this election? Both candidates are going after women voters. SJL gets Hilary and Whitmire gets two Hispanic women politicians (Alvarado and Garcia). As usual the Hispanic vote cannot coalesce around a Hispanic candidate…they’ll never learn.
Doubling-down on Whitmire winning the Mayoralty regardless. Folks do NOT want SJL & especially once those audio recordings came out over the weekend.

Well the last few board meetings have provided some good entertainment. The blood feud that has developed between SBISD board member John Perez and Texas House District 133 representative Mano Deeyala has all the high drama of a Shakespearean tragedy. Or at least the beef between Nicki Minaj and Cardi B.
Perez thought because Deyala cheered him on in all his efforts to ban books and expunge humaneness from SBISD that his fellow Latino conservative and he had an unbreakable bond, that he had Mano's ear. When the Texas Leg was still in the process of deciding how it was going to kill public education and all the other board members were incredibly alarmed, Perez kept reassuring them that Deayala was going to come through for them in the end, like Little Orphan Annie assuring the other orphans her mother and father really were going to come for her, just you wait and see!
But once reality settled in Johnny felt betrayed by his bestie Mano. Deayala was the only Texas lawmaker who accepted the SBISD board's invitation to come face the music over the terrible school finance result, and he got hammered, especially by Perez, who accused Deayala of making private promises to him and then crawfishing on him, and Deayala was indignant at the accusations, insisting he never made any such promises and that as a freshman rep he was powerless to sway the vote (which almost sounded like he thought that absolved him of responsibility for voting with the majority).
Two days after that meeting, Perez annouced his intention to challenge Deayala in the next primary. Perez is making this very personal. After Ken Paxton's impeachment trial ended in acquittal, Perez issued a statement praising the result and blaming Deayala for Paxton being impeached in the first place:
"The Texas Senate's unanimous acquittal of Attorney General Ken Paxton on all 16 impeachment charges raises a critical question: how did we end up in an impeachment trial in the first place? The responsibility for this lengthy and baseless ordeal lies squarely with my opponent, Mano Deayala, who has succumbed to political pressure from the left and initiated this months-long witch hunt."
I swear, if Deayala had been against impeaching Paxton, Perez probably would have accused him of failing to hold Paxton accountable for his corruption, Perez is that invested at lashing out at Deayala.
Those of you who paid attention to the Senate's vote on the charges might have raised your eyebrows at Perez's claim the acquittal was "unanimous", since the vote went 16-14 in 9 out of 16 charges, and none of the other 5 charges were unanimous either. You also might have looked twice at Perez's claim that Deayala "initiated" the impeachment effort against Paxton, since it was the Texas House General Investigating Committee who initiated the investigation against him and recommended he be impeached, and Deayala is NOT on this committee. It's hard to know if Perez just doesn't know what "unanimous" and "initiated" means, or he simply tried to get away with making factually false claims, because Perez often awkwardly misuses big words in SBISD board meetings, but he also is frequently guilty of bombast and exaggeration as well.
The same scumbag Paxton, who's pretty much all but declared he's running for the United States Senate in 2026 against 4-term incumbent United States Senator John Cornyn (R-TX).

A couple of Spanish-language entries from KTMD
KTMD: Ganatelo - 2002-2003-ish?
I remember coming across this show during a weekend back around 2002 or 2003. Saturday afternoon when there was almost nothing else on, maybe 4 or 5 PM. It was hosted by the station's longtime personality Marcello Marini (probably better known to most of the area that isn't of a certain age or doesn't speaks Spanish from his family's empanada restaurants) who at that point was in charge of community affairs and he was joined by a female co-host. There was a prize wheel involved and I think viewers could call in and win money after answering a question or two. It also had a fairly catchy theme song from what I recall, but I've never seen anything about this show up online. I was really surprised it was (a) a show and (b) it had viewers!. Maybe that's the point?

KTMD: Carmen's Boutique Infomercial - 2007
Does anyone remember the Carmen's Secreto (at this point they had been renamed to simply "Carmen's Boutique") locations and billboards along the freeways from the late 90s or early 2000s? Then you may remember the lady who appeared in their media - Carmen Barone. She was the host of this amazing infomercial and it was a half-hour of incredible footage. I recall her speaking a mix of Spanglish and slightly broken english to try and "entice" the viewers to visit. She was dressed similarly to what you might remember from the billboards and dropping the word "sexy" a lot. It was super entertaining - not titillating - but really funny (intentionally or not) and I sincerely wish someone had recorded it. Only saw it once late on a Saturday or Sunday night.
Carmen is still around, albeit with more clothing on, as a design consultant with Noel Furniture
Whatever happened to Carmen Barone ?

KTRK: Eyewitness News for Kids - 1992/93?-1997 or 1998
This was an outgrowth of a regular series of documentaries that the station was producing under the umbrella "Channel 13 Presents..." which aired generally on Saturday evenings, IIRC as a replacement for the long-running Eyewitness Houston. Instead of evenings, this aired on Saturday mornings, I think at one point at 6:30 AM, then in later years at 11:30AM or noon. The original hosts were Don Nelson and Lisa Trapani (Shumate), fresh from their stint on Good Morning Houston. When Lisa Trapani left, I think Gina Gaston was the most frequent co-host in the later years. It was what you'd expect - a few kid-friendly news stories from the previous week, along with a look at the HISD lunch menu, which I think was presented by a different kid each week.
The most entertaining bit, though, was near the end of each episode when Marvin Zindler would read a story (classic or not) and it went about as well as you could imagine such a thing going. There were some bloopers of that segment in the old Debra Duncan tribute episode to him from the late 90s that I once posted on YouTube, which I will have to dig up once more. His sign off was also what you'd expect: Maaaarvin Zindler, Eye-witness News.... Fer Kids!
The graphics were pretty fun as well - animated chalk drawings. I distinctly remember a bit with the animated news van driving around town with the old logo which was updated when the new one was put into use in the mid 90s. Neat to see they were consistent with their imaging even then.
I am genuinely surprised nothing of this show has shown up on any of the video sites over the years. Just a matter of time, I'm sure.
Hoping there's some videos of archived episodes.

Speaking of Buzbee, he announced plans on running for Houston City Council District G against incumbent Mary-Nan Huffman (R). His campaign will NOT go anywhere because if he somehow knocked her off, we all know he'll be using that City Council seat as a stepping stone for the Mayoralty in 2027.

@ChannelTwoNews @steve1363 Any of you remember this newscast from Wednesday evening, May 25th, 1983 ? Here's a picture of ABC 13's 1st virtual studio set with the beautiful sunset behind the downtown skyline from the 6:00 PM newscast.
I believe this is from ABC 13's 1st virtual studio set began unveiled sometime during the early part of the Fall of 1982.

The need for additional state funding applies to all districts. Bettencourt and Huffman would be happy to eliminate public schools completely, just like their mentor Dan "Despicable Human Being" Patrick.
I do hope that the lawsuit to force single member districts for SBISD succeeds, and the obnoxious jerks from South of I-10 lose control. They are only interested in keeping Memorial and Stratford as good schools, and could not care less about the schools North of I-10.
Big question is whether the TX Education Agency takes over this school district as well ?
A.) YES
B.) NO
C.) TBD

I thought it would be interesting, fun, and/or maddening to share some examples where articles or reports discuss something in the area - with some element obviously incorrect about the locale, the people there or something that would just cause you to question what you just read as a result.
A fairly simple example from a recent CultureMap post on an a penthouse condo unit up for sale.
https://houston.culturemap.com/news/real-estate/5-9-million-houston-condo-for-sale/
The title: Posh and palatial Post Oak penthouse towers on market with a potentially historic $5.9 million asking price
"A monumental 26th floor penthouse with a mighty price tag in downtown H-Town has commanded the eyes and ears of our city’s highly active real estate market."
then adding...
"The four-bedroom, four-and-a-half bathroom condo spans across 9,503 square feet in the Astoria building at 1409 Post Oak Blvd."
Good old Post Oak, snaking its way through the heart of Downtown Houston...
Definitely following this thread closely.

39 was only doing updates throughout the day, so that probably precluded the need for a set.
It was only around 1989 or so when they ended up getting a photo and set piece to work with. IIRC it was an evening aerial shot toward downtown from W. Dallas or W. Gray. There used to be a clip of one of those updates on YouTube when Josh Burdick's channel was active but so much of that is gone and wasn't backed up. It survived into the early 90s.
The following year (1990), they ended up getting an entire studio built out for their short-lived newscasts at 7 & 11 PM. Somewhat similar to KHOU at the time, there was a photo of the skyline in the background, but it was not center stage as the backdrop.
Basically they took cue from CBS 11 KHOU-TV Houston 🤔

I once lived in a city with a full-time AM gospel station, and an FM that played it on weekends. The AM just sounded better, I presume because that's how the music was engineered.
It's like how one of those flimsy mass-produced pop records from the 1960's sounds better on a crappy old 1960's turntable than it does on current-year high-end gear.
Dean Martin's music (for example) was recorded and mixed with AM radio in mind. FM makes it sound flat. Digital makes it sound sterile.
Now I'm hearing some of the radio stations being bought have dumped Smooth Jazz UGH.

That actually is something I've wondered about a bit over the years. I know it's a scenario that likely wouldn't take place today.
Friz Quadrata still is a good looking font as well, imo
KRIV's design came about after of the sale of MetroMedia's stations to Rupert Murdoch and their transformation into the core of what would be FOX - what then (and now) was the Fox Television Stations Group. The six stations all basically had the same logo and graphics rolled out to them for use at about the same time. KRIV's implementation of it began in the spring of 1986, before the network even launched. There was still some latitude in what they could do (ie: using Billy Ocean's "Loverboy" as the theme for the 7 O'clock & Midday News) but other than that, they effectively looked and sounded the same across that core group. While the graphics changed several times, the logo / font basically stayed in place until 1994 or 1995.
KHTV's logo was a break from the previous one that had been around since at least 1983 or 84 and the station was probably trying to get away from the "39 Gold" branding, even though the "39" had been used independently of said branding through the end of 1987 and into 1988. The updated logo came about in the spring or summer of 1988, and it's then parent company (Gaylord) introduced a unified graphical look and music package around September of that year for all of its' stations - though interestingly enough - each of those stations had completely different logos and they kept it in one form or another until the summer of 1992.
Fox 26 KRIV-TV Houston "Business Update" with Tony Burden from 1986: Not sure if this aired during either Spring, Summer or Fall of 1986.

I was surprised that Evans-Shabazz missed out on winning outright in District D: I think Provost is to blame for that one, who needs to get the hint that NOBODY wants her on the Houston City Council & go away.
I also agree with you on Whitmire easily trouncing SJL in the Mayoral runoff election. Big question is whether Sanchez can pull off a miracle in the City Controller runoff election & according to Jennifer Knesek on Instagram, she does NOT like Hollins at all.
