AND WILL BE HELD ON FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 10th.The Galveston Police Department announced today that is will conduct an all day relief effort for victims of hurricane Katrina who are already arriving in Galveston in need of food, clothing and shelter.Officer Marcus Pitre is coordinating efforts with the American Red Cross to collect needed items during the event on Friday, September 10th, in the Academy Sports and Outdoor Store parking lot at 4523 Fort Crockett Blvd at Seawall Blvd.The event, which begins at 7:00 a.m. is being tagged Fill-A-Bus. According to Pitre the Island Transit System will provides buses which will be stationed at the site. As donations are brought in the articles will be placed inside a bus. When one bus is filled, another bus will be put in its place.During the Friday event, children will be able to play in a Moonwalk, the will be basketball goals set up, plus, refreshments will be available. Pitre says that there is an urgent need for non-perishable food items, clothing, baby formula and diapers, and bottled water. Most of these supplies will be maintained in Galveston for hurricane victims fleeing to Galveston. Efforts are also underway to find suitable housing and shelter points for the influx of people expected here.Initial reports are that up to 25,000 flood victims may arrive on Galveston Island with the next several days.For further information, to volunteer to help during the Friday event, or to arrange pickup of donated goods, call the Galveston Police Department, Community Services Division, 409-797-3830.The Galveston County Tax Office will have donation boxes available for the Victims of Hurricane Katrina. Posted September 7, 2005 Author Share Posted September 7, 2005 Galveston ISD Katrina Evacuee Count Up to 240 September 7, 2005 Galveston Independent School District has enrolled nearly 240 students, primarily from Louisiana as a result of Hurricane Katrina. Floating Shelter Evacuee Student Information (Residing on Carnival Ships) After Katrina evacuees arrive to take residence on the Carnival cruise ships, GISD plans to set up student registration on the vessel. Staff will also distribute school uniforms and school supplies at that time. Initially, floating shelter students will be placed in schools where space is available. Pending the final count, the district has made tentative plans to set up special school sites to serve these students. Other Evacuee Students Students living with Galveston residents will attend campuses located in their school attendance zone as space permits. Parents/guardians should register their children at these campuses. Parents/guardians living in shelters or temporarily in hotels or motels should register their children at the GISD Administration Office, 3904 Avenue T. Office hours are from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday. Parents/guardians should present a photo ID showing that they are from one of the states affected by Katrina. School Uniforms and School SuppliesThe district will be providing school uniforms for the elementary and middle school students through its Discovery Club Program. Parents/guardians can pick up these items at the Boys and Girls Club, 4420 Avenue P (Bernardo De Galvez) between 9 a.m. to noon and 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. The district is accepting donations of gently used and new uniforms and school supplies at the Administration Building. District-wide Fundraising CampaignThe district launched a district-wide campaign to collect funds to contribute to the American Red Cross - Local Relief Effort. Staff, parents and students are encouraged to participate. Checks can be made out to the American Red Cross noting Local Disaster Relief.
