Houston Expands Entertainment District

Recommended Posts

In an attempt to bring businesses back to downtown Houston after the COVID-19 pandemic, the Houston City Council voted to ease restrictions on alcohol in the area.

On Wednesday, the council approved the expansion of the downtown entertainment zone - an area catered to development interests that waives the city's distance requirements for selling alcohol near churches, schools, and public hospitals.

Houston City Council voted Wednesday to expand its entertainment zone across downtown in a move councilmember Robert Gallegos said would help create more job opportunities in lieu of pandemic business closures.

The ordinance changes will expand the current zone to all areas within downtown’s elevated freeways and allow more restaurants to serve alcohol per block and eliminate the need for outward-facing signage advertising the sale of alcohol.
