  1. I work out there several times a week and have found it to be a civilized crowd; most shower before leaving...
  2. I was a member of the Meyerland 24hr but my trainer moved to this club so I have followed him. The building is great but I am concerened about the garage.. It looks as though it could fill up real fast (especially when the retail opens). There do not seem to be many parking options. There is a limited amount of street parking and it is metered. Hopefully when I go at 4:30pm it won't be too busy.
  3. I live in Westbury. I belong to the worn out Meyerland 24hr Sport and am transferring to the Elgin/Louisiana gym.. If you're serious about working out and want state of the art equipment, I'd join. I will be driving way out of the way but it's worth it for new equipment.. The cost is about the same everywhere so you might as well go for the best equipment, and of course, cleanliness, and air condintioning that works. They will keep this gym in good condition for at least a couple years.
  4. Has anyone heard of any opening or "Grand Opening" dates?
  5. and it is still changing... I just drove past the Home Depot and there is a huge sign announcing the new 149' cel tower they want to put on the space between Home Depot and what is left of Westbury Square.. We all struggle with ideas to improve the area and this happens... Couldn't anyone think of anything uglier to put in the neighboorhood?
  6. Amen.. I sure do feel sorry for all of the employees and hope they can find other jobs. A far as shopping, I'd rather be more creative and shop the small local retailers and/or Pennys (keep the money in Texas and not to Terry Lundgren and his vice-henchmen).
  7. Wow, I sure do miss it.. I was born and grew up on the east end of the Island and the G & G was a big part of my childhood years. Every day at 4pm my grandmother would give me 50 cents and send me there to pick up fresh hot French bread. It was always ready at 4 on the dot and rain or shine I rode there on my bike to pick it up. I can still remember the smell of it. On occasion my Mom would take me there for eclairs, cookies, birthday cakes, etc.. Now it's a daycare center but if you look real closely you can see "bakery" behind the new sign. I can see how it couldn't have survived the bad economy of the past few decades but I wish it could have.
  8. I am new to the area, where do residents of Westbury and Meyerland go to see movies now that the AMC is closed?
  9. Looks like gambling won't happen..The bills were defeated as announced in the Galveston Daily News last Sunday: Lawmakers know when to fold on gambling By Mark Collette The Daily News Published June 3, 2007 It wasn't exactly a roll of the dice. When State Sen. Rodney Ellis sat down for a two-hour subcommittee hearing on his gambling bills, he knew no one was taking bets. The bills had no chance. They never even went to the full State Affairs Committee for a hearing. Yet there are signs that, two to four years from now, things could change. Bills that would have given voters a chance to decide on the expansion of gambling in Texas sat dead in the water in the 80th Legislature, despite the Texas license plates that fill parking lots at racetracks and casinos in neighboring states, carrying with them billions of dollars. The bills were dead, despite an about-face from major gaming companies, which have decided that more gambling in Texas is a good thing, even if it initially steals revenue from their casinos in Louisiana, Oklahoma and New Mexico.
  10. Maybe the whole thread should be deleted and let Island residents/governmrnt prioritize the issues as they know best. The entire thread seems to have become more of an aggravation than of any help..People getting all worked up by the comments of a department store clerk in The Woodlands isn't going to solve anything. Every concerned citizen living here is doing the best they can to keep the beaches clean. Nothing said on here is going to change the color of the sand/water or deter the building boom that we are experiencing. Hopefully we can enjoy another season with no hurricanes this year.. If Galveston gets wiped out can you imagine the damage to Houston? Devastating...
  11. I remember going to a reataurant in the early 70's in Montrose somewhere east of Anderson Street Fair called "Ebenezer's". No one else I know remembers it but I remember eating there a lot. It was in the upstairs part of an old house on a corner and had a 40's theme.. The music was usually poor old dead Judy Garland and items on the menu had clever names like "Marilyn Monroe Cheese plate" . Does anyone else remember it?
  12. There was a topless club on W. Alabama called "Galloping Jugs" in the old "Ale House" location.. Not sure of the timeline, maybe before the 80's..I just remember giggling whenever I heard the name..... Ironic it is now a parking lot for a "strip" mall...
  13. Man, you can sure tell when the tourists have been here...most Galveston residents (such as myself) respect our environment and clean up after ourselves. Hell, most of us don't even go to the beach. A lot of the trash washes up from other coastal communities as well (but most of it drives down).
  14. I remember going to a burger place in the late 60's or early 70's where you phoned in your order from the table. It was called "Round the Corner". Your phone rang when your order was ready to be picked up. I think it was on Hillcroft...Food was great. I went to one in Denver a few years ago and I think they are still doing good business..
  15. I used to have to go to St Louis on business trips. Their downtown used to be a lot like Houston .. When the sun went down, the streets emptied. Some older buildings have now become lofts and you can really feel the difference. It feels like a community... No real retail to speak of except the big old Famous Barr (now Macy's) store. The big suprise was this wonderful little grocery store I found in the middle of downtown. It was like a mini "Central Market" called City Grocers. It is strongly supported by the local loft dwellers and downtown hotel guests, but not nearly the amout of people living in downtown Houston.. Here is a link to their site. http://www.city-grocers.com/show/Home I could easily see this surviving in downtown houston. It may not be needed but sure would be nice.
  16. The work has finally begun.. The new HVAC is in (what an expensive ordeal that was!, lol) A pleasant surprise found during wall demolition is the good condition of the "bones".. and NO MOLD.. yay!!.. The new ceiling in the LR is up and evened out (some of the 2 x 8 ceiling joists had warped from having a leaky roof). I have opened up some walls (without odd out of place posts) and what a huge difference.. light and traffic flow is so much better as you can see in the pix.. I am being very careful not to ruin the integrity of the oringinal design, just updating it. The only disappointing surprise is the lack of space in the ceiling for recessed lighting.. with less than 8" and most of that taken by insulation, recessed lighting is next to impossible.. I had some wiring put in the ceiling for furture use (as soon as I can think of something clever). After the ceilings and walls are re-rocked, I'll start the pulling up the carpet and scraping up the HD "marblesque" ceramic tile.. Soon after that, I'll begin restoring the grim bathrooms and kitchen... I appreceiate all the great advice I've received here... Thanks Wall before demo after Some "before" exterior shots..
  17. Mine probably had both...mold because it had a hole in roof for quite a while and vandalism because it was empty and neglected. I think the presence of a homeowner will keep the vandals away..As far as mold, I am going to remove all of the drywall from walls and ceiling , so any mold can be detected and remediated while in the "down to studs" stage... A lot of work but I'm looking forward to another house adventure... My house in Galveston is 120 years old and has the fierce elements of the Gulf tearing at it daily.. Like the Golden Gate bridge, the maintenance is daily.. The house in Westbury seems pretty easy.. ;-)
  18. It is 5735.. west of Landsdowne... (on the old east/west runway)
  19. I looked at the west airport house and thought it was to much for me to take on... the roof being #1.. I am not opposed to enclosing the carport but it would have to be in the original style of the house (like a door that is one big slab, not colonial metal panels)).. also the street seemed a bit busy for my Pugs.... I really appreciate all the info already.. my closing is March 1.. can hardly wait.. I wish I could get in there right now with my crowbar and carpet knife....
  20. I'm a new member to this forum but have been reading it for a couple years. I kept seeing this little house in on Fontenelle (in Westbury South) on HAR and on Houston Mod in the Robert Searcy listings. I found myself feeling sorry for it..lol.. It has nothing inside to save or much that resembles "mid-century modern"..a victim of abandonment and nasty "band-aid" remodeling I just felt the need to save it.........so I bought it... Of course I live in Galveston but will be working on it during the week with weekends back home on the island. I will be sharing my experiences on this forum and will appreciate any input or ideas.. I am not a flipper and I am planning on using the house as much as possible... Hopefully in time I will have the house returned to the original, simple "usonian" style . Again, I am looking forward to any input or ideas.... http://harpictures.marketlinx.com/MediaDisplay/55/hr1685755-10.jpg Thanks, Mike
