  1. I'll tell you what Fajita Flats is good for.... Those long margarita lunches where you just never quite make it back to work. Did that for two years... but it was ok I was with my boss. That place does get crazy. Watch out for womens birthdays... the waiters do some funky stuff. I think I blushed.
  2. ok ok ... you guys forced me and I went to Berryhills and had the tamales for lunch. I agree they were very good. About on par with the fresh homemade one's one of my coworkers used to make around christmas time. The sauce that came with them was delish.
  3. In college most of my friends were vegetarians and they all loved the place. Maybe they dont use lard in there beans? I don't know, other than that elvis chicken thing nothing really rocked my world... I do remember what they all ordered... The Chuy's Veggy Special with Deluxe Verde Sauce.
  4. mmm oh yeah Chuy's... I like the (non-mexican) Elvis Fried Chicken. What can beat a chicken breast battered in crushed lays potato chips, fried, and smothered in queso. We always called it the "Defib Special".
  5. A funny aside. I was a teenager visiting my brother in LA and we went to a nice mexican restaurant. I ordered Chili Con Queso and they brought me a bowl with some Jalapenos and half a block of cheddar.
  6. I don't think Ninfa's serves flan anymore... and that is just a crime.
  7. I fall into the "I once loved the Flower but now I like Teotihuac
  8. Who designed the Holocaust Museum? For that matter who designed the MFAH buildings, Contemporary, and Menil?
  9. I took a look at some of the units going up for auction tomorrow and I was a little underwhelmed. I looked at a loft for $125k, a one bedroom facing north with a detached patio for $205k and a smaller one bedroom facing main for $210k (I thought that was rediculous, you can see main better from the one on the north side of the building.. stupid premiums). What underwhelmed me was the cabinetry, countertops and bathroom fixtures. I wish I'd seen some of the units with upgraded trim.
  10. I was telling a friend that it kind of reminded me of something but I just couldnt put my finger on it... and it just dawned on me on my way in to work. The way that the ground level is actually something like 8 feet above street level and the self contained upper level courtyard and lap pool all remind me of being on a cruise ship.
  11. Saw one of the units tonight and liked it alot. Was one of the 900 sf 1 bedrooms. Going back maybe tomorrow to see another unit. I love the roof terrace but I have to agree about the finishes. This one has some recent improvements (slate from entryway to kitchen and bathrooms, russian hardwoods throughout) but most of the kitchen appliances look ancient. I really like the detail on the outside of the building, the lap pool, and the multilevel maze-like feel of the grounds. I need to see it during the day now. Thanks for the info btw.
  12. Also does anyone have any info about how to contact someone regarding this auction? Email, phone number, anything? Everything I've found through google turned up a dead number or email. <N/M I found it through the Karpas site>
  13. I will definately tell you all what I think. Someone tell me the story behind this striped tower thing:
  14. Thanks for the heads up. I'm going to look at one of the units tomorrow. This one is being fielded by Urban Living. It'll be interesting to see what they say.
  15. Does anyone have any information about this complex? Any ideas on maintenence fees? Ever known anyone that lived there? I'm wondering about security, noise, demographics, that kind of stuff. Are any of the units leased? I've sent off a few emails and I find that I'm rather impatient. (If it doesnt ring a bell its the brick complex sitting in front of St. Thomas Univ., next door to the Black Labrador and across the street from Diedrichs Coffee.) Thanks.
  16. 900-1000 sf for the $150s units. 1-1. They have a 2 bedroom for about 179k I think.
  17. When I first moved to Houston for work my company put me up here for a few weeks. It was a nice unit (as the Oakwood). It had the remote control fireplace and everything. When they first tried to move me into the unit there was a squatter in the flat who had recently been laid off from my company. The place was a mess of Jim Beam bottles. He eventually left (they put me up in a different unit temporarily) but stole the microwave and tv. I also liked that they had maid service and dry cleaning on property.
  18. Feb. 27, 2005, 7:20PM Report: Federated to buy May for $10.4 billion Associated Press LINK CINCINNATI -- Federated Department Stores Inc., operator of Macy's and Bloomingdale's, has reached a deal to buy rival May Department Stores Inc., owner of Foley's in Houston, for $10.4 billion, according to a published report. The boards of the two companies approved the deal over the weekend, according to the Washington Post, which cited anonymous sources close to the deal. Exact details of the deal could not be determined, but the Post reported that Federated will pay about $35.50 in cash and stock for each May share. The deal would bring together Cincinnati-based Federated with the company known for its Marshall Field's and Lord & Taylor chains, creating a company with 1,000 stores and $30 billion in annual sales. The merger comes as retailers look to consolidate in order to reduce advertising and other costs while gaining bargaining power with suppliers. Just last November, Kmart Holding Corp. agreed to buy Sears, Roebuck & Co. for $11.5 billion. Federated and St. Louis-based May have discussed a possible merger on and off for a couple of years, but speculation heated up when May Chief Executive and Chairman Gene Kahn abruptly left in January. That cleared the way for Federated Chairman and CEO Terry Lundgren to head the combined entity. May stock has been rising in recent weeks in anticipation of a deal, including a 4 percent jump, or $1.50 a share, to close at $35.35 in trading Friday on the New York Stock Exchange. The stock has ranged in price from $23.04 to $36.48. Federated shares closed at $56.79 on Friday, near the upper end of its 52-week range of $42.80 to $59.91.
  19. LINK Yet another toll road through a residential area proposed Boy, that Houston-Galveston Area Council 2025 Regional Transportation Plan sure is a gift that keeps on giving, isn't it? I've got a note from Andrea Warren, the Public Relations Committee Chair for the Oak Forest Homeowner's Association, informing me that the latest proposal is a toll road from Tomball to 610 at TC Jester, cutting through the Oak Forest neighborhood along the BNSF rail line. From Andrea's email: The issue at hand is the idea of a 4 lane toll road where the BNSF rail line is now. That is the rail line that actually goes though Oak Forest, crosses 43rd at Mangum and borders the southern edge of Oak Forest. This is a highly residential area as you know. This proposed toll way would run all the way to Tomball bringing commuter though the heart of Oak Forest. At the Citizens' Transportation Coalition (CTC) meeting last Thursday the toll roads were the featured topic. The CTC has put together a draft document that outlines that we as Houston resident's should approve all toll roads proposed to enter the City of Houston city limits. In order for this to happen, we will need the state legislature to pass a bill. In order for that to happen, we need to press or state reps and state senators about getting this legislation. It seems that the city itself was caught somewhat unaware about this bit of the HGAC 2025 document in that the Harris County Toll Road Authority (HCTRA) does not need the approval of the city to build a toll road through it. I encourage you to attend their meetings, see their website [for details]. In addition to this, HCTRA will be announcing in the coming months that it will have the financing for the new toll roads. We need to act quickly and decisively. The CTC and neighborhood groups will be convening on city hall in the next few weeks to ask the council to approve this proposal allowing for city residents to vote on the measure. The hope is that with the city government accepting it, it will significantly legitimize it. Apart from the passage of a bill from the state, or an amendment to vote on, pressure will need to be applied from us, the taxpayers and residents to the Harris County Commissioner's Court, specifically Judge Eckels and Precinct One Commissioner Jerry Eversole. We are in the process of scheduling a "town hall" format meeting with the HGAC, Harris County, the City of Houston, the Harris County Toll Road Authority and neighborhood groups for the northwest region at either Waltrip or Scarborough HS. We hope we will get some questions answered, as well as voice our opposition to these new road proposals, the toll road in particular. This meeting will unfortunately convene before the next scheduled newsletter, so we will be sending a special mailing to everyone in Oak Forest outlining what is happening, how to get involved, and where and when this meeting is going to be, so be looking for it and tell your neighbors. The OFHA is currently in the process of making a section of the website where you can get all the info you need. The particulars of the bill the CTC wants to pass, which they've asked State Rep. Martha Wong and State Sen. Kyle Janek to sponsor, are on the main page of their website. If we've learned anything in the past couple of months, it's that the next toll road may be coming through your own neighborhood, so stay on top of this and support the CTC's proposal to give localities a say in that development. I'll pass on info of the town hall meeting when I get it. Posted by Charles Kuffner on February 25, 2005 to Planes, Trains, and Automobiles
  20. I was going to eat at Fire+Ice once but they only accepted valet parking in their lot.. you had to park across the street and walk across if you didnt want valet. That is just lame.. I left.
  21. I guess that was to make sure that Morrison moved on from Root park with his homeless to clear the way for people walking to the Toyota Center. What a weird situation.
  22. McVaugh is a fairly reputable custom builder. I had never heard of this project before it was posted here.
