Important factor: security. Good gates or a security guard are a must.

Look for apartments or condos for lease in the 77054 zip code, specifically east of Reliant Park and west of 288. They're relatively affordable, most have both gates and security guards, and the rate of violent crime is low even as compared to much more expensive areas, like Montrose.

For leased condos, use http://www.har.com/. Anything along Holly Hall, Knight, Cambridge, El Paseo, or Almeda would be a good bet. And individual owners should be more amenable to a relatively short-term lease than would be a professionally-managed apartment complex.
