TxDOT meeting to discuss work on Elysian Viaduct

The Texas Department of Transportation is holding a public meeting this week to discuss the proposed reconstruction of the Elysian Viaduct, which connects downtown with the Near Northside.

The viaduct is a four-lane bridge from Commerce on the north side of downtown to Quitman in the neighborhood across Interstate 10. The 50-year-old structure is in need of replacement, according to TxDOT, which is planning a new bridge with the city of Houston, the owner of most of the current viaduct.

Although the project proposes replacing the four-lane bridge with another four-lane structure, the idea is controversial because some groups want a ground-level boulevard built instead. Others worry that some homes would need to be taken for a wider bridge, which would include shoulders and ramps to the proposed Hardy Toll Road downtown extension.

This meeting will take place from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Sherman Elementary School, 1909 McKee.
