Opus West launches retail development

Houston Business Journal - 1:10 PM CDT Mondayby Jennifer DawsonStaff Writer

Opus West Corp. has begun construction on a 56-acre mixed-use development in southwest Houston called The Crossing at Fort Bend Parkway.

Located at the northwest corner of Beltway 8 and Fort Bend Parkway, the 242,000-square-foot power center will be anchored by a 100,000-square-foot Home Depot. The project will have a total of 80,000 square feet of in-line retail space and 13 pad sites.

In addition to stores and restaurants, Phoenix-based Opus West has entered into a joint venture with Trammell Crow Residential to build an apartment complex on 12 acres at the site.

Atlanta-based Trammell Crow will build roughly 300 multifamily units that are designed for families that live in the area. The project will be more of a traditional apartment complex rather than one of the popular upscale apartment projects that are currently being developed.

I grew up in this area and we've been neglected for years when it comes to development despite having buying power and tons of people out there...since Kroger left Briargate in the 80s we haven't had a grocery store to call our own....HEB has yet to materialize at 288 and Fuqua as promised in 2002...

My only beef is why do they have to include an apartment complex in this venture? Outside of greed, what sense does this make...outside of the complex on Fondren and the Beltway that opened a few years back, this area hasn't had to experience high density living and that made it unique....

now everyone HAS to have an apartment complex....you see how neglect has destroyed Fondern and Antoine..
