Some city officials want news racks off the streets

Read all about it -- some of Houston's city council members are upset about paper racks.

What is bothering them isn't so much the newspaper racks as the advertising sheets popping up on city sidewalks.

But the city might have a hard time controlling what critics call sidewalk clutter.

Does anyone know where I can buy a New York Times and The Wall Street Journal on the weekends downtown? On the street I've only found vending boxes for the Chronicle. It's not the same experience when you have to get in your car to go pick up a paper, as opposed to walking down to the corner etc.

For the WSJ, the closest place I know of to Rice Lofts is the Randalls in Midtown.

Starbucks at least has the NY Times during the week, but on the weekend the closest Starbucks that is open is Smith & Gray in Midtown.

I've never been to a Books A Million, but I'd imagine they'd have a paper rack. The one in Houston Pavillions is open now, I believe.

Finally got to talk to someone at Books A Million. They don't carry either paper yet, but are hoping to soon. In the interim, Saturday paper needs have to be met by drive to Midtown. Surprising that there aren't boxes on the street.

I really think there used to be NYT boxes in downtown Houston. Maybe not anymore, I guess. I know I used to read it when I lived downtown, and I wasn't a subscriber.

According to the Times web site there are 25 places that carry it downtown. But as you noted, the Starbucks may or may not be open or stocked on the weekends.

I think your best bet is the hotels (another reason I've come to appreciate hotels in my old age). Maybe you'll get lucky at the drug store.
