Looking to lasso Chicago business

December 16, 2004

BY LEWIS LAZARE SUN-TIMES COLUMNIST

They're not shy in Texas. Certainly not when it comes to touting the state's virtues as a center for business. The state is bringing its new economic development advertising campaign to Chicago and several other key markets where Texas government officials think they can get results, including Atlanta, Orlando, New York and Los Angeles.

Developed by SWG&M Advertising in Austin, the ad campaign plays off Texas' first-place finish in the most recent Site Selection magazine ranking of states with the "best business climate." Site Selection magazine -- considered a must-read for businesses looking to expand or relocate -- ranked Illinois No. 3, down from No. 2.

The new outdoor and direct mail campaign suggests more businesses are looking at Texas now because of its favorable "weather." The marketing effort dovetails with other efforts by Texas Gov. Rick Perry to lure more companies and new jobs to the state. The chief weapon in his arsenal, according to the governor's spokeswoman Kathy Walt, is a $295 million Texas Enterprise Fund that provides cash incentives to companies that move to the state.

So far, Perry has allocated $181 million from the fund, which is expected to create more than 14,000 new jobs, as well as $6 billion in capital investment in the Texas economy.
