Houston photo: Franklin St. Bridge Over Buffalo Bayou

Below street level, the archaeology of bridges can get interesting, with remains of older bridges, buildings, wharves and other structures becoming so intimately a part of the bridge structure as to be essentially indistinguishable.

That is certainly the case with the Franklin Street Bridge over Buffalo Bayou. At street level, one can't really separate the Franklin Street, Louisiana Street and Smith Street portions, though the Franklin Street portion seems to get the biggest credit.

Below street level, there are the supports for earlier bridges, along with the foundations of breweries and other buildings, and, of course, the Donnellan Crypt, and, by the way, some of the best, if least viewed, graffiti in Houston.
