I visited NYC during the brief transit strike they had recently. Here's some photos:

Great block party on 5th Avenue on December 20th, 2005! Because of the transit strike, no buses or subway trains were running. On 5th Avenue and Madison Avenue, only emergency vehicles were allowed to be on the street. Taxis had to have at least four passengers per cab, so did delivery vehicles and private towncars, so that restricted traffic on most surrounding streets as well. The NYPD was also out in force making the streets of NYC at Christmastime a wondrous thing indeed, quiet and safe!
