Reefmonkey
HISD is eliminating stipends for teachers who coach academic teams like speech and debate (~$500-$2,500/year); you know, the kinds of activities that directly enhance the educational mission of schools…. …meanwhile, football and other sports coaches will still get their stipends of as much as $10,000 a year. Reminds me of a line from Mr. Holland’s Opus: “The day they cut the football budget in this state, that will be the end of Western Civilization as we know it!” Friends and family know that I absolutely hate sports, and some of them accuse me of being unreasonable about it. So as much as this story pisses me off, it's somewhat satisfying to be able to point out things like this to them and say THIS is why I hate sports. Houston ISD will reduce, remove some stipends for employees, teachers who sponsor extracurriculars (msn.com)
