new home help

Recommended Posts

Hello,

I've finally found a property in the Pearland area and it's close to where I work in Houston, TX so things are good there. However I am a first time home buyer and would like to know what are the specific Pearland/Houston area bills I would have to pay once I own a new home. This is what I have so far from a little bit of internet research, but I am not sure if these are the services I will pay for once I'm a resident of Pearland, TX. Also, I've been trying to find info on property insurance and I thought it was Farmers but they are concentrated in other areas of Texas. Thanks!

Samsoner,

This all depends on your consumption/use of the utilities you mentioned.

Electric: First off go to www.powertochoose.org, there you can compare all the power retailers and prices and select from. I chose Commerce a few months ago and locked in the rate which was the lowest and last time I checked still is just in case somthing blows up somewhere and prices skyrocket. Obviously Summer costs a lot more then Winter when you will use Gas to heat your home. Summer is hot so you use the A/C to cool the home down. Average bill for say a 1,500sqft house averaged over 12 months approx $130 I would guess.

Phone: Do you already have a cell phone? If so why get a home phone? Still want a home phone for a fax machine or some other reason??? Then use a service such as www.lingo.com which will cost you $22/month and you can call pretty much anywhere for no extra.

Gas: You can't shop this one out, again more gas during the cool/cold months and less in the summer. Avg over 12 months approx $25 for the above stated 1,500sqft house.

Water: In Houston proper our water bill is approx $12 a month

Don't forget cable/internet/etc.... Add it up and then round it up and approx $200/month for utilities would be about right. Be sure to over estimate rather then under estimate so you don't get in a financial crunch.

All the best,

Scharpe St Guy
